- In this episode of Bro Labs, I break my shin by kicking trailer hitches so nobody else has to. This experiment resulted in crippling pain for me but we were able to determine how bad trailer hitch injuries can be and if they would be practical self defense tools.
WARNING: do not try this at home. These challenges are done with medically trained personnel on standby and after serious research is done on the devices used along with the potential injuries which may result.
I've consulted with my medical professional on the proper way to test these devices while minimizing long term harm.

My god man, you truly HAVE to be the strongest man not only alive, but to ever exist. Those hits in the shin were enough to make a grown man cry just with the sound alone. I rarely have a visceral reaction to something I see, but damn those two back to back shin hits made me flinch.

I just recently became a fan after seeing you do a few videos with Scott at Kentucky Ballistics but I've gone through some older videos to see what you have put yourself through. I have to say this was the first one that was actually tough to watch, I guess because most of us know how much it hurts to hit a trailer hitch. Those shin hits sounded horrible. Thanks for the great work you are doing for science.

At 15:36 you can see the spot turn white first. This has to be one of the hardest to watch and listen too. I've hit my shins MANY times. On ladders, trailer hitches, you name it, and this hurt to watch. My shins look like I've done what you're doing here, but never meant to do it lol. You sir have some major nads lol
Mark taking damage is golden. It's good see him take part in the experiments.
I’m a mechanic and take one of these shots every couple months or so. One of the reasons they hurt so bad when most people experience them is because it’s fixed to a 2k pound object, therefor when you hit your shin it doesn’t move whatsoever (which actually sends more a ton energy back into your shin) if you get hit without it being hooked up the blow is lessened because the way the energy is absorbed and distributed upon impact.

I ran into a tractor's trailer hitch at full speed when I was 15, playing tag at night. It didn't move. Somehow my bone didn't shatter, and compressed instead. I had a dent in my shin for months. Thank God 15 year old bones are nearly indestructable.

I actually did this by accident once! I was walking around the back of my dad's truck and straight up forgot there was a hitch on the back, and slammed my shin into it through my jeans. It hurt, but aside from that I didn't think anything of it. Got home and pulled off my jeans to take a look at it, and there was a section of skin about an inch long that was simply missing from my leg. Turns out it was attached to the inside of my jeans. I had to peel it off. It took about 2 months for my body to grow new skin to replace what had been removed, and after almost 20 years there is still a slight indentation in that spot.
All of which is to say it was not a fun experience.
That was the worst story i've ever heard, my shins literally started shaking i swear

I’ve never commented on a video before, but I felt those shin hits through the video. So I just wanted to give you a like and a thumbs up. 👍
I'm enjoying Mark's newer role as part time data collector, it's a great addition to the process. Also, seeing Arty watch on I wondered whether you'd considered testing animal bites. I know personally, having multiple dogs attack you at once can be traumatic and though it wasn't filmed, I'm sure it would have been interesting viewing. I'm not suggesting you do as I did, mainly as having four dogs attack you isn't something I'm guessing is easy to arrange. I'm also not implying that I'm in anyway special in regards to my data collecting skills, though I will say I didn't cry out in pain, it's amazing how shock effects the body.
Speaking of shock, I was surprised by my physical response to the final kick, it was hard to watch. It seems watching others experience pain isn't always easy viewing.
That said, keep up the good work.

From one Scientist to another, that was some very significant data, so much so, that it was almost hard to watch due to the compelling nature of the data collected. In conclusion, I believe the results were thoroughly conclusive and show that high velocity impacts on hitches, break bones and leave stiches. Superb work as always.

This is uncanny. Just the other day I was at the trailer hitch store and had to defend myself from a would-be trailer hitch thief. By the end, his shins looked like Joy Behar after a hard night out on the Eggnog, so it wasn't pretty.
In summary, I concur... A trailer hitch can certainly be used as a self-defense weapon.

An idea, since you're demonstrating things that can be used for self defense, How about a Kubotan/tactical pen video, you never had one of those in a video. Especially a Kubotan impact to a boney area like your shin, which is how you're supposed to use it most effectively.

Congrats on the 2mil subscribers. I have an issue with this video.... The trailer hitch NEEDS to be attached to a truck and you should be blindfolded so you don't see it coming if you want the real experience. So much different if you don't see it coming. Plus you buddy there moves the hitch when you make contact. If it's attached to a truck, there is no give. I'm a country boy and I have walked into more than my fair share of them. Now i have a prosthetic leg so not such a worry. Unless I walk into it with that and crack it then it's a $30,000 mistake if it messes it up. (Which I have done as well.)

When I was in 3rd grade going into 4th I was in the middle of a horse pasture in the back of a trailer. The horses started getting crazy and were rushing towards me my cousin and my brother and we had to get out fast. I climbed out the front where the hitch was and I was going so fast I hit my leg on the hitch. When I got out of the horse pasture my brother told me not to look down and we all know when someone says don’t look down it’s the first thing you do. As I look down I see that the trailer hitch had taken a chunk of skin that went all the way to bone out of my leg. I received 10 stitches and a scar the length and width of a 2x6 lego plate I’m glad to see that someone is taking the time to share the damages of a trailer hitch
