Metal Armor Dragonar was meant to be marketed as "the 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam anime for the next generation" but without using the Gundam name branding but failed to kick-off due to the popularity of Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam airing roughly at the same time, but it is still popular enough to have a big fan base, it is basically like a AU Gundam but not using the Gundam name.
You mean 1989? 1979 was the year MS Gundam was originally released.

And that is pretty clear from the premise and a lot of the aspects of the show which are directly lifted from 0079. It even has its own Char and Sayla. Oddly enough, I feel like Dragonar is the first try with what Sunrise would later do with Seed. Probably would have turned out better for it had it been a new Gundam timeline show. But I suppose when Dragonar was made (87, I think) Gundam was still UC-only and Sunrise hadn't even thought of expanding into different timelines yet.

Seriously, that intro is probably one of the best anime intros of all time.
This was supposed to be the spiritual successor of Gundam anime at one point.
Never true, Dragonar was never a spiritual successor really, the only evidence that the Wikipedia showed of this is has like no link not to mention no people who have worked on this said that

Get me back in the days, 1987, with the older kits. Got the Dragonar 3 and my very first Gundam, 1/144 ZZ Gundam.

I recently built mine and it's incredibly great so I do highly recommend it especially for fans of the anime
As someone who owns the Macross Plus YF-19 and considers it the best thing I've ever built, Gundam or not, I can't wait to build this and see how well Bandai handled another, lesser-known anime in their High Grade line.
Knew of Dragonar from an old PS1 game, Real Robots Final Attack. Didn't have a Saturn to play Virtual-On, so this was the next best thing, lol. Anyway, the anime was ok, but felt a bit lacking. But the hours I put in playing this character more than makes up for it and didn't hesitate to get it in my backlog, lol.
It's like Windom from the 80s!
The color scheme of the Dragonar-1 reminds me more of the F-15 ACTIVE than a race car tbh
To be fair, I personally compare the Dragonars to G-Witch's Gundams. Feels like they all go well together.

A lot of my new release kits I bought from Bandai last year was non-Gundam stuff or Kotobukiya.
Doesn't help that there's not much regular release Gunpla last year.
The only 2022 kit I bought was the gaogaigar and the goldymarg.....ichiban kuji mg barbatos might count too since it's in the lottery for 2022 lok
Panel lining doesn't look too promising, but it's a beautiful kit.

Is it possible to ommit the Mercedes logo on the chest? By that I’m asking if the vent mesh detail part has cutouts to fit the aforementioned centerpiece.
I thought about the same thing! You can omit the part, yes. However, where the bottom point of the yellow part crosses the white chest part will leave a small gap there

Despite being a pretty shameless ripoff of 0079 (yet still made by Sunrise) and having some serious flaws, I really liked Dragonar. It was a light hearted take on Gundam without being annoying like ZZ. And it features a non-toxic romance, something which I haven't found to be common in Gundam.
I have been looking at this kit, but it seems to be pretty hard to find. And the sites that do carry it sell it for a hefty premium. I hope I can find one for a reasonable price someday.

The upside down Mercedes logo to me is the only aspect of the design I’m not fond of. Aside from that it looks pretty cool.
That makes it for me! It reminds me of the opening logo for Christine, which itself looks like the Gundam V fin.

@@BLAZE084 Christine is a movie about a haunted car that kills people. The car in question is a Plymouth fury, which shares its faceted V logo with Gundam fins.

love the aesthetics, see the new gundams all have this big issue of silloheute, they ALL look like over designed spikey idiots that would not be able to move due to "wings" and "spikes" etc
If you think that is bad on Gundam, wait until you look at 3rd party Chinese Gundam or vaguely "Gundam" stuff
Gundam aerial isn't spiky :(
