- Shonda Rhimes chats with ET's Lauren Zima about what fans can expect in season 2 of 'Bridgerton. The prolific TV producer teases how this new chapter will be different from the Netflix period drama's breakout first season. Shonda also teases upcoming seasons and says the show won't be adhering to the chronological order of Julia Quinn's book series. Plus, she jokes about being 'blushy' when it comes to discussing the show's trademark steamy scenes. Season 2 of 'Bridgerton' premieres March 25 on Netflix.

My theory about Season 3 is that it will be a combination of Benedict's and Colin's story. But primarily a Colin's story. In Sophie and benedict saga there is some time gap between their first and second meeting. So it makes sense that after showing the first encounter the story moves to Colin and Penelope. During the season they can simply show Benedict pinning after that unknown girl.
I think you're probably right. I also think Francesca will be married off to her first husband in season three too.
@@s6r231 Yes that is true, because that is also a love match and happens between Benedicts and Colins book, and since the character of Theo is Show only, I think Eloise will get some time too, she has hinted that in another interview. Can't remember with who tho

My theory is that they do ben's story for s3 and a subplot with Franny meeting john and they postpone collins story to prolong lADY W IN the show and since Collin El and Franny's stories happens around the same time i can see them go out of order

I don’t completely mind that they are not following the books to a t. Of course I like it when they actually follow the books, but if they don’t I just enjoy both as two separate pieces of work. As long as they don’t completely change all the characters I’m fine.
That's the problem with Hollywood. They always seem to want to stray away from the source material and give the adaptation it's own franchise or story. It's like what's the point of an adaptation if your just going to want to give it's own identity and make it completely opposite from the main premise. You may not get everything from the original source but at least try to make it based off of the main source material.
@@sucram1018Alot of the times storys just can't be brought to life to screen exacly as is because it's just a different medium, alot doesn't work. Here it was more of a matter of not being repetitive. Had they pursued the book storyline it would have once again been very similar to season 1. They wanted to avoid telling nearly the same story only with different personalities.
Also it is often years after the book was written and the world becomes more progressive. I for once LOVE the fact that they made Kate South Indian and casted gorous Simone Ashley.
I hate it when they create female rivalry, especially between sisters who love each other so much in the book. 😔
Shonda is so serious and so chilled, I'm amazed at the quality of shows she gives us.
Love season 2 even more than 1 and cannot wait for season 3!
It was good. Slow with some of the dialog, but I definitely was not disappointed.

Loved season 2. The Kate and Anthony chemistry was next level.
I would be surprised if we get Polin next and definitely won’t get Eloise next either, as they will have to set up Marina dying and Sir Philip will need to go into mourning for a year before it’s socially acceptable for him to be courting again.
I think that we WILL get Benedict next, but after that they haven’t decided. I could be totally wrong though.

I honestly hope they start combining seasons. Like this season dragggged having the focus on just Anthony’s love story and Benedict’s story is so boring that his and Colin’s could honestly be done at once since we already know Colin and Pen end up together. I say give them ten episodes instead 8, give them each 5 and keep it moving lol
@@V_4_Versace I agree that this season dragged, but I think that’s more to do with the writers drawing out the courtship with Edwina and barely including anything about Kate and Anthony actually being together than anything else.
I get that the writers don’t want to be repetitive, but the Bridgerton books are pretty much the same story 8 times (all romance novels are to a degree) so I think it’s impossible to completely avoid.
@@val3ri3_13 but then why have Colin go see Marina and introduce Sir Philip as a nice man? There should a narrative purpose to every single scene in a show/movie and Shonda knows that, so I would be very shocked if those scenes with Colin turn into nothing.
Plus with Eloise finding out who whistledown is I think her story with the printer is done.

