@@YouAndMeAcademy thank u great explanation, btw to enable reflections on ground i need to add RS material shadow catcher to the ground plane, let us know if there is shorter way. And 2nd question if I use Dome as bg color without HDR how can i add radial gradient color to it? like center is lighter edges are darker color like vignette. Thanks in advance.
Great video, any idea how to do this with a transparent background? I have a single object on a plane with a shadower catcher but the square always renders out as a black plane whenever I switch the background off in my dome light!
@@Bingleheimer weird isn’t it. I now just Chuck a shadow AOV on every render which is annoying but works I guess. Really don’t know why it’s not possible!
A lot of times the object casting the shadow will cast to the edge of the shadow catcher. If you just scale up the shadow catch/disc then it should not reach the edges. This is because the further moved away from the object the less the show spill happens. Thanks for the support!
Hi, I want to know that how to get the shadow with the alpha channel? Should I render two times? Or is any way can do it in the AOV? BTW your channel helps me a lot! Thanks!
Hey there, all you need to do is click the Affects Alpha Switch and it will cut out everything but the Alpha. I hope this helps, thank you for the support!
great tutorial thank you! i was wondering, taking your scene as an example, how would have the plane catch the shadow of the shoe only, but none of the other objects shadows? i am assuming it has to do with excluding/including the spheres in the object tags, but i can't figure out how to make it work exactly. thank you!
Put a redshift tag on the object you don’t want to have shadows. Then under the Visibility tab uncheck Cast Shadows. Good luck and thanks for the support!
What should I do if I also have a puzzle matte? How can I save the shadow together with the puzzle matte? I actually doesn't show the shadow on the red channel of puzzle matte.
Unfortunately that is not possible, you will need to take your shadow pass and then matte that out with a puzzle matte in AE, Nuke, etc. Hopefully that makes sense.😉
How do I catch reflections too? I know you can do it with the legacy matte shadow catcher material but I can't figure out how to do with the RS tag technique you showed.
I’m having trouble figuring that out. Any chance you’d do a video? I think a lot of people would benefit. Or if you happen to know of a video that teaches it :)
The most frustrating thing is it works only with Sky Dome backgrounds. I would like to be able to put a plane behind my object, then play with lights, but that is not possible.
Uff da. Trying to show a shadow on a transparent background seems to require Visibility override enabled, and on the matte tab enable affect alpha, and setting the alpha to anything less than 1.
This becomes a lot more complicated if you're using a camera tracker. The video seems to be overridden by the tracker and will only display the first frame. C4D 2023 / Redshift 3.5.09.
If you would like for only the shadows to come through in the alpha, you need to check "Affects Alpha" under the Redshift Tag/Shadow. I hope this helps, thank you for your support!
@@YouAndMeAcademy important notice, I'm used c4d "floor" object, unfortunately it can't be a shadow catcher, so all of your instructions are working on 2.6.41
Yeh nope. It makes the square disappear in the preview, but in the render, it's just a big 'ol black square, having done nothing. No shadowing, nothing, just a black square. When I click "Enabled" in Shadow under Matte it does literally nothing. Click it on, off, back on... no difference, nothing. Black square.
Hi Steven, if you can give me some details on what is not working I can try to help you. Or you can send me the project file and I’ll have a look. Thanks for your support! 🤜🤛

Wow that was easier than I expected 👏
Yeah, not too bad!
sometimes I can see edges of the shadow catcher plane. .. is there a way to fade edges? so it blends in smoother with the background?

@@YouAndMeAcademy thanks a lot
Is it possible to export the shoe with the shadow, without the plane?
No. You just need to render it with alpha and then in comp use the alpha to cut it out 😊
Really helpful video, thanks!
Glad it helped 😌
What should I do if I also have a puzzle matte? How can I save the shadow together with the puzzle matte? I actually doesn't show the shadow on the red channel of puzzle matte.
That is not possible, puzzle mattes are for comp and are meant to be a post effect rather than baked into your renders. I hope that makes sense 😊
@@YouAndMeAcademy Oh got it! How could I get the shadow to add to my render though?
Unfortunately that is not possible, you will need to take your shadow pass and then matte that out with a puzzle matte in AE, Nuke, etc. Hopefully that makes sense.😉

It’s not possible to my knowledge. You need to render an AOV for the reflections.
thanks! my plane is rendered as well how to disable it in final render?
Turn the check box that says "Affects Alpha" Thank you for the support!
Hi! Mine is just black. It doesn't show any shadow.. Do you know why?
Send us your file and we will take a look!
Do you have a tutorial on how to render just the shadows in Redshift?
You can render a shadow AOV pass then comp it in.
I’m having trouble figuring that out. Any chance you’d do a video? I think a lot of people would benefit. Or if you happen to know of a video that teaches it :)

Does this only work with REDSHIFT? I am a Houdini user with Mantra. Cheers.
Hi, yes this lesson is for Redshift. Thanks for your support!

this "new improved" solution doesn't render out reflections on the floor, which I need.
Hey Tim, there’s a simple solution for that, render out an AOV pass of your reflections, then add it back in comp.
