the spatial connotations that the scenes in this painting depict are so relevant now as they were almost 400 years ago.Just amazing a true work of art,
Wonderful explanation! Thank you. I think the idle man with toothache is just too idle to use a potty, too idle to go to the dentist, and fulfils Ecclesiastes 10:18 "Because of laziness the building decays, And through idleness of hands the house leaks."
who the hell has enough time to think of all of this and then paint it... other than obviously this guy... awesome but damn I would never have the patience for that
At about 13:03, where it says "To have to stoop to get on in the world," is there another proverb that relates to his foot gear? He has some kind of knee pad/shoe contraption on his right foot and calf, and the left is bare. Anyone know?

Very creative. Amazing that Bruegel could picturise so many proverbs in a single painting.
The Italian Renaissance produced the finest works, aesthetically speaking, but the brilliance and insight that had Bruegel beat any ninja turtles...
I love this painting!
incredble work. if only we have similar paintings for other cultures too. that would be amazing.
