It's a little ballsy to compare the two - most reviewers avoid it.
I came away a bit disappointed from my Montblanc retail experience. The staff were falling over themselves to treat them as precious objects, and while I found the pens pleasant enough in hand, I didn't like the feedback. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't also turned off by Montblanc's antics - precious resin, white gloves et al. Many reviewers I watch had to return their MB's to be tuned out of the box, and owners are often reluctant to remove the stickers or post caps for fear of lowering the resale value. Where's the enjoyment in that?
The Jinhao 159 was one of my first pens, before Jinhao upped their game about two years ago. It required a lot of work on the nib, but wound up being bouncy and smooth. You can also replace the nib with a nice Jowo. I like the solidity - brass, I think, (which hardly seems like a second class material next to plastic) and not having to worry it.
PS. Nice to see a reviewer with big hands - I'm forever misjudging the size of modern pens, even when I know their measurements.

My MB needed some tweeking but I was planning on it going in. MB markets themselves as a high end brand that is recognized around the world & so those types of things are part & parcel with luxury branding/imagery. My 159 is a bit clunky & using it now a few times the nib hard starts and other things. I've heard people ask how does the 159 stack up to the 149 so figured why not give it a quick run down.

When reviewers talk a bout MB149 or any MB and how great, precious and a holy grail it reminds me of something a President once said in that if you tell a big enough lie and tell it often people will believe it. If you have the disposable cash fill your boots but otherwise pick up a quality Japanese fp with a little feedback or any other such as Pilot, Waterman or Pelikan at a fraction of the price. MB owners are just happy to know they have one of the most expensive in the daily user category. I would rather buy a box of lead pencils than any of the Chinese manufactured eye candy! JMHO.

@@richardc6932 I'm not sure how fair that is Richard to be completely honest. I've around 50 pens (mostly fountains), 18 of which are Montblancs.
I began the momentum of Montblanc collecting only after I had taken my trusty Lamy to do my uni exams, experimented with Jinhaos with an open mind (simply didn't like them), and found that alongside MB I love Caran d'Ache and Faber Castells in equal amounts.
I think it is easy to say MB collectors like myself chiefly want MB pens for the status. But we're forgetting something key here: our hobby of fp usage is incredibly niche. Whilst any fp enthusiast will know about MB and their prices, the vast majority of other people do not know what a MB is, will not recognise one, and has no idea of the pricetag. I use my MBs regularly because I love them and they are a beautiful pen to me- nothing more

Thank you for this video, now I have learned the size difference between Jinhao 159 and MB 149. I got a Jinhao 159 at a cost that is jaw dropping, cheaper than my Jinhao 8802, of course my Jinhao 159 is less beautiful, the writing experience is.... buttery smooth... even on cheap paper with dry ink - Pelikan violet... i was like writing on a piece of silk... unbelievable, and it worked out of the box!

You can't in all honesty really compare them. They are not the same pen, however, I agree with
Dave Charvella, for the money you can beat it. Now if you have $800-$1000 to spend, go for
broke and thoroughly enjoy your MB. I paid $4.99-$5.99 for my Jinhao 159s. My oldest 159
is about 9-10 yrs old, and I have had no problems with color loss. The nice thing about the 159
is the ease of nib exchange. If you want a flex nib, you can buy a #6 flex nib and exchange the
      nib in your 159.

I have a 159 with a Bock 1.5 stub nib and two Jinhao X750s, one with the original medium nib which writes well, and the other with a 1.1 Bock stub nib. I prefer the X750s bucause they are snap cap and they don't dry out like the 159s tend to.
Also the Jinhao X750s are lighter in weight and have some lovely colours
I do have an expensive pen.
A Pilot Custom heritage 912 with the falcon gold flex nib. Blows Montblanc away for £175.

They look similar, but that's about it. The 159 has a brass barrel and cap. The 149 is resin or Celluloid. The 159 is considerably heavier, but, it should last for at least a couple hundred generations thanks to the brass construction. The 149 should last at least 3 or 4 generations.
The 159 is a Cartridge Converter pen. The 149 isn't. It is either a piston fill or vacuum fill, I forget which. Montblanc does make a cartridge-converter pen, I don't know the model number. 139? Wouldn't a comparison of that pen to the 159 or the new X159 (resin barrel and cap, uses N°8 nib, rather than the 159's N°6 nib)
Oh, the 159 is under $10. The X159 under $15 on Amazon. The 149 is what? $900 ~ $1,150 or more?
All things considered, I can live without the white star on the cap finial.
I'll never own a Montblanc or other "luxury" pen unless someone gifts it to me, and the chances of that are less than one in however many protons there are in the universe ... cubed ...
If I ever NEED a 14K gold nib, there's one on my 1940's Waterman's Dauntless lever fill. I don't need a Montblanc or other "luxury" pen to "impress" anyone. Truth be told, no one I know would be favorably "impressed" if I spent that much money on a pen. They might try to convince the court I'm incapable of handling my own finances, in fact. My spending that much for a pen on my income would give them a mighty strong case, too.
I might buy the X159 sometime next year, just to try the fine Number 8 nib. See if it writes any better than my fine number 6 and number 5 nibs.

    @wasreallygoodnikka 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The nibs are pre-stamped with the 18k before they plate them in gold. So the nibs will always say 18k, regardless if they have gold plating or not.

When i put Sketch Ink in the 159 i really didn't like it. Too much flow. But then i put Diamine ink in it and it works soooo nice. For the price i paid a few years ago i am not disappointed in this pen. And i really like the weight in my hand.
And you can easily change the nibs if you don't like the one on it. It's not like you can complain about having to change the nib at this price level, most brands convertors cost more than i paid for the 159 and it came with a convertor.
I'm now thinking of getting me an X159.

  • @michelgolabaigne595
    @michelgolabaigne595 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The subtle differences do not justify the price difference, MB 149 is at least 100 times more expensive ...
Yes, it has a gold nib, and that's half the price ... other than that, the MB149 is nothing special.
A light plastic that can easily be scratched.
It also has a simple plastic thread that looks cheap ...
In my opinion, the Jinhao feels more expensive in hand than the MB 149.
MB149 may write better, but I still don't understand the love people show him ...
I don't understand why people are so excited ...
Kudos to MB managers for creating the cult !

My experience with the Jinhao are 450 & 750. I had about 7 of them, changed out nibs to Goulet nibs. Tried making silk purses out of sows ears. They dry out way too quickly, and the rings down by the feed/nib section always got ink under them and no matter how well i wiped them off, later tbey would tranfer ink to my fingers. Ya, they do function as a fountain pen, and they have a great variety of colors and designs. Plus, they are cheap, er, inexpensive. I just put 5 of them in the good will bag, kept 2 of the 750s. Can't speak to the 149, but from where I sit, another Jinhao junk. I'd sooner wast $10.00 on any other pen then Jinhao. My opinion only, as some love them. Still, I try to never miss the chance of calling them crap at every opportunity I can. I'm no FPen snob, but I enjoy better pens, and I'm willing to spend the extra to be able to use them. I buy Ben & Jerrys ice cream in their pint size containers at the price they cost, not the 5 gal. container of vanilla sugary swill that tastes horrible. Same cost, two way different products. Save your dollars, buy a quality fountain pen, enjoy the experience, not just endure it! You want to write with crap, go get a feather cut a point, and start dipping... .