I love season 2 more than 1 and I can’t wait to see how the other seasons are done. I have listened to the audiobooks from book 2-8 and they are all awesome! Book 5 is my least favourite so if Eloise doesn’t end up with Phillip I will be super happy.
I think they'll have to significantly change Eloise's story cause they've introduced Marina as a character that people sympathise with
Yes, I think so too and I also think suicide is too serious of a topic for Bridgerton especially when it’s just in the story to make place for Eloise
Great adaptation of Julia Quinn's novels, with outstanding and gorgeous actors, fabulous costumes, gripping scenes and breathtaking settings. Season 2 is absolutely amazing! 👏👏👏
I'm thinking more and more that season three is going to be Colin and Pen. Reading between the lines, of course, because all she says is that they're not necessarily going to follow the order. Well it either has to be Benedict or Colin next as the other Bridgerton children aren't ready (Eloise's story would require more mental breakdown on the part of Marina first, Francesca has to marry her first husband before you can get to her season and Gregory and Hyacinth aren't old enough) So if we're not following the order of the books, then it has to be Colin next.
WHY Y'ALL WANT TO CHANGE ELOISE AND BENEDICT STORYLINES? This is disrespectful for the fans of that books. Clearly shonda said that she'll adapt every bridgerton love stories but not in order. Y'all really think that eloise will end up with the paperboy when they introduce PHILLIP so early in the series and give us so many references from her book? I mean... open your eyes lol

In the books Colin’s story is by book then Benedict by book 3. But how I see Colin’s character focus in S2, I feel like Colin would be next instead of Benedict.

I wouldn't really mind it, but I don't know who they could do for season 3 if not Benedict. It can't be Eloise, since Marina is very much alive (plus Eloise is so not ready). It can't be Colin, because he's only like 21 in season 2. Plus, I assume they'd reveal LW in that season and I think they wouldn't want that framing device gone so soon. Francesca isn't even a character yet. If they're changing the order, maybe it's for season 4, or I'm missing something.
Crossing my fingers for Eloise and Theo next season. Watching Eloise fall out of favor with the ton for her romance while Penelope struggles to write about it would be a great storyline.
Fans would be extremely anger since her book is a fan favorite and she ends up with sir Philip crane after his wife who we saw in the first season Marina (Penelope cousin) dies
I liked her book but would not mind her ending up with Theo. I feel like they had chemistry and they were adorable.
@@hsanta5417 Eloise has great chemistry with Sir Phillip. He brings a lot more variety of knowledge to Eloise. Great minds and all that. Don't knock him out yet. Theo is nothing compared to Sir Phillip when he and Eloise start pen palling.

I watched season 2 in only one day and Now I'm waiting on season 3
I believe they draw from the book but do not follow the book exactly. I have not read the books. So I am captivated by the stories. Season 1 pulled me in but season 2 has made me a fan. I might go purchase the 📕…. Maybe.. can’t wait for season 3…..
Shonda is a creative genius
Funny how they waited until the day of release to admit they totally diverted from the books. A/K story is a huge fan favorite and they totally dismantled all the depth of character (nothing about Kates background/trauma) and female comradery (Kate/Edwina/Mary and now also Eloise/Pen) that was established in the books. There was absolutely no drama between any of these women in the books they loved and cared for each other completely. Why must we ruin female relationships in shows just to provide contrived drama? The show was just okay... if I hadn't read the books maybe I'd have liked it more but this was just a total disservice to the source material for no real benefit. We could have had MORE K&A and seeing them grow/develop their relationship if not for all this unnecessary drama. I was heartbroken not rejoicing this story as I wanted to be.

I was heartbroken by the Eloise book so it was a nice development for me personally, but I really sympathize that you weren't satisfied with the show and I understand your frustration. I just agree that we can feel the same, but from different angles.

@@mariadantzler2991 So, let me speak to you for the series, since I have only read two books from the series and in the series Penelope has the traits of a mother at critical moments. And she sometimes acts selfishly and cruelly, seeing Mary and Eloise for herself in this good, but not consulting with the others. What I see in the series is ordinary life, where I sympathize more with Eloise, I have no idea what you liked in the books, but in the series everything is logical.

