    Hey Coach, just wanted to thank you for all that you’re doing for us new coaches out here in Flag Football. To show my appreciation I’ll let you have my Agility Centipede Drill. I basically took your Centipede drill but I incorporated an Agility Ladder and a few cones on one side for the RB and then all cones on the other side for the LB. It works perfectly for us coaches to be able to Crush It! You’re welcome! LOL

    Last season, I coached my son's 2nd and 3rd grade team where almost all the kids never played before. Half the teams we played were "new" teams like us where rotations worked fine. However, when we played really good experienced teams I had to ditch the rotations just to avoid getting mercy ruled every time. In those games, I still played the weaker kids about half the game and kept the best players in most of the game (at least until we were out of the game). I mostly had kids specialize in positions as it was easier for them to learn the plays, but had a few play two different positions. We ended up with the best record of the new teams and avoided getting mercy ruled against the experienced teams except one time.

      Thanks for sharing Red. This is a great example of when you have to throw out the rotation rules at an earlier age. Just communicate w the players and parents and focus more on skilled positions than perfect rotations. Love it - way to adjust to the needs of the league and team!

    I have a story about a kid that relates to what you said at 8:52. I had a player who wanted to be the qb so incredibly bad and he got since he had the best arm on the team. On the first practice he kept asking me "Can I be the QB, can I be the RB, can I be the WR, can I be the TE, the OL, the DL, the Center, the LB, safety, corner, punter, returner?"
    He asked me when the defense gets on the field can play defense. He asked me when the offense comes on the field, can he stay on the field and be the qb. He said if it's a running play make him the rb, if it's a passing play where a specific receiver gets the ball, have him as that specific receiver. Any passing play that any player can get the ball, have him at qb. So he basically asked me if he can be the entire team.
    After maybe 3 days of hearing it during practice, I had to tell him that he's not gonna be the entire team, I'm trying to build a team set up, and we need to let others be part of the team too. And guess what..... he almost quits the team but thankfully he stuck around.
    That was my first time coaching sports ever, so idk how to handle it at that point, but went with how I mentioned it. Coach D what would you do if you had a player like that?

    • @CoachD
      @CoachD  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Watch my new video about how to deal with difficult parents. I set this expectation during my meet and greet and go over my rotation strategy at a high level. We will be rotating based on our game plan and if we see someone has an awesome talent at one position we might keep them in or if they are hot we’ll keep them in or struggling we might keep them out. Parents and players, please don’t ask me more than one time to play a certain position - show me what you’ve got out on the field and I’ll decide when you’re best fit based on the game plan.
      In this situation, when I didn’t go into my rotation strategy (high level) or they just ignored it after the first practice, then I give them the leadership conversation. “I know you could be a leader on this team, and part of that is helping the entire team level up and play better as a group. It means executing your position sooo well and then helping others do the day. It’s allowing others to shine and play different positions based on our game plan. So, don’t ask me if you can play X, play the position I give you - trust that I know what I’m doing for the good of the team and for you. Then crush it out there and celebrate others who are doing the same. Can we do that? Together?! I need you as a leader out there…”
      Then I go to the parents/guardian, and I share the conversation and ask for their partnership throughout the week. Discussing leadership and stepping up and being a valuable asset to the team where I put them…etc. They usually buy in.
      By the next week, if not right after that convo, they usually turn around, step up, and become a major asset.
      Hope that help! Thx for stepping up out there. This is part of learning and growing as a coach. You’ll be glad you had this and other challenging experiences along the way. Keep going! 🏈🔥

      I keep one of my best players on in X position (if I only have one solid QB, they are QB) - or I keep one or two players working on both teams. Depends on their skills and endurance. Good question, Chris.

    Great videos. About to coach my sons 3rd and 4th grade team. Never coached before. What have you found to be most effective and fair as far as rotations on 7 to 8 man squads? Seems like it will get super confusing as far as equal playing time and chances at positions. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I really enjoy your videos, super helpful.

    • @CoachD
      @CoachD  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m not a fan of “every kid needs to experience each position” so I would find 2 solid QBs to rotate…then use my recommendations for skill sets to rotate in WRs and RBs. Those that are disengaged or not ready for any position I put in the center position.

    How do you handle having more than 10 players on the team? Last year due to league constraints I ended up with a team of 13 and struggled with getting a good rotation to give everyone a chance to play without disrupting players playing at their best positions.

    • @CoachD
      @CoachD  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would then introduce alternates. Have an A & B squad, but then have either backups for each position or alternate players every series. It’s good to have the same team in for a series (3-4 downs), so they can get into a rhythm. But play players where they are strongest - don’t just rotate players in just because. Be intentional, possibly have 3 centers you are rotating between to make up for the extra players. Hope that helps!

    I’ve got a common problem I can’t find a answer to. The one slow kid. His team will always loose. I mean in practice. I’ve found his position in games but kids love competition and I don’t know how to incorporate him and I don’t want to alienate him. When picking teams he is always last. Any suggestions?

    • @CoachD
      @CoachD  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What else can the kid bring to the team? What about resilience and determination? What about getting in the way and containing the sideline. Find what they CAN bring and bring that out in them. Put them in that position to win and celebrate. Teach them to not give up on a play even when they are exhausted and the team will rally behind them. That’s what you’re looking for! Then unlock that potential. 🏈🔥

    • @CoachD
      @CoachD  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thx for the question. Just use one or two players for both rotations and keep them in. Usually a top 1 or 2 plays makes the most sense.

    Hey man. I started a team of 9/10 year olds. Do you think I should remain in the offensive huddle? Or make the QB wristbands? Thank you brother

    • @kenscribner9159
      @kenscribner9159 ปีที่แล้ว

      We only have one practice before the season starts. So making the QB wristbands would require a great deal of ingenuity in the huddle

    • @CoachD
      @CoachD  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m a big fan of wristbands. I have every player have the wristband, which gives them a bit of confidence just before the snap so they know exactly what they are going to be doing to execute the play.
      If you want to be in the huddle there is no problem with that. I sometimes use my coach’s clipboard and either have the 4 per page print outs or I may even draw out a play if necessary. Just keep it simple and drill basic fundamentals of the play so at least you get the most important parts of the play correct.

    • @kenscribner9159
      @kenscribner9159 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CoachD do you think having 4th graders go out of shotgun is a good idea. Or pistol if anything?

    • @leejace
      @leejace ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kenscribner9159my first year also. I used wrist bands the first game. We won 1st game and then got killed the 2nd game. It exposed us. I realized I needed to huddle with them and explain everything with the play on clip board and the wrist band is secondary.
      Every kid is different. Some are slower and don’t know where to be or what to do even with wrist bands.
      I also put some of the best players on defense and hid some of the weaker players on offense. I rotated out the weaker players but I also made sure to get them the ball on offense so they were not forgotten.
      Having a good defense to get offense back on the field helps out a lot. It gives lots of opportunities for me to make sure even the weaker players are involved.
