The controversy behind Turkey's move to reconvert Hagia Sophia into a mosque, explained

  • Turkey’s top administrative court on Friday annulled a 1934 government decree that converted Istanbul’s iconic Hagia Sophia into a museum, paving the way for the iconic building to be turned back into a mosque.
Built during the Byzantine empire, the Hagia Sophia was at the heart of Christendom for some 900 years before being converted to a mosque during the reign of the Ottoman Empire.
Now, Turkey’s current president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is pushing to have it reverted to a place of worship in a move that has triggered outrage around the globe.
To understand the controversy, we need to go back to its origins in the sixth century.

I don't know if Global News was around back in 1967 when Israel invaded East Jerusalem because Jordan along with other Arab countries instigated a war to conquer and destroy Israel. Yes, it was a capture of territory, but if you think that was an injustice, then so was the Ottoman Turkish aggression against the Byzantine Empire.

Probably because the decision to change the building to a mosque was a political one, when I was in Istanbul last year the changes were already being made, the court decision was just a rubber stamp. I can ask the same question of you, why did so many people want the church changed to a mosque when there are plenty of mosques in Istanbul?

I have expressed my reservations about this decision because I feel that it is not in keeping with the times. In any case, it will not help to ease tensions with the Orthodox, especially the Greeks and Russians. For almost 100 years the Hagia Sophia was a museum and therefore neutral and everything was good. The Muslims also had the blue mosque right next to it to pray and many other mosques around the city.

You're just deflecting with "whataboutism." Even if Spain were to hand back all the mosques which were converted to churches back in the Middle Ages, you would just point to some other injustice done against Muslims at some other place and time in history to justify the Hagia Sophia becoming a mosque. This kind of logical fallacy can be used to justify virtually anything! You don't have a good argument if the best you can do is appeal to a Medieval precedent from a less tolerant age to justify Turkey's actions in 2020.

    • @photios4779
      @photios4779 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Lots of people do talk about it as something that happened long ago. There's a massive difference between a Spanish mosque being converted into a church in the year 1236, as the Grand Mosque in Cordoba was, and the Hagia Sophia being converted to a mosque in 2020. Something that happened nearly 800 years ago is rather stale news today. If appealing to a Medieval precedent to justify's Turkey's current actions is the best you can do, then your argument is rather weak. But as long as you're deflecting from the topic at hand with "whataboutism," we could also talk about the Greek Orthodox churches which were converted into masjids (and others into horse stables) in North Cyprus following the Turkish invasion in 1974. That's far more recent than what happened many centuries ago in Spain.

Bad idea. Will be very divisive between Christians and Muslims the effect of which will be felt in a long time. It was built by and for the Christians until the Muslim ottoman defeated constantinople. It was unlawful for Turkey to convert a Christian Church into a mosque. It better remain neutral as a museum, free from politics, a symbol of separation of theocracy and politics.the museum is a symbol of a secular turkey. Otherwise, complacency is like taking back steps comparative to the Current Iran regime.

By Islamic law , we - as True Muslims - we must not convert or seize any Church ⛪️ into a Mosque 🕌 , Prophet Mohammed ( PBUH ) and his successors never ever done that nor made a recommendation regarding that and I believe in the contrary of that; prophet Mohammed was very wishful towards the freedom and liberty of others religions .... yet Allah has mentioned clearly in the Qur’an that ; there’s no compulsion in religion ! :
    Holy Quran 2:256
    ------------------
“ No compulsion is there in religion. Rectitude has become clear from error. So whosoever disbelieves in idols and believes in God, has laid hold of the most firm handle, unbreaking; God is All-hearing, All-knowing.”
So , as Muslims, our constitution are the Qur’an as well, what Prophet Mohammed had said or done ✅
Therefore; Hagia Sophia has to be given back to the Christians , period!
This is absolutely not a complement nor a hypothesis or hypocrisy , this is the truth and the reality !!!