I love This show WITHOUT the steamy scenes! It’s just a good story and beautiful setting.
Season 2 had perfect amount of steamy scenes because season 1 kind of had too much but season 2 was so fun and romantic and moderately steamy so it was cool
@@sista363 I kind of disagree,to a degree. I liked the sexual awakening Daphne got to have. Obviously Anthony had his long b4 her already. It was nice to see Daphne find romance and pleasure through more than just a few stares,. I honestly felt like the slow tension this season was a little too much sometimes and made things take too long.I suppose, I like looking behind the curtain at fictional relationships rather than just the initial get together. It really gives the characters more depth and not such a two-dimensional feel. But I respect that everyone likes a different pacing. I hope the next season is different in its own way but still has a satisfying level of heat.
@@megauxvasse6797 i agree with what you are saying too. Well now that i think about it season 1 would have been boring without those scenes lol. Both the seasons were perfect and season 2 mostly had such less amount of steamy scenes because both characters took longer to realise and accept their feelings for eachother. Daphne and Simon's friendship turned into a passionate love and it was beautiful how they both matured themselves (well that rapey scene will always be wrong and disturbing for me. I wish shondaland didn't include that scene). I absolutely agree with you👍
@@sista363 I can respect that.I like writers being able to express a character in all of their sides.. & Im right there with you.I don't like that scene myself. I get that she felt betrayed by Simon lying to her & she didn't feel she was doing anything wrong with making him prove he could have a child. But I'm glad it didn't take that time. It would've taken away from the relationship for their child to be conceived that way,to me.
@@megauxvasse6797 i was so much relaxed after knowing that her period came because there was no way Simon would have loved his child if the child was made with betrayal and rape. Simon could have become just like his father. Well everything turned out pretty much great after that but still that scene traumatized a lot of Audience haha
Hello Shonda, Please ask the makeup artists to reduce the makeup on the women of colour on the Bridgerton film. Because their skin look really oily at times. Review the skin makeup of Kerry Washington: her colour shines through naturally with the makeup, so spectacularly. Love everything though, not meaning to be critical.
S2 introduced Sir Phillips so looks like S3 = Sir Phillips & Aloise. Cannot be Penelope & Colin as Lady Whistledown cannot be publicly known until much later?! 😁
I think its going to follow a sister-brother-sister-brother etc... order. So since its was Daphne-Anthony, season 3 is most likely Eloise
I do hope we see more Francesca in the next season though
its gonna be either Benedict or Colin, its too soon for Eloise, they were following the books when they did Daphne-Anthony so its not really a clue for it being sister-brother-sister. Though Francesca should be married by now if they wont do the 10 year time jump
@@Fan_Girl-xd8wy If we see the book's timeline then the only story that would make sense to happen next would be Benedict's, but since Shonda says that they are not going to follow the book's timeline, the show is more likely to follow Eloise's story since her character has been developed a lot through season 2, leaving a lot to explore next season

Colin's story could easily be next as well but for some reason I think Penelope's character has much more developing to do and it seems like Lady Whistledown will be around for a lot more

I think its a toss up between Eloise and Benedict. I don't care what the order of the books are. Netflix is not going to greenlight a show for 8 seasons/8 years. And I don't think Shonda would want to be tied to another show for that long anyway. Expect some of the show to get compressed where multiple romances are happening at the same time. Six seasons tops. They will have a season focused on Benedict and a season for Eloise. In fact, they might combine Pen/Colin and Eloise's romance seasons together in order to bridge the gap between the two ladies. LOL, it could be an Eloise and Colin season next season followed by Benedict. Or its Benedict as a one off followed by Eloise and Colin happening simulatenously. And the reason that Netflix greenlit the next two seasons is that they were sold on it being focused on the three well-liked characters on this show, Penelope, Eloise, and Benedict. Colin is just coming along for the ride.
I also think that the writers may be trying to approach the show like an anthology where there is a different feel each season. This most recent season was an Austen-esque approach to romance. I expect the Benedict season, because of how his character is played, to be more hilarious/rom-com-esque. I mean...that is how I would like it. Let them explore the different approaches to the romance trope through a period piece show that takes a modern approach to things.

