- American conversations about race are defined by the sobering realities of history and the poignant echoes of memory. Given the complexity of the past and the fractured nature of our present moment, no easy solutions exist for the vexing problem of racial inequality. However, on an issue of such enduring importance, progressives and conservatives must recognize the common ground that we all can share: a firm belief in the value of learning and teaching together.
In commemoration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Hauenstein Center is proud to partner with Grand Valley’s Division of Inclusion and Equity hosted an event on race and the American Dream. Jason Riley, columnist and editorial board member at The Wall Street Journal, joined Nikole Hannah-Jones, award-winning staff writer at The New York Times Magazine, for a dialogue on the progress that has been made since the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the challenges that continue to exist, in the pursuit of a more equitable society.

To answer the question about why high quality teachers refuse to teach in underachieving schools is clear to me. Because I taught US History in South Carolina.
It’s simple, high caliber black and white teachers know that they cannot actually teach anyone. The discipline problems are overwhelming. When I called parents to discuss their children’s academic progress and/or their discipline issues, what you got is zero cooperation from the parents.
Further, it’s the teachers fault, or someone else’s fault. But never their fault, they cannot grasp that if they demanded high performance from their children, good things would immediately begin to happen. It’s not about black or white students. I taught both. It’s parents and values period.
Because of that I changed schools. So did black teachers. No one wants to spend their life teaching children who don’t care about getting an education when, as a teacher, you cannot depend on parents to care enough about their children to demand high achievement.
Zero cooperation from parents is so true. If you are white and teach at a predominantly black school, if the parent actually meets they immediately resort to calling you racist, and in front of their child, the same one who may have ADHD, or behavior or confidence issues, be incredibly bright but struggle with reading etc. This is a huge problem and the oneness is on themselves just like it would be for a white student. If the Parent doesn’t want to help course correct early on they fail their child by choice.
The violence and disrespect that is common in predominantly black schools against teachers is also a big problem. There are plenty of educators that WANT to fix these academic issues. Be a solution but when you actually have active pushback and no parent support but actual blame for their bad kid you lose those bleeding hearts real quick. Real quick.
Another thing, I tell people all the time.. stop telling your children they have it 10x’s harder due to xyz.
When you tell them that they hear, they are not worthy, that there is no hope for their future, no need to even try. On top of poor Parent investment in their child, they don’t have a lot of opportunity. And any opportunity offered, (like meeting with a parent) they don’t recognize it. It’s heartbreaking and multi generational and self imposed.
Where did they get this Black male guest??? Dr. King preached COLOR blindness??? When??? No sir. Color blindness is the belief that I can ONLY see you as worthy of human decency...if I can IGNORE our obvious physical differences. It's a belief that I cannot both acknowledge our physical differences and respect you as a human...with value equal to mine. Color blindness is the Conservative/Right's ploy to make the 14th Amendment toothless.

Notice how Nicole Hannah-Jones redefines integration in a subtle and underhanded way: she says integration when she really means we must discriminate against those at the "top" (various cherry-picked hierarchies) in order to bring up those at the "bottom" using over-arching authoritarian policies. In other words, "integration" will allow more power into the hands of black Americans who can use that to improve their present situation. The problem with this, even if it's true, is that power never tends to be distributed evenly among a group of people according to identity markers like Race or Gender. It tends to focus in the hands of the few. Furthermore, elites in the black leadership have their own incentives and interests that don't align with the average black person. Therefore, this can never be the solution to the problem she is identifying. Real solutions will sound more like focusing on the quality of education for black kids, and addressing large-scale cultural changes that have gripped the black community through things like mass dependence on welfare and rise in single-parent households. Jason Riley has a better understanding of reality.

The lack of two parent household was by white supremacy and slavery. While white households got help from the federal government to keep they’re farms afloat, black women couldn’t get help for their families unless there was no man in the house. Whites broke up the Black family by selling off kids and ripping husbands from wives so Blacks have always ALWAYS coped with broken families.

Important point to remember is what role oppression, discrimination and second class citizenship and consequent poverty played in the delinquent behaviour of some of the Black People. To say that Black People should not blame systemic racism for their backwardness is missing the obvious.
Systematic racism doesn't exist. If you are not successful in this country it is not do to oppression.

