I am not trying to be pessimistic, but listening to the questions being asked by the audiences, it really gives us much concerns on their mindset, especially those younger generations, that is mainly focusing on political viewpoint and blind resistance on China, which is possibly influenced by the lavishing of the so-called democracy & freedom by the Western world, and the revision of the education syllabus during the recent decades.

@@dewinmoonl It's easier said than done. With all the younger generations who have been taught all negative things about China through the revised education syllabus, coupled with the political narratives being played by the DPP government and its total control on the media, it's a difficult task for China to turn things around. The only way to change the mindset of Taiwanese is through reverting back to the original education syllabus that tells the real history of China when reunification is achieved, not the history of China that was fabricated by the DPP.

George Yeo speaks from the heart as a true ethnic Chinese, who has the interest and well-being of all the Chinese people of China and Taiwan. His idea of China-Taiwan's peaceful reunification through dialogue and mutual respect is brilliant. America does not want to see any forms of reunification beyond Mainland and Taiwan, therein losing its “unsinkable aircraft carrier” in the form of the island. Unfortunately, most politicians in Taiwan do not have the wisdom or courage to take Taiwan the right way, for which Ma and Xi have both laid the foundation via the meeting in Singapore. DPP is not really for the Independence of Taiwan but rather uses this cause for their personal and the party's gains, as evidenced by a series of serious corruptions committed by the government and the party. Taiwan will be reunited with the mainland one day and it will be a shame for all Chinese if a war has to break out between the two sides of the strait for the benefit of the US.

    • @paulchen2224

it will definitely be a shame for all Chinese for a war to happen over Taiwan to decide on the loyalty as well as the country citizenship just because of politics and political affinity, and a laughing disgrace in front of the world. Despite several dynasties change that happened in the past thousands of years ago, such thing had never happened.

Before the Civil War KMT was ruling China and due to corruption the peasants 'vote' with their lives by joining Mao Tse Tung. KMT lose three major battles before escaped to Taiwan. It is a great speach from Mr. Yeo. It showed his love to Taiwan and its people and China in whole. It also showed his earnest call to the Taiwan government to come to the table with the mainland before things get out of control. Unfortunately given the current hostile attitude from Taiwan government to the mainland, I am afraid his calls will fall on deaf ears of those Taiwan political elites - not just the DPP, but across the board, including majority of the KMT.

I shared this comment after listening to the panel discussion, which is a followup from this keynote speech.... If Han Taiwanese cannot trust the CPC, then China goes back in time fighting against each other to establish a new dynasty. We have moved beyond that barbaric period, and now in a new age where the world needs to work together in this one single ship, heading into the same direction. China, perhaps is the only capable Captain who can take this leadership role now. This Captainship role obviously has to be respectfully gained from like-minded leaders (who work for their citizen) of the other countries. Put it in another way..... if Xinjiang people can trust their CPC now after such a long struggle, why can't the Han Taiwanese?

I hope the Taiwanese listen to this, while Mr Yeo’s view does not speaks doesn’t represents all the people in the world, but at least the majority of the Chinese be it in Mia land or overseas Chinese.
2nd point is that all those countries the have ties with mainland china, (which majority if not all) have acknowledged one china policy. So in the event of war, most if not all major countries have a ‘one china’ policy and unlikely to interfere. It’s a lose battle for Taiwanese to start with. Don’t compare yourself to Ukraine because not many countries on earth recognised Taiwan as a sovereign country. That only left with US and maybe some allies in the first island chain. The question is, will these countries able or willing to defend Taiwan at the risk of their existence?( that is if they believe china’s policy, that TW is the red line). I’m quite sure these countries won’t take the risk, and the end result is quite clear.. (above is the worse case scenario)
Like what Mr Yeo says, while Tw has bargaining power, it should start as soon as possible to resolve this, on the presumption of china collapsed and divided, and tw can take the opportunity to be independent is a very wrong move as a government, a capable gov always proactive take action, based on the current situation based on probability take the best solution that is in favour of their citizens.(just look at SG, during Covid, proactive, and ensure sg emerge stronger after crisis)
The Chinese will looks highly on Taiwan, that’s why another name for Taiwan is 宝岛 aka treasure island in Chinese. If not for last resort, I’m quite sure they will not destroyed tw.
For a common citizen, what u want is the freedom ( how u define it is up to discussion), job, and a future to look forward to… u are staying in which country does that matter?