I get the fandom over the books but the show has more depth I think. In terms of issues like consent , diversity, women's position during those times , show totally carries more weight.

the books honestly only have good plotlines, I can't say the same for the writing... I think the show has done a good job of incorporating certain elements from the books and not copied them entirely..
i have read the books and i still heaviliy prefer the show .. it's okay to make changes as long as they're for the better !

Can't agree more. It's suppose to be Benedict. I don't mind if they make their own plot or add some drama but I hope they still use timeline in the book so it won't ruin anything
I've not read the books but it does not make sense to deviate from the books storyline to create a more dramatic and toxic drama.
There did not need to be a love triangle, especially between 2 sisters.
These books are historical romances so it should have focused on the main couple.
A hate to love slow burn relationship could provide weeks of material to show two people fighting their feelings for each other, scenes of them spending time together but struggling to be honest about how they feel.
This could have been an epic TV romance.
There was far too much focus on The Featheringtons and other side stories.
I've read the books, and I'm sorry for other readers who are mad about it, but there simply wasn't enough drama in TVWLM. Not for a TV show that costs $7+m per episode to make. You literally go for chapters without anything discernible happening. I regret that they didn't replicate the library scene, because it was beautiful, but I wasn't mad about it. As for the bee scene, I loved the changes, I hated the whole sucking venom out of her chest malarkey, it was dumb af. Also, I loved that they chose each other, rather than having yet another forced marriage.
As for the triangle, Edwina was a way more interesting character on the show, and although I hate triangles as a general rule, it's still more interesting than having Edwina go off and marry some random scholar.
why is everyone sleeping on francesca's book? it start before colin and eloise if they don't do benedict's perhaps it's hers ( it's my favorite with colin's)
Too little information about her. They need to show us more ofnher before they start her story. Maybe in season 3 she will met John and marry him, Benedict will meet Sophie for the first time, but the story will be about Colin or Eloise, I'm sure
Franny marry someone in Ben book then she moved to scotland. Her love story with her husband's cousin after her late husband died was happened in the same time with Colin marry Penelope and Eloise marry Phillip. So it's not earlier or something.
i am sad that next season might not focus on benedict and Sophie. The time jump allows for so much growth in all the characters and Sophie plays such a role in the younger kids' lives.

Typical Shonda. All her shows start strong then get so progressively ridiculous that most viewers lose interest by the 4th season. She needs to get out of her echo chamber and recognize what made the source material so popular.

Tbh I don’t even think the source material is that great, from what I see of reviewers and reactors the weakest parts for both seasons are the storylines that come directly from the books AND the parts that are clearly Shonda’s input. I think the books from the 90s needed a serious 2020’s update, which the show did excellently in terms of casting and topic focuses, but they also need a 2020’s drama update, which Shonda hasn’t been able to produce because she is so stuck in early/mid 2000s/2010s era of drama with catty women and shock and awe storylines. But honestly I think people these days are looking for something a bit more classic, with timeless love stories and captivating characters. Those are the parts that draw viewers to the stories and make them popular and honestly why I feel that Shonda’s early seasons do well when she is still setting up character development which she is fabulous at, I wish she knew how to capitalize more on that part of her writing, which I was hoping would happen with this show since there is seemingly new characters every season
TVWLM was one of the weakesgt books in my personal opinion. Anthony was thoroughly unlikable and I spent most of the book wanting to take a bat to his knees. The show did a stellar job on a character that I disliked, and a book that was just meh to me.

This season didn't work for me. It took till episode 5 for the story to pick up. I only re-watched one scene while in season 1 there were many to re-watch. The two lead characters didn't have depth.

Next season is 100% gonna be Colin and Penelope. They’ve set up their story really well at this point and I feel like viewers are ready to see their love story finally play out. Keeping them apart for yet another season would just frustrate a lot of viewers.
I also think they’ll probably incorporate some elements of book 3 in there, like perhaps Sophie’s backstory or Benedict and Sophie’s first meeting.

I hope it's still gonna be benedict since it's gonna lead us to collin and penelope's story then eloise. Cz if they change the order, it's sooo risky bcs most of audience are here bcs of the book. So if they're being creative by tearing down the whole books' plot, i must say that it's not safe and it will potentially disappoint the book fans. The thing is.. being creative is good, but please consider the essential part of the original story in the book.

