It's called an isokinetic dynamometer. It moves at a fixed rate and the subject is told to push against it as hard as they possibly can (hence the faces and the grunting), the machine measures the torque you're producing through the entire range of motion. It's standard sports science lab equipment these days. And as you can see when researchers do these training studies they're not in there fucking around, they push the participants pretty hard - harder than most people ever push themselves in the gym.
@@TheMchefI guess it's more secure, he definitely can't move his body anywhere no matter how much he squirms, and also can't use momentum. It's not very practical thing to do in normal training but in studies they'll want to make every rep of every participant as standardized as possible. If you just tell them to hold the handles some people might not hold them hard enough and that will limit how much force they can put into the pad, others might rock their body back and forward and generate more force than what their knee flexors/extensors can actually produce.