I am glad that there are folks like you. The truth though, as hard as it may be to admit it, is that your founder did his fair share of invading, pillaging, and oppressing Christians. His followers just carried on in the same way after his death. This is really the history. If Muslims truly learned the history and how their religion spread with the sword, no one in their right mind would consider the founder a prophet. BUT, most Muslims are unaware of the atrocities he committed. If the founder of Islam had been peaceful, then Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Syria, Egypt would all be Christian countries even today. I invite you to read the history how the Christians in these countries were forced to convert to Islam.

      Eufrosnia D @
Truly speaking; I can easily smell and see the hatred in between your words! So I am gonna briefly reply to your hatred by the following verse:
      Holy Quran 3:119
      ------------------
Ha, there you are; you love them, and they love you not; you believe in the Book, all of it, and when they meet you they say, 'We believe,' but when they go privily, they bite at you their fingers, enraged. Say: 'Die in your rage; God knows the thoughts in the breasts.'
      * Lastly, in very fewer years ( mainly a couple) you’re going to see The Who truth ! Only Islam will fill up the earth with justice, stability and peace as it has been filled up with injustice, oppression and tyranny ! Soon a Muslim leader from Prophet Mohammed ( not as you described as founder ) linage will do so .....

@@recaitheshrewd Well people from every religion hold faiths and believes. We are no one to question someone's faith or believe. Religions don't have scientific proves but still religious peoples believes in them. So if at any place many religions living together then every religion must respect other religions also. If you have honesty then do little bit of Google search and you'll find now entire EU is against peace loving religion. WHY? Because peace lovers are so stubborn and extremist that they believe and respect only their religion and always try to convert peoples from other religions. Let me give you some proves -
      1. In 1947 Pakistan had almost 22% Hindu population but now it has less than 1% Hindu. Have you ever tried to find the answer or show me a single person from peace loving community who has raised his/her voice for it.
      2. In 1971 Bangladesh has 30% Hindus and now they have only 7%. I believe it sounds good to you and you will never speak about it.
      3. what peace lovers tried to do with Israel in 6 day war we all know that. There are 6 peace loving countries which are constantly trying to finish the existence of Israel but as usual when those peace lovers won't get success at their cruel missions then they start playing victim card game at which they are best.
      4. A lot of peace lovers were saying killing of Samuel Paty was justified but I have never seen anyone from peace loving community who has opposed it.
      5. Why Babri mosque was converted into a temple in India? Because it is already proved that before mosque there was a temple and peace lovers demolished that temple and built mosque on it. Hindutva ideologues claim that 60,000 temples were demolished under Muslim rule. Like I said you cannot question anyone's religious faith. So if Hindus claimed there was a temple in a Hindu majority country then you have to believe it. Hindus are not requesting for land in Saudi to build a temple.
Like the above five points I can give you a lot of points. So what exactly I'm trying to say here? My point is go through history and you'll find every where peace lovers stared the extreme religious activity and when other religions fight back they start playing victim card. So don't hurt anyone's sentiment first and no one will convert a mosque. I believe I have talk about your question and I'm expecting logical and evidence based answer from you for my above five points.

Immediately, he established a waqf (association), gave up the association on his estate, and the name of the waqf was beatified This rocked Turkey a few weeks ago, so a manual review of 27,000 documents was found, among them was an original title deed (Tabu) clearly showing private ownership of the property. Thus, the owners of the property submitted an application to use the property with absolute freedom as it is their private property, and their request was to return the building to a mosque They have also used it since the day it was purchased

I just noticed that the video is heavily... what's the word? Oh yes; biased. There are more layers to this than the video has covered. Firstly; just because Hagia Sophia is being converted into a mosque again does not mean that other religious people can't see it. Literally no one will push you out the door because you'r an orthodox. Second; the reason why the law made in 1934 was banned is because of many things, it is not just a political statement. Number one reason was that there are conspiracies about the signature of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk being fake. Long story short, it's because he officially gained his surname later to this event and his signature contained his surname. Number Two; is because in the Sultans will he stated that he did not wan't Hagia Sophia to be converted to anything other then a mosque. Because it is his official will even if people wanted it to happen out of respect, techinally it had to be done because like I said it is indeed his dying will.
Third; A lot of people in Turkey ALSO don't want it to be converted. Both muslim and non muslim ones. So if it is indeed just a political statement; then I can assure you it wasn't exactly %100 bullet proof. Erdogan or AKP won't won the elections just bc they did this.
Lastly; I want people to actually read Hagia Sophia's history, look at multiple news coverings and THEN form an opinion. The things some people barfed in this comment section make me want to both laugh and cry. Good day!