Surprisingly, Season 2 was even better than Season 1. Simone and Jonathan knocked it out of the park. OTOH, I'm so excited to see a season with Benedict as the main character. Luke Thompson is so appealing.
I think next season would be about Polin. Because Penelope’s secret has been revealed to Eloise and they already set up Polin relationship. Probably followed by Benedict/Eloise story. Sir Philip cranes children should be around 8 y.o when he gets widowed.

I mean if they hadn't made Eloise find out about Whistledown, they could have kept doing a slow burn on Colin and Penelope. Feel like they'll have to start it now cause it's put the wheels in motion. As long as they don't skip or condense Benedict's story it should be fine because his happy ending in the books plays into Eloise's story quite well and they really shouldn't be cutting any of that story out.
I want Eloise next. That also focuses on her friendship with Penelope
A Colin/Pen season would accomplish this too. I think in order for Eloise to have her season that some more story building needs to happen with Marina, depicting her downward spiral so that her death doesn't come out of the blue.

Yes,Eloise marrying some guy to take care of his kids is the worst part of all Bridgerton books, she is too good a character for this. Well seems to me that we're getting Colin and Pen next and we'll get Benedict in Season 4.....It's all good but Good-guy Benedict needs his story too..... especially since we saw so much less of his wild art friends and his relationship with Madame Delacroix in Season 2. The real question is will we ever see Francesca in more than 2 episodes a season before her own story in (I presume) Season 6.
haven't read the books, but the Eloise spoilers are so disappointing, worse than little women, you know, so the deviations from the book sound uplifting

@@klaragagarina510 if you actually listen to the interview she never said each sibling would get their own SEASON, she said they will each get their story “told” so nothing to stop her from doubling up seasons. I can easily see Benedict’s and Colin’s season getting paired up since so much of Colin’s has already been set up. And since Eloise’s and Francesa’s happen back to back, nothing to to keep them from sharing a season either 🤷♀️

It would make sense for Colin and Penelope to be featured next season. Then Benedict and Sophie and then Eloise and Sr. Philip after that. Eloise just had her first season. She is supposed to have 8 unsuccessful seasons before making a very drastic choice to consider marriage to Sr. Philip. If she ran off in the next season it would not make any sense. Colin and Penelope’s story has already been building. So it makes sense that the next season will be about them. Also, Benedict being married and close by Sr.Philip’s estate is important in the Eloise story, so I think his story comes before hers.
Penelope marry Colin when she's an old maid. Cause Colin not caring much about love foe years. In the book, he marry Penelope when he is 35 and Penelope is 28. So... For me it's imposible.

I think the representation in Bridgeton is great. It’s funny because it doesn’t feel out of place. I personally love history and learning about it and of course we know back then we wouldn’t see some of the people in the higher class. But I don’t watch Brigherton for historical accuracy.
No Hollywood does not depict certain hues in the "higher class". It feeds into those insecurities of people who want to see themselves as superior to others.
The flow in the books is strange to me, so I hope for a more chronological telling. In the book you just follow the main characters and there are time jumps.
Also I understand that there are big fans of the books and that you would feel protective of them and their story. Me, I am happy with the changes. I like the setting and the basic outline, but the books are not for me.

This was season was the fanfictin we've been dreaming about since forever,oh my goodness 😍😍😍😍 I am still in my shock phase JQueen rules ,the team has done an amazing work ,I am on my third round of binging this new season....Kanthony spats and banter are hilarious and omg The Scenes-you know the 'eye-to-eye' and the 'i-wanna-kill-you-kiss-you' moments made me straight up giggle and fan myself from the sheer excitement and just liquid hotness from their chemistry lava ...Whew
Seaon 1 got me hooked, Season 2 had me excited... Now the coming of Season 3 got me Thirsty for more of the Bridgerton series.....