2nd best private school in my city charges $10,500 for tuition while poorest public school districts in Baltimore receive $11,500 per student.
Remember that private schools also have a profit built in so its more like $9000-$9500 per student for this private school.
$11,500 per student is more per student than 75% of private schools in America receive.
#1 reason private schools as a whole can provide a much better education for less money is due to management and organization. They can't simply spend spend spend since they know there will be no city or government there to bail them out when run out of $. They also know that if don't provide a great product that students will leave.
Poor public school students don't have this option. No matter how bad they fail these children and parents in inner city communities they know they won't leave. Where they going to go.
School choice will give these parents/students the choice of seeking out a good private school that meets their needs and If that doesn't work out they can try another. Reputation spreads and if these schools don't produce the community will know.
Dramatically increase school vouchers programs and we will eventually see board of education improving their product or they'll have no students or funding left. How many years can you completely fail the children/communities before people wake up.
Imagine a private school using the same excuses to the parents that pay them that public schools do, parents would be laughing right out the door.
Jason believes in people choosing their own schools. I stopped believing in central government since graduate school. She offers dated solutions heavily dependent on governmental enforced inclusion. That never works. Jer own child goes to an all black school but advocates for poor blacks to go to integrated equitable schools.
How can we have an integrated society and an inclusive democracy with segregated schools. If children of different colours don’t grow together in an integrated school setting, they may not grow up as secure and confident individuals
We all did for millenia. America is huge, there are 240 million whites Americans & 40 million black. There are white people in many states that rarely if ever see black people.
So obviously it's impossible to have all schools equally integrated.
If you had any idea how horrible & eveb dangerous some inner city public schools are it would probably be a little easier to understand why do many people go to private schools or move out the cites to attend better public schools.
I went to public and private and the difference was dramatica.

There are on avg 4500 assaults on public school teachers there every year. Shocking.
I had to verify this multiple times because I jist couldn't believe this was possible.
They also have something called "restorative justice." They don't suspend students for serious and hostile behaviors, instead they let one or two bad ass kids ruin it for everyone. 1 bad kid can disrupt and cause havoc on an entire class room. I know cuz I & many others use to join in when others would act up.

The Black male speaker made an interesting point...but formed the wrong conclusion. He seems to have confused correlation with causation. He assumes Black families do better economically BECAUSE of marriage. Instead, we know that marriage is more often an agreement that two people's current financial condition supports union. Meaning, financial security is often a precursor/prerequisite for marriage...not a result of marriage. In fact, MOST marriages that end in divorce...for EVERY race/ethnicity...do so...specifically...due to financial causes.
I can't disagree more. I think finances are a factor, but the theory is to have the children after marriage. Thus creating an environment in which the child has two support systems, discipline and morality, these are factors that lead to success. The nuclear family is important that's why other striving nations promote it. The black community has a horrible culture.
When did equality become equity?

Socialism might work on the playground for little people who don't have the physical capacity for moral rectitude. That doesn't mean it is supposed to be imposed upon any adult population, ever.
Because you and I and the next person will never be equal but we can have the same opportunities to access resources to grow and improve to a level that may make us appear equal (equity). Equity does not mean share the toys... It means that all the kids can play and go to spaces without being blocked or made to jump obstacles.
The playground analogy doesn't even describe equity accurately. Equity is something far worse, inherently unfair, and requires the force of systematic racism in order to achieve "equal outcomes." If you implement equity, you neither get equal outcomes or increased opportunity.

“Intentionally naive” is a brilliant description of Mr. Riley. It was difficult to listen to his hollow words and witness his pretentious demeanor. Ms. Hannah-Jones, however, was so factual and exuded complete sincerity about the long history of inequality in this country. She truly is brilliant, and bravo on her move to Howard University.
Spend more time worrying about what white people doing instead of what black people doing and let me know how that works out for you.

Jones negates the fact that failing schools attended by predominantly black/brown students is not structural, it's cultural and political. Riley's analysis is absolutely correct.
Valencia it’s not cultural. It’s systemic and racist. Schools get funding through property taxes. Predominantly black and brown communities, which are that way due to redlining, collect less taxes due to less property owners and homes being worth less.

Our children need school choice more than anyone but thanks to the teacher's union and politicians, it is an uphill battle. As a former teacher, I can tell you without hesitation that schools located in black and brown communities receive lots of funding, especially, Title I. One of the issues is that some children enter K not knowing their basic colors, shapes, letters, and basic counting. These low-level skills must be taught by parents so that children are prepared to accelerate in K going forward. A white school doesn't make it the right school. If blacks are going to raise hell about anything, be vigilant about using designated funds to send their children to charter schools that work such as The Harlem Children Zone and Kipp rather than supporting failing schools.

