I think you hit the nail on the head: this brings Gloomhaven up to par with Frosthaven, and makes it an easy recommendation as the anchor point. Why continue reprinting something when there's now the knowledge to make it a stronger play?
I think its kind of wasted effort no matter how y look at it. Frosthaven will most likely still be a suprior game so why not just do the next haven instead of spending so much development effort into a second edition of Gloomhaven.
Nexthaven is the RPG, and this work was done in service of that project. Plus Isaac had minimal involvement in this project, there are other concurrent projects in development.
I played through the GH campaign twice with different groups, and will love to try the GH 2.0 if possible. Although it may be hard to tell currently, I really looking forward for the digital or TTS version of GH2.0 since it’s hard for me to have physical play for now. (Also looking forward to digital/ or completion of TTS frosthaven)
Considering the power of the group we are in, balance changes should be an embraced addition. The original is fun but the difference in strength from mid to top tier was too vast. Can't wait!
To me, this is essentially going to be Gloomhaven 2: Reddit Edition basically with Gripeaway and Themris at the helm. Both of these are absolute superheroes in the community (not that Mike didn't do his part, mind) and I am looking forward to seeing the reboot. It feels like Twilight Imperium 3 to 4 to me, where 3 is an amazing game already... but 4 ist just simply way amazing-er! :)
SPOILER WARNING: So here’s the thing with that. The Envelope X upgrade pack is available for $15. If that’s a reasonable price for 1 set of materials, then $15x18 classes is $270. You can start to see that those numbers don’t really make sense to offer apart from the full game. The classes themselves are what make up most of the materials in the box, so you can think of the game as the upgrade pack at that $15/ea price, and it comes with a bunch of free additional materials to play with.
@@Nerdhaven I’m glad you do! I’m very happy seeing that news. Importantly speaking to your above mention of pricing for the X reward, that price comes down for materials when you produce a much larger quantity of cards and cardboard. I don’t anticipate the Mercenary Pack being more than $60.
The opportunity cost doesn't feel worth it. Would fans have voted for a Gloom 2.0 or would we have wanted a new game? Pirate/Hookhaven. Underground Darkhaven. Swampy to mountain Misthaven. I'd have picked any of those over 2.0.
Update! A Mercenary Upgrade pack will be offered! www.backerkit.com/c/cephalofair/gloomhaven/updates/1357

I doubt they could even make an upgrade pack much cheaper than the full game...
We don’t need a full upgrade pack, that’s infeasible. However, a Hero Upgrade pack seems very plausible

I’m all for more new content but keep in mind that some of the 2E work was necessary for the RPG.
Seems like money that could be better spent on an entirely new game.
Or how about cut out the middleman and give it to BLM directly?
Provide a second new campaign in the box and I'll repurchase.
I think I'll keep my original 'racist' version.
