We made a similar winch mounted in the tow bar of our side by side. We don’t use it much now as we have a tractor with a loader that can lift 900 kilograms. However before we bought the $44k tractor we used the winch and gantry a lot, especially lifting heavy log rounds into the tray of our vehicle.

Great idea for those side by sides for getting fallen trees off the trails maybe moving rocks also. Had a larger version on the front of a 5/4 military truck back in the 60's to move stuff around. To make a longer version get two sizes of square tubing one that fits inside the other so you just pull a pin and extend it

Pretty cool item there. Definitely agree with making it modular to attach via 2” receiver. Then it could also be put on the back which would be more ideal if skidding logs with it.
I built something similar like this, only shorter, on my honda rancher 420 2013. When I put a two piece ply wood with hinges, it serves as a bucket . This add on is the most used tool on my homestead, even more than my 50 hp diesel tractor. I carry firewood, rocks, branches, garbage pail, tools, etc. What limits this tool is just the vehicule wieght, I just can't live without it, Thank you for showing your awesome invention.

Thanks for the feedback! The Kubota's roll cage is the frame - it's quite 'stout' so far with everything we've lifted to date including large logs, boulders, wood slabs, machine attachments, etc.
I've see several of these, as a matter of fact, I built a variation of this many years ago, the difference being I made it for the front of a jeep, it was much longer, had screw jacks on the front for stability, and was tall/long enough to set trusses on a one story/10' walls. So, not a new idea, but maybe the first to be patented??? Also, I like the idea the idea of the hitch ball.I do the same thing with a custom bracket/receiver hitch on the front of my truck. Makes it much easier to put a trailer in a tight place. I use it mostly to put trailers in my shop, so I can put them on my lift, I have one on my lift right now! A suggestion, instead of the ball mounted like that, put a 2"receiver on it so you could take it off, or just to change the ball size easily. I use a three ball hitch, since I have all different sizes of trailer hitches. Another good upgrade would be a receiver for an extension. Only down side is, the further out your reach, the less weight you can lift. Even if the "boom" will hold it, you'd have to increase both your weight o the back, and your tire pressure. Tire pressure?weight will be listed on the tire.
Thanks for input! Ball hitch is removable, and receiver could be added instead. Agree about reach of weight - there is a balance factor that has to be managed. Currently have ~200lbs in bed of Kubota.
With the way he had the winch cable routed, he would probably be better served to have an intermediate roller on the boom to avoid binding and cutting its frame. He might also consider making the boom itself somewhat retractable to lower the height/shorten the length. It would be interesting to see some numbers on lift capacity at the varying angles, with the understanding that different machines will have different front load capacity and tipping points, as well as stresses on the machine's ROPS frame. Would definitely be better than buying a 2nd machine for such jobs if it didn't shorten the life of the original machine.
i got an old ferguson that the 3pt is weak. its got enough umph to just pick up the snow blade, so i cant use the tractor for much. i cant afford a tractor with a bucket either...but what i can afford is putting a winch that runs off of 12volt from hobo freight on my pig pole. thats genius! i have been trying to figure out how to get my ibc tote frames filled with firewood up to the front porch this fall.. maybe sell it as a universal kit. figure out a way to adapt to any winch and sell the boom and rigging. also sell a rig kit for those old outdated pig (boom) poles and put them back to use again!
I see a few problems such as crazy stress on the front of the SXS, super high center of gravity while moving with weight on the boom and also load applied to the roll cage in ways it wasn't really designed for. Use the proper tool for the job. Its a tractor job not a sxs job. Just my opinion
Appreciate the feedback. Intent is to reduce the need for a larger tractor. Definitely need to consider these stress factors if it goes to market. Note the roll cage is the frame and has been handling significant weight with no noticeable effects on Kubota after 5 years of use.
I waited until Tuesday to watch and hit the thumbs up 👍🏾. Wooo Hey that thing is pretty cool I can think of a thousand things to use it for. I’d recommend adding a few things to help it out. If you put two deployable legs on the front it will take the utv suspension out of the equation. Also if you add an anchor point and another block to be able to double your cable it would have yanked that mud 90’s ford off the ground without even trying. Just my two cents, but good invention. 🤙🏽

Years ago I was at several job sites delivering concrete to backup granite curbing. The curbing company had a very sinilar device mount to a CJ Jeep. Yhry were uding it yo movr the curbing blocks around. They had a weight grapple to pickup the blocks with.
Let us know how he gets on with the patent on that please.. its a nice idea but getting a lift cert for it and the biggest problem In my opinion is attaching it to the ROPs frame... but another idea to actually tow your side by side behind somthing like a tow frame as well is always a bonus if you need two vehicles in one place by one driver 😉.. I don't want to put any damper on this man who obviously loves to solve problems.. Great work.. stay safe 🏴

Phil's daughter here. We've been using it on our land for 5 years now. No problems so far with the front axle and we've hauled a variety of massive things with it! It does need more testing to figure out exact numbers for sure, but so far we haven't maxed it out or hurt the sxs!
After 5 years of using this hoist, no ill effects to the machine yet...... but we def need to further study the failure points if it does get to market.
I am curious to what would happen if you had a heavy load on the front and you had to break hard? Would you be more prone to the front end of the Kabota going down and flipping?
Thanks for this input. Of course there are risks with this hoist (like any other machine) and we still need to determine the maximum load based on the machine capabilities.
Agree and thanks for this feedback. However, many people cannot afford or store a full size tractor. This hoist offers a solution to those with smaller property, smaller bank accounts but still have the need to lift heavy things without tearing up their lawns.

Being dependent on the side by side severely limits this to just a few hundred pounds, with a folding leg at the front pulley making a tripod, and and crane like stabilizing jacks at the rear hinge points, with the winch mounted on the legs like you have, the direct lifting load is nearly unlimited, but to travel with the load you're still limited by the side by side. Unlike him, I own a tractor with a front end loader, and SSQA and forks, but not a side by side, so I'm not his target demographic.
Phil's daughter here, we do have stabilizing legs as an accessory for exactly that purpose. It does limit the mobility, which is part of the uniqueness of this invention, but yes it could absolutely lift more when the stabilizing legs are attached!
Sure a few could use and love it however below would be a couple hiccups. I don’t know that many would want to put that much stress on a 20-30k side by side. More than likely someone who has a UTV or in need of something like this would have more efficient equipment like a tractor or skid steer. If you truly have to use your UTV for everything seems like a hassle to unmount. This is just my opinion and history is full of people saying something that can’t be done .

The key is how much weights on the back end. Wonderful idea. My trouble is can’t afford a side by side.

One thing I do change that cable to a yankem rope.A cable will stretch and snap easy.But you have a good idea there.Good luck

Thanks - Lifting any animal / game carcass with an extension pole is part of the design. Possibly even use for water rescues on bank of a river.???.
Hitch receiver tube as extension boom might be an upgrade like an engine hoist.

Yes, but for tight spaces, or areas where you wouldn't want a tractor tearing up your yard, it's a great little substitute!

would not want it some one going pull a log with it and them bars on side by side going to break hurting some one
they are pretty tough....picking up the back of that pickup truck was pretty impressive to me