School choice is the only answer to this problem. There isn’t enough charter schools, wait lists are extensive, but better public schools are abundant.
If you can’t move to a better school district you should be allowed to enroll.
School Unions don’t have a vested interest to allow this because they get more money by a lot for under performing schools. If no one is enrolled in the actual schools because their parents chose different schools for their children. It’s not a different education in these schools they have the same State Curriculum. Everyone follows the same curriculum. Lack of AP classes in HS? They don’t offer the AP classes to underperforming schools because all lower education is well, underperforming due to actions of the student and PARENTS. If there is little Parental involvement and behavior disruption and no homework done for years, etc, WHY WOULD THEY OFFER AP CLASSES? There may be 2 students eligible. And what a loss for those 2 students who did all they were asked to do.. those 2 should be allowed to go to better schools.
We must have accountability on individuals and the blaming of the system is BS.

Ms Jones occupies a special place in the contemporary American narrative. I am going to be very kind: Jason Riley is dull and uninteresting offering nothing new to the conversation that is so important in America today.
If you're having trouble getting good teachers to STAY in your schools, ask yourself which teachers would stay in a school run by teenage delinquents.
Mrs Hannah-Jones is obviously very passionate and astute, but she not once pointed to the need for black people to exercise personal responsibility. In her view, every ill that black folks face is ultimately bound to some aspect of racism. That type of worldview will only foster a self defeating attitude of victimization, which has never shown to uplift a group of people.
Well black people are being oppressed. Rather than ask the victims of racism how to survive in such a violent and hostile environment, focus on the oppressor and how they can stop terrorising black americans. What are you all doing to stop being racist?
@@AlitheaJ This is mainly what I do: I go through each day treating everyone I meet with as much dignity and compassion as I can muster, aware of my biases and compensating for them where necessary. The more aware I become of them, the looser their hold on me. But I’m not obligated to hop on anybody’s hobby horse.

I don't see how you can bludgeon and shame people into being not racist on a wide enough scale for positive socio economic change to happen for blacks in a reasonable timeframe. Eventually you may get there with identity politics in a few decades, or you may face a backlash from non-black people rejecting that bludgeon and not get there at all.

Nikole Hannah-Jones paints everything with a broad brush and over-generalizes things. Also, I don't believe there are segregated schools in NYC with the possible exception of Staten Island. There are all races throughout the city and I would think the schools reflect that.

I taught American History in South Carolina from 1980 until 2001.
The problem, as I experienced it, for underachieving black and white students had little to do with race. The majority of high achieving students always boiled down to parental responsibility, or rather the lack of it makes the difference.
When students have parents who value education and demand high levels of performance, they do very well. When students have parents who don’t care, their children don’t either.
Underachieving students of all races will only begin to achieve when their parents become responsible adults.

@@LiquidSoul06 while I agree that having small classes, up to date textbooks and computers are important. None of that matters if the students aren’t willing to do the work. Most students will not put forth the needed effort without parents who demand they do the work. Parents are the key to it all.
I agree having teachers who are motivated is also important. However, a teacher’s job isn’t to be an entertainer or the sole source of a students motivation. In fact, the teacher, who spent a lot of time in college to teach, should be able to do just that, teach.
Facing students who don’t care about getting an education, and parents who don’t care if their children receive a quality education isn’t a problem that a teacher should have to deal with.
Endless discipline problems prevent any teacher from teaching. It’s not hard to imagine why teachers become burned out. The profession they chose, and chose knowing that they would be poorly paid to do it, not for the money, but because they wanted to teach and do something worthwhile. Has become a nightmare due to a lack of parental control.
Nothing will work until parents are held accountable for their students education. All the money, programs, and technology is useless unless parents hold the children accountable. The rest is excuse making.

Students wanting to learn is very important, but too often folk will ignore that this isn't the only issue, but folk in wealthier districts will act as if it is. If they thses other thing weren't a factor folk wouldn't do almost any thing in order to get their kids into a "good" school.

Separate will never be equal (Jim Crow, wake up Jason) and never has been. It's good for people to see differences of opinion but I believe that Nikole drove the data and facts much better. After all that has happened in this country over race, its not something you can just vote away. African Americans are less than 14% of the U.S population and because of that, we are always in a struggle for equality. Yes we are making progress but this country is not yet color blind. Nobody mentioned the slogan of "Making America Great Again" was what many white people (not all), were counting on. Many whites didn't care because it spoke only for them, before equal rights. Trump played the race card and it worked and he is doing it again, through restricting voting access bills in many states. I want to believe Jason is right for us to live in a color bind society but for now, Nikole is in the real world and is the one on point. Culture excuses is not enough, we live in a visual world and many blacks who have college degrees are still twice as unemployed than white Americans with and without degrees. Why do you think that is, it's because of on going racial profiling in both blue and red states.
