  • An evening focused on the struggle for justice, from the first arrival of enslaved people sold to colonists in 1619 to the mass incarceration of Black and Brown people.
The evening program begins with a keynote address by award-winning New York Times journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, lead writer on the New York Times Magazine 1619 Project issue. An expert panel of criminal justice advocates, journalists, and educators will then discuss the changing narrative on mass incarceration. Following the panel discussion, Hannah-Jones will join in a Q&A with panelists.
    Panelists include:
Norris Henderson, Founder and Executive Director, Voice of the Experienced
Sarah Ross, Assistant Professor, SAIC and Cofounder of the Prison + Neighborhood Arts Project
Brian L. Frank, Photojournalist and Pulitzer Center Grantee
    Jason Boulware, Lecturer, SAIC
Moderator: Kristen Mack, Interim Director of Communications, MacArthur Foundation
SAIC is a Pulitzer Center Campus Consortium partner. The program is made possible by the Art for Justice Fund, which supports work to end mass incarceration by the Pulitzer Center, Illinois Humanities, and Voice of the Experienced.

This is a great piece of historical work. For those that are hating from the cheap seats have not read one paragraph of the 1619. They going by some historians who disagree with a few sentences out of the whole project to disregard it completely. Do yourself a favor and just reading the NYT magazine or listen to the podcast.

Nicole Hannah Jones tells the story of slavery and its terrible impact on a large section of population with such precision and passion, one can not but accept the truth that American Dream is still a work in progress. Her statement that it is the Black people who fought to make the ideals of Declaration of Independence more perfect and universally applicable is poignant and eye opening. What 1619 project does is to wake up America to face the social reality and Nicole deserves our admiration and gratitude.

She is retelling the past from her openly biased perspective. The irony is none of what she complains is the current reality has applied to her. She is the typical privileged liberal creating victims to defend who aren’t there and didn’t ask her to. Rather than see that blacks are worse off now since the advent of liberal policies started by LBJ in the 60s that have dissolved black families and killed black babies she skips back 400 years to find a boogeyman that doesn’t exist.

There is much in American history that is not very well known and that is by design. The narrative of the American Saga is one of Manifest Destiny, the White man’s burden and avarice. This is all something we need to know and we profit by the dissemination of this knowledge and yet we tell ourselves a story of a country that is and was all about virtue, bible thumping and hard work to tame the land and make it flourish.
In the end . We are not all good nor are we all bad. We need to love this country for how far we have come and the momentous possibilities it afford us.
Let us all work for a more perfect union with malice toward none
    and charity for all.

The problem with the negative comments listed in this section is that they're based on feelings not facts! Don't take Hannah Jones word for it...Any serious honest neutral historian will admit the hard truth that this country couldn't have generated the wealth, privilege, and super power status without the back breaking work of plantation labor...Dont let discussions degenerate into willfully ignorant comments rooted in angry feelings

    • @earlofmar7987

The British used to ride thru Ireland and kill 1/3 of the population. The other 1/3, they used as slaves. It was against the law, to educate a Roman Catholic. So, when the English off-loaded them in the 13 Colonies, they used them on their Plantations or they used the woman & children as Breeders. Irish & Scott's both, were taken into slavery for around 1000 years.

@@earlofmar7987 The Irish were never enslaved in the Americas. They were indentured servants. That is quite different. And then they assimilated and became slave patrolers and now cops aka deputized thugs and gang members of America. In other words, the oppressed became the oppressors.

@@sandi1410 i NEVER SAID, "America". The 13 Colonies was in the hands of England for 167 years. Irish, White woman & children were used as Breeder's on the Plantations. If your were a criminal, you never got off the Plantation. Most Irish were kicked off the boat. So many of them they slept on the hillsides. Under English law, you couldn't educate the Irish b/c most were Roman Catholic. Out of desperation, I'm sure they would do anything to eat. So, they became the aggressor's for the Plantation owners. Or just be grifter's like our Potato head president today.

Over a few hundred thousand irish were forced on old slave ships and sent to America, approx 1/3 of them died on the way.
I'm sure British had them a hotel room booked for their arrival, everyone put their arms around them, served them hot coco & welcomed them right in.
I mean they were white so there's no doubt that white privilege red carpet was rolled out for them.
