    I will tell you what my geese did here. First I had a lot of geese and they had families. A gander would get about five geese and fight to keep them from other ganders who wanted them. They would all travel together in a big mass but, have a respected distance between other families, to the place desired. They kept the fields well tended and used the natural pond for water and bathing. I loved watching them in their habits and actions. Yes, the females would sometimes share nesting areas, or the small shelters that I had for them to use. The gander would stand guard over them and keep everything on an even keel. The gander is a very important factor to a goose's ability to remain on the nest and hatch out a clutch of eggs. I would NEVER try to keep the gander away from the 'nursery' area or lock him out. For two ganders to work together in a single family is odd to me, but, I have seen two brothers that stayed together during the breeding season, they were quite happy in that way, I don't know if both were intimate or not, that would be interesting to observe in a flock. They were both very protective of the family and anything that got to near those little goslings got 'ole hail Columbia' on them!! I did feed them layer pellets when the females were laying and also grower crumbles to the goslings as they were growing, ensuring that they got the proper amount of vitamins and minerals. If you have pigs be sure to put up a small spaced wire around their sty. A pig can clean you out of little chicks, goslings or ducklings in a flash, leaving nothing to incriminate them behind. Those little ones can get through the littlest places ever. I'm sorry about typing so much but, when I got going I just lost myself in the early days of my life talking about things that I love to talk a bout. Good luck and My God Bless you and your farm.

    Good evening Morgan, there I probably should say good morning to do three hours I'm typing this to you!
    First I want to say how amazingly trusting your kids are of you. Even though they had sent you and do normal stretching out of their necks and a little flapping of their wings, that is mild compared to what Geese MIGHT Due to you during Mating or HATCHING time... especially if they're sitting on the eggs and hatching them themselves… What a little Goslings begin to peep out each day or so. They'll take your hands and fingers off if you want to touch or just peek. And the older they get the tougher/meaner they can be. They are EXCELLENT MO those are

      Cont'd...Sorry neuropathy fingers again it was not done.…
      I was seeing those Mommy GEESE are EXCELLENT, WONDERFUL GEESE ARE!!♥️♥️❣️❣️🌈
      I also want to just say what an amazing caretaker you are of your Mommy's- to-be and mommies on the their babies are Mommy's, Once their Babies are Born!!! I just know other farmers and I won't name specifics but they didn't necessarily check on their expectant mothers quite as often as you do and as a result, they lost lambs and chicks and geese because too much time especially in cold weather went by. My father was like you and I'm so glad yeah you're a man of integrity for your animals but also you are so loving and you talk to them and you give them cute names you and Allison... it's like being in a story book with you two😊😊🌈💕❣️❣️😀🤼‍♂️💕🙏🙏Honestly my heart swells with joy every time I open up one of your videos because of the outpouring of happiness and joy and love the emotes from your videos. I just thank you and even if this isn't a new video, I still feel it and thank you again from the bottom of my heart for being farmers of integrity and kindness and love and joy for all of your animals not just TOBY, but ALL of your animals❣️❣️♥️♥️😊😊🥰

    • @andreafalconiero9089
      @andreafalconiero9089 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, this is a good point. Even though they do not possess a language (or not one we can understand), we can recognise common emotions in other animals because many if not all of those emotions evolved long ago -- from a time prior to divergence when we shared a common ancestry with these other animals. Emotions (at least in vertebrates) are the internal motivator that drives external behaviour, so all animals have them, and the more closely-related two species are, the easier it is for them to "read" each other's emotions (in general). Geese and humans are pretty far apart in terms of evolution, but it's still possible. I think it's even possible to read some of the emotional states of _fish,_ so dinosaurs should be no problem! ;-) On the other hand -- creatures like crustaceans (lobsters, etc.) and cephalopods (octopuses, squid, cuttlefish, etc.) clearly possess intelligence of some sort, but they diverged from our own lineage so long ago that they are essentially like an alien species. At the time their lineages diverged from our own, _none_ of those ancestors had more than a rudimentary brainstem (at best), so most of what we consider thoughts and emotions evolved later in time. Therefore, it would be hubris to think we can even _begin_ to understand the emotional states of cephalopods and what they are thinking.

      To desacralize is to remove sacred status. This is why names like savages or terrorists label enemies during wars.

    Thank you for the eggtopsy. I have done hundreds of chicken eggs, close to 100 duck eggs but just got geese. We are looking forward to our first goose eggs next spring and will be incubating quite a few if all goes well.

    Great video, those geese are so protective especially Justin. I am sorry about sounding off in your other video, I do have a problem sometimes with what's constructive, and what's critical. You're doing a great job I just love your videos. They are always family-friendly and real to life.
    Thanks,

    TY Morgan! Yep! It would seem these geese have made a tight-knit flock. Good on you to let them do their thing! It's tempting to take a peek, but best to leave them be. Check on them, but as long as they're defending the nest, the moms sitting on them, best to let them do their thing. Kinda like when a human has a baby.
    A beautiful thing! You'll have to update us on how the little ones are doing!

    Great video! I raised Toulouse geese and they were not as aggressive as the Pilgrims. Mine would sit on about 8 eggs, but they don't see well and can step on their babies. So I gave up with that and hatched them in a Sears redwood 400 egg- deep tray incubator. 98% hatch rate. Then I gave the babies back to the parents and they took over nicely. I would love to have geese again, but my husband doesn't care for them. They are so smart and wonderful parents. If the female dies, the male will raise the offspring and my dozens of parents would round up and baby sit the flock....

  • @susannewinslow5717
    @susannewinslow5717 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome!! They can lay on an average of 20 to 30 eggs in one nest. Some people like to make sure there’s only 15 to 20 in there because they don’t want any of them to get stepped on. When I had geese, the mothers relaxed whenever I started handing them grass and nesting material while they were sitting on their nests. Never got bit and they let me check on their eggs.

    Just back from visiting ‚my‘ geese at the local pond...their young ones are already a pretty decent size - but, of course, it’s much warmer, much earlier here. They seem to be very attentive, dedicated parents. Glad, you’re giving yours a chance to brood and raise little goslings, as well!

    Lovely! I know what you mean about the dense shells - my muscovy eggs are also very difficult to candle. But I do have veining in all 3 that are under my bantam chicken! Boy is she ever going to get a surprise! Meanwhile, another muscovy is cooking eggs. I hope they all hatch because we lost one duck to the fox the other day. Just one, no other damage. I have a refined vixen here! She also sneaked away a bucket that I had left in the garden ready to bring inside for a wash!

    So infuriating but amusing to watch you and your angst... 😅😅😅. I'm sitting here saying: "Leave them alone, for heaven's sake Morgan, leave them alone!" 😂😂😂
    You have nothing to worry about with geese as parents... the whole gaggle will take incredible care of the young... as you saw. So relax in future, don't meddle, don't split them, they are far better at the job than you or any incubator can ever hope to be. 🤭
    Not sure if you've heard that wise goosely saying yet: "It take a gaggle to raise a gosling".
    Good luck my friend! 👍
