    Everybody line up behind me for the Cory Wong Signature Stratocaster with no bridge pickup and a 3-way pickup selector mounted where the now unused second tone pot goes so you won't unwittingly smack the pickup selector when you get that funky cartilage hand flappin'.

    • @diegosakk2934
      @diegosakk2934 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Matt DeViney But with a 3 way switch there will be no fourth position

    • @EuanH91
      @EuanH91 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I think he means a 3 way switch that selects only what would normally be 3rd, 4th and 5th position. Middle pickup, in-between and Neck pickup. No need for the bridge, or 1st and 2nd positions.

    • @wonnie
      @wonnie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Motoko Kida's (from Tricot) custom Altero Stratocaster already beat it to the punch. Her Strat only has a middle and neck pick up, but only one knob. It's a beautiful guitar too. It would be sick if we got a signature Cory Wong guitar from Fender.

      Make it five way but only positions 3 4 and 5 do anything

    • @indiefruit
      @indiefruit 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      People are overlooking the potential funkiness that can be achieved with 2nd position

  • @mrmixalotcreative5847

    Classic example of tone in the way he plays . . . the bit he played with no compressor was still just so tight and funky and compressed, because that's how he plays it. Dude is a downright tasty guitarist

      Haha I always tell my students this! The instrument matters much less than you think, the musicianship is key

      its so much in his hands and so little in the gear....way more that I expected

    • @RobFeldkamp
      @RobFeldkamp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No doubt he is an insane musician but something tells me the recording and TH-cam compression add a lot of audio compression. It sounds just as compressed.

    • @KPSMUSIK
      @KPSMUSIK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I might be wrong but I am about 99% sure that he pushes the power section of the amp quite hard, so when he picks hard, the headroom of his amp maxes out and therefore tube amp saturation/compression is happening. It is one of the best sounds and can only experience it with a cranked (vintage) style amp to that extent. If you reach that level of power amp saturation, you also need way less overdrive (preamp gain/volume) to get a sound that sounds more driven and punchy. There is no way that this level of compression is coming from his playing or his hands, no matter how hard someone hits. If he would play the same way on a, let's say transistor amp, or 100w tube amp, that isn't cranked, he would not have this level of compression and sound. Don't get me wrong, this is not to discredit him or his playing, he is phenomenal and plays insanely good. It is rather to point out, that there are limits to how good someone can make a signal chain sound. If you want to get the experience I had when realizing this, try a Marshall Studio 15 Vintage with a Power Soak (this is essential), play with the volume of the amp and limit the actual volume by using the power soak. Hear and feel the natural saturation and compression coming in and going away once you dial the master back. Good luck and enjoy your day guys!

    I've only recently discovered Vulfpeck less than a year ago, but I love their funk. Dean Town has such a amazing bass line and the guitar comes in with a clear and strong attack. Interesting to see that his picking style came from acoustic because that's kind of the root of where I started getting my funk style. I don't always play funk but my strat on the neck-middle position and my compressor make funk so chunky and strong. I love it.

    Actually, judging from his right hand, i think he’s picking pretty hard...

      Yea he says he picks light but he’s definitely on the aggressive side just by hearing him.

      Yeah, you can hear all his attacks pretty clearly, even without the compression.

    I always assumed Cory used MAD compression. Turns out his pick ups just have a lot of punch.
