That's honestly pretty fantastic for his first time ever attempting it with all the problems they had. I've seen seasoned farmers with zero issues do worse. It really showcases how undervalued farmers products are though that they only get that much for it. With everyone trying to turn a profit it makes sense though. If for example they wanted to give a more reasonable lets say 500 a ton. You'd be seeing prices between 10-20 for a loaf of just bog standard bread. Probably best case scenario would be that we just cut out the middle man and buy directly from the farmers. (In this scenario. You have like three or four middlemen. The farmer sells to the miller. Who sells to the wholesaler. Who might then sell to a local supermarket.) Like what Clarkson eventually attempted to do. And then he showcased why it's so difficult for farmers to do that. Or you have to rely on subsidiaries like most farmers do. You can't just not have the farmers produce so the government has to keep them afloat. Even if just barely. Which now becomes the problem that in fact a lot of countries are just completely getting rid of their farmers. Relying on places like China, the US, India, or Brazil that have enough land and infrastructure to keep the farms around. The problem being that China is a terrible trade partner, US farming is also going through a slow death, India has a population crisis, and Brazil is destroying its natural environment to keep up with demand. Germany used to be 80% farms. Now half of those farms if not more have gone out of business. Most of Europe is like this right now. Canadian farming might as well not even exist anymore. The Canadian government despises their farmers. People have completely halted trade with Russia. So with arable land costing £9k per acre, assuming no costs incurred producing the wheat (labour, fuel, fertiliser etc) that means its yielding 2%. Harry's Farm did a video about grain now (04 2022) getting something like 400 pounds per ton or something like that. Jeremy is going to be loving this years harvest.
