  • www.autobytel.com/new-cars/for... Ford has created a new feature that helps the driver back-up a trailer more easily. There is a knob that allows you to steer the trailer which takes the guess work out of backing -up a trailer. This feature works in conjunction with the reverse camera by using a target (sticker) placed on the trailer that the camera system recognizes.

      Hey man I thought it was stupid also but after 2 year of owing the truck I finally used it to back down this really long driveway last week it's amazing keeping the trailer straight an 1/8th mile never having to pull forward once

    • @GregoryVeizades
      @GregoryVeizades 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah. It's a dumb mentality. You can still do it manually if you want to, because you have that options. But the micro adjustments needed for straight backing are quite tiring and hard to get right even for experienced trailer towers. This just takes that mental load off of you.

    Everyone bitches about this! I think it's pretty neat, you got to give Ford credit for this. The "If you can't back up, you shouldn't tow it" comments are beyond annoying. If you don't like it, don't buy it!! It's as easy as that people.

    I like technology, I do believe in change but some stuff I'm old school about. If you take the time you can learn to back up a trailer with ease. Repetition is the mother of learning. I sucked at backing up a trailer attached but with determination and practice im a pro.The one thing I do like is the back up cameras that have the center dotted line on the screen for the hitch.

  • @27dtrost
    @27dtrost 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Does the system still work when you are backing up on uneven terrain? Say you're on a flat street and you need to back up a steep driveway, when the trailer starts to go up the steep driveway the sticker on the trailer would get closer to the camera. Would that cause the system to malfunction?

    I think it's a pretty cool gizmo to have on board. By the way it has an on-off button - so you do have a choice ( code for - use it or don't use it) . It cost about $800.00 on a new truck, that's soda pop money.

    I thought was a gimmick as well, with 30+ years of driving and backing up with a trailer, what did I need this feature for? I just bought an F150 from dealer stock. It had all the options I wanted plus this feature. I find this comes in handy is when backing up my utility trailer with nothing on it. It sits below the sight line of the truck, and with the tongue jack, I can't put the tailgate down to improve my line of sight. This feature allows me to easily back up into tight spaces with having to resort to sight flags on the back of the trailer. Oh and contrary to many of the comments, the feature cost very little as there is no additional hardware require, it's software and the basic camera systems already in place on these vehicles.

    My 2017 backup assist turn on and off on its own, when I press the breaks or release the brakes. Even when the trailer is on I have the same issue. Went to Ford early winter about 4 times and they just reset the module. They said they would change the module if it keeps happening. Went again and they said they won't do it because Ford is working on the problem. Spring is here and nothing. It's the most frustrating thing to deal with, having to hear that warning sound pop up each time to press the breaks. Super fun when it's a stop and go situation. And yes, I tell the computer that there's no trailer, still does it. Im considering trading my truck for a Chevy just because of this and my transmission issues.

    It's not just Ford that's making driving "Safe for Simpletons". All car companies have assist features that really aren't needed if your a competent driver. ABS is just a computer doing controlled braking. Traction control is just to save people who drive too fast in certain situations.
    On top of this, the DMV in NC gave my teenage daughter a license after a freaking 8 minute driving test (written portion was 20 minutes).
    I'm all for technological advances but not at the expense of learning a skill.

    • @zenith828
      @zenith828 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +muchie3791 "assist features that really aren't needed if your a competent driver. ABS is just a computer doing controlled braking" It's unrealistic to expect that a human could out perform a modern ABS in daily driving with changing road conditions. Even the most experienced drivers can get into situations were ABS can save their lives. There is a reason it is a legally mandated system.