Sophia, not just a church, was the last defensive fortress of the Byzantines!
Following the conquest of Constantinople, Sultan Muhammad the Conqueror's religious tolerance and unwavering zeal have been hailed by all European historians as exemplary of the conqueror's character and morals during the medieval religious wars.
Was Sophia not just a church? It was the last defensive siege of the Byzantines. That is why at the time of the conquest of Constantinople, the Byzantines gathered in Sophia for their last defense. Sophia was a center of the nation for them, and within the Crusaders. It created a sense of defense and protection, not as a place of worship but as a defensive fortress. That is why Sultan Muhammad the Conqueror called all the Christians who had migrated from Constantinople to one side and returned to Constantinople with happy packages. He renovated and renovated all the churches in New York, set up a new system, exempted them from taxes, gave them the same powers as the governor and included them in his cabinet, and on the other hand demolished Sophia and built a mosque there. If the Sultan was opposed to the churches, how could he announce all the above-mentioned privileges for all the Christian community and churches?
Of course, this was because the Sultan also knew whether Sophia was more of a defensive fortress and a center of Christianity than the Senate, so it had to be demolished, and a contract or price paid to build a mosque there.
The real abuse of Sofia was committed by Kamal Ataturk, who, like a secular dictator, turned a Muslim synagogue into a museum, deviating from the so-called secularist policy (religious tolerance).
The real problem for our liberals is not the restoration of Sophia or the mosque, but the conquest of Constantinople. If they can, they will not only re-establish Sophia as a church, but also replace Istanbul with the descendants of King Constantine. The restoration of the Sofia Mosque is a great and historic achievement of Tayyip Erdogan, and it will be the starting point for breaking many other locks in the future. Not like the Christians of Andalusia who forcibly occupied it and turned it into a mosque. If it is so captivating, return it to the nearest mosque and return the price of Sofia and make Church...if hundred of mosque in spain can become church .....why cant hagia sofia be a mosque???

Alhamdulillah. The Hagia Sophia was built as a Greek Orthodox church. During the Crusade, it was conquered and converted to a Roman Catholic church. It was converted again to a Greek Orthodox church during the Byzantines. In 1453, Sultan Fatih conquered Constantinople. He bought the Hagia Sophia (yes he purchased the Hagia Sophia) and there are documents to prove it, even though he had a right to get it for free since it was a military conquest. After the purchase, he converted it to a mosque. See the difference? Non-muslims simply destroyed mosques after every conquest (some are converted to nightclubs). So, kudos to Erdogan for setting it straight by converting it back to a mosque.

.People forgot that Muhammad Al Fatih before war did dialogue first with Roman Leader to solve problem between them, when Roman choose physical war and Al Fatih become leader there all churchs can stand still, people can pray with their own way, he just turn one building into mosque (Hagia Sofia) plus as place of political meeting.

It has been Mosque from 1453 till the 1920s...Converted to a museum from the 1920s till the 2000s..so stop whining it has been a Mosque for more than 500 years. Do not politicize the situation. They all worshiping the same God as the Christians do. There is an onion layer thick difference between Islam and Christianity. Muslims also accept Mary, Jesus, and all his disciples in Islam. If people worshiping the same God you all do, what is the difference if it is Mosque or Church.
P.S.: It has been built as a Church, so what? I can show you plenty of Mosques in Europe which converted to Churches and nobody is talking about them. Stop whining and research first. Politics and worshiping God are different things. in fact, politics is more devil's side rather than God's.