I have no idea where the story arc between colin/Penelope/Eloise is going.
Penelope's been all but banished from associating with the family, Eloise found out who LW really was. Those were vital plotlines in Colin & Penelope getting together.
If they added Theo, then surely perhaps a love interest could be introduced for Penelope, kicking Colin into gear through jealousy & the possibility of losing his friend.
Focusing on Ben & Sophie, the final scene 'could' be Penelope asking Colin to kiss her, which he does and leads into S4.
Surely Penelope's absence from the family is going to be noticed, especially by Lady Violet. Which is where I feel its getting messy. Sorry if my opinion/ideas are awful but I'm a huge #polin fan and love Romancing Mr Bridgerton ❤️ ♥️ 💖
I personally think both seasons are good in there own way b/c they both served different audience types. & while season 1 is a bit more of my favorite than season 2( just a personal preference,I felt the tension was a bit much for the payoff. & I wanna know more about Edwina than Kate,tbh.),The season was still fun enough to keep my interest. & I hope the next season is different and sexy in its own way.

I think 3rd season won't be Kolins because we all know Penelope will stop writing as lady Whistledown when she gets married. It's too soon for that. To be honest it feels too soon to anybodies story. In the end of season 1 Anthony said that he is going to get married, and we were sure that next storyline will be his. But now we didn't get direct hint of who will be next. Hope we get this information as soon as possible, because I cannot stop thinking about it
Why not set it up so Pen passes on the mantle to someone else, or why couldn’t she keep writing after she’s married?

I will refrain from giving huge spoilers but they've already introduced Eloise's book love interest and it is not Theo... I am certain that there will be a number of hugely disappointed book series fans if that story is changed all the way down to the final love interests.

I love the book series but I think Benedict's story will be next even if they don't follow the flow of the books. But I think they're going to add more lgbtq characters and maybe we'll even get to watch gay couple.

This just proves to me that I could be er be an interviewer, I would have immediately told Shonda that they ruined so much about the second book. Plus I'm tired of people saying it's and adaptation like that should make it okay for them going completely off script with the source material. If people are going to do adaptations then they need to respect what their borrowing. It's not like they can up with the characters, the setting, THE STORY!! They're merely borrowing it.
There was a lack of chemistry between KAnthony... Kate was wooden and too cold.. there were not enough scenes between the two to create that chemistry... Season 2 is all about Edwina and Anthony smdh... disappointed!!... Hope season 3 focuses on intimacy between the main love couple and less subplots...

Aww, c’monnn, I really enjoyed season 2 and so did so many other people. 🤔 I will say that some of the scenes, the dialogue was a little too slow and bit redundant IMO; but overall I was pleased with it. It’s called a season 2 for a reason. 🤷♀️
Thank you for saying this I’m bursting with anger with what they have done there is a reason this became a phenomenon and that’s because an actual historical romance for the first time was adapted troupes and all!
I think they forgot what made this show popular in the first place but only the actors were able to save the script and cant say the same for the writers. I waited for season 2 for so long with the expectations that s1 gave us and how every book reader said this season was gonna be 2x better.
Interesting, I don’t like the books all that much so I actually like most of the nonbook updates they made but I still didn’t think the season was all that great because they didn’t give the characters more depth outside of their book characteristics and I wish they had done even more with the characters offbook. Like I would have loved to see colonial India, and the new characters in saris and bindis, and the struggles of maintaining cultural Indian heritage in this time period. Those are also the parts of season one that I liked, obviously none of which was in the books so I wish they’d done more of that here this season as well
I haven't read the books and I'm still not impressed with this season. I felt no chemistry between Anthony and Kate. Maybe Daphne and the Duke were just too much to live up to.

As long as they try to follow the story of the written word in the book, I'll continue to watch. I'm not bothered about the differences in ethnicity because (let the progressives and woke have their moment) the actors are fabulous and bring the character to life in such a way you never expected. Kudos to all of the actors. I'd love to see the show integrate all the books into each sibling's books. I'm not a fan of how they're taking Lady Whistledown/Penelope because it was a complete secret until Collin's book, but nonetheless, great Season Two. I'm still hooked.