    • @afterburn2600
      @afterburn2600 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have raced regionally SCCA for years with a decent amount of success, had lots of seat time in varying conditions and vehicles, saved various cars more times than I can remember on road and track, and blah blah blah. In the end, I've still put a sports car (inspected the day prior both mechanically and tires) into a guard rail during a torrential downpour while going under the speed limit. By all accounts I did everything I could have (barring going less than the minimum speed) but it still wasn't enough. The car had none of these newfangled traction control aids which could have saved a beautiful vehicle (AP1 S2000) from the wall demons.
      Also, you say it's the state's responsibility to ensure your own children know how to drive? In NC? I thought that was a conservative state which touted self-reliance rather than state-mandated babysitting... ;)
      I long for the days of manual spark advance and having to crank start my vehicles. I'll not be reliant on technology to replace my skill. Oh wait...maybe I should just be walking or running since the horseless carriage is just a technology which humans have used to remove a skill. Bah! McDonald's and Ruth's Chris have removed our skill of cooking! Banish all restaurants! And don't let anyone build you a shelter - that would be removing your skills as a master carpenter extraordinaire. But you'd better use your hands building it - that's the real skill. Manual everything.
      *Captain Snark out* Learn your skills best you can for the technology available and drive safe :) We all just wanna get home. Or launch a boat but suck at it (for the record I'm perfectly comfortable using the bigger wheel immediately in front of me for trailer work).

    I have a neighbor (musician) than can really use this. He has a lot of trouble getting his boat backed in and he scares the chit out of everyone every time he takes the boat out. My dad taught me to back a swivel front wheel trailer with a tractor when I was a kid and that has transferred into my brain adapting to any trailer backing situation without even thinking about it. however I cannot play a single musical note where my neighbor really JAMS. I would like to play a guitar like my neighbor does. I am thinking that maybe I can get Gibson Guitar to produce a stealth guitar that will play itself........ I actually appreciate Ford's efforts I have seen some knuckle draggers that had a lot of trouble backing a boat into a tight spot also LOL

    Cant back it up? Don't pull it. Pulling a trailer comes down to a competency that is expected and must be learned. "Oh Ill rely on my trailer back up system." And when that fails? Back on your own.
    Also there is no guesswork when you appreciate what you're doing and you practice.

    • @NordicNevs
      @NordicNevs 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can see this absolutely, however when the trailer disappears you have a visual in your head of where that trailer is, also you know by turning the wheel to the left and to the right the appreciate actions will be passed down to the trailer. In all I can see where for some this can help but in all honesty I still could not justify the added cost to benefit.

    • @NordicNevs
      @NordicNevs 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +WildAndLiving you're correct. Ford seems to have the operator control the system with the brake but there are different motions that can cause the truck to behave differently while under load and on an incline. Bottom line some folks will use this. Unfortunately the human element is becoming lost due to technology. I'm not anti tech but I am against technology dependence. Innovation and creation are what makes our country great but come on lol this is getting pretty damn yuppie status.

      @chronomasakari 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are tons of people who own trucks that can't drive a trailer worth a shit. I'd rather give them something to help them not suck at it then accidentally do actual damage because they think it's easy to pick up on the fly.

    • @chronomasakari
      @chronomasakari 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DangerRanger247 I would also prefer everyone learn how to do everything before they get on the road as well, but I understand the reality is it's not like there's an extensive driving test to drive a trailer in the civilian world so the odds of people just hooking one up at a u-haul and driving away are fairly high. I view this as a tool helping them not back the trailer into the neighbor's backyard the first time they try to do so.
      I wouldn't be too worried about it failing for the most part because this is a convenience feature used in slower speed environment so damage done would be a lot smaller in comparison then a "safety crutch" like say those 360 cameras where someone reliant on those would be more likely to get in an accident should they fail suddenly.

    Adding technology to help people who can't drive on their own is ridiculous. Who needs technology to do thing that they should be able to do on their own. Get rid of power steering, power brakes, auto transmissions, GPS, cruise control, power door locks, power windows, and don't even get me started on 10 way power seats. If you cannot drive without this technology, you should not be driving. It is amazing how some people will put down technology or even people who use the technology, but themselves are using all sorts of it themselves. Ideally every driver should be able to back a trailer without fancy technology, but for guys like me that back a trailer once every few years, I'm looking forward to this new technology. I'll probably use the onboard GPS to get to the trailer rental store.

    The funny thing is, the steering wheel is similar to the knob: To steer the trailer to the left, you turn the knob (or the steering wheel) to the left. To steer the trailer to the right, you turn the knob (or the steering wheel) to the right. IT'S MAGIC! The upgrade costs $2600, but you can learn to back up a trailer pretty well with several hours of similar practice and you can do it for free.
    I actually recommend mounting fiberglass whips on the 4 corners of low trailers like this, which helps the driver see the trailer angle. This helps immensely!

    The problem with backing a trailer is not that you have to turn the wheel the opposite way. This part is easy. It's how much do you start cutting the trailer before turning the wheel straight and have the trailer continue on it's path. It's easy to over or under steer a trailer then you have to pull forward a bit and continue. It's not easy unless you have tons of experience. Cudos to Ford for a great feature. I think all the Chevy vs Ford fans are jealous and are giving themselves a reason to believe they don't need this feature on a Chev.
    If the Chev people can't accept a trailer backup assist then I urge them to throw their microwaves in the garbage and cook their food manually on the stovetop. Common people it works great, and if you want to use it go ahead, if not then do it manually. That's why their is an on/off button. Use it only if you want to. I think this is genius and would help backing trailers into tight spots such as along side the house for parking or into a tight wooded camping spot, etc... If you have a wide driveway and lots of room then yes it's easy to back the trailer, but this technology is not just another reason for Chev fanboys to bash Ford. In my opinion all trucks are equal and you buy the one you like.

    My question is what about the truck itself - I've been in situations where you have limited space to maneuver and I can't imagine a computer suddenly telling the truck to turn the wheels only to hit whatever is right next to you, just because you want the boat over a little bit. Also, what about jackknifing the trailer? Any safety on that - I can see that happening - "No - I want the trailer further over!!! *bang*"
    My issue is not with the system itself, but with the fact that you're learning a new skill (monitoring the computer-controlled truck while turning a wheel to point a trailer) just to replace another skill (monitoring the you-controlled truck while turning a wheel to point a trailer). Maybe if I tried the system it would change my mind - I try to stay open to new tech and avoid judgement until I try it myself.

      Ok I exaggerated a little bit. But I was really guessing for more than $2000. It seems like an option that depends on other options. Meaning it can't be added without heavy trailer tow. Which gets a little expensive.

    its an interesting idea, but i feel like a person is much more in tune with their vehicle when they are actually driving a trailer. i feel like i would plow into something while using this system

    I hate when someone says "turn the knob to the left". "Left" and "right" are linear directions. "Clockwise" and "counter-clockwise" are the proper terms for circular directions. This is especially true for backing trailers. If you want the trailer to move to the left, you turn the steering wheel clockwise. Saying "to make the trailer move left, turn the steering wheel right" is both confusing and wrong. Put your hands on the bottom of the steering wheel and pay attention to the direction your hands move if you want to get an idea of what direction the trailer will go.

    1st you left out the key part to this feature is the process of getting out of the truck and measuring the distance to place the sticker then the distance of the frame then the distance of the camera to trailer Axel then you have to get in the truck and input all these measurement's into the computer then your finally ready to use the back up feature.
    2nd by the time it takes you to do all those measurements I'll have that trailer backed up into whatever spot you want. lol yes I know you only have to measure once for each trailer but get real, learn how to back up so you can hook up any trailer any time and back that thing up like a boss.

    I just couldn't get use to using something like this especially since I'm backing up oversize load in excess of 100 ft long and 16 ft wide. I have way less wheel movement backing up oversize loads in 500 yards than this crap in 10 feet.

      +Seth Rippee It's about as hard to learn to use as just using the rear view camera instead of the rear view mirror. I put my hand on the bottom of the wheel when I back my trailers and do exactly the same thing, move my hand left to steer the trailer left, right for right.

    The craziest thing about this is that to me it looks more complicated than just doing it yourself. Backing up a trailer isn't difficult. This is just extra junk that you have to think about. Guarantee this causes more problems than it solves. That being said, good on Ford for coming up with something new.
