- The civil war in Sudan is quickly becoming the world's most dire humanitarian crisis. While the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine are overshadowing it, the fighting in Sudan has escalated sharply over the past year, leading to mass displacement and widespread starvation. However, despite the gravity of the crisis, the conflict is receiving limited international attention, leading many to refer to it as a "forgotten war."
The Republic of Sudan, located in northeast Africa and bordering the Red Sea, is rich in history and cultural diversity. Its history includes periods under Ancient Egyptian domination, Christian Nubian kingdoms, the Ottoman Empire, and British Colonial rule. However, following independence in 1956, the new country was plunged into a prolonged and brutal civil war between the Arab Muslim North and the African Christian South. This lasted until 2011, when South Sudan became independent. Since then, the country has also been affected by a brutal conflict in Darfur, where a brutal Arab militia, the Janjaweed, carried out genocide against local Sub-Saharan African ethnic groups. However, the current crisis emerged after the military overthrew the country’s longstanding dictator, Omar al Bashir, in 2019. Once close allies, the leaders of the coup have since fallen out. This has seen the Army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, come to blows with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Deputy Army Chief General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (also known as Hamedti). As the civil war enters its second year with no resolution in sight and the UN calls for billions in aid, the world remains distracted by other international events.

Like many others, I have often found it interesting how some conflicts get so much attention, yet others seem to attract next to no broader interest. Sudan is a really great case in point. A year ago, there was huge coverage of the evacuations. And then it went quiet. And yet, it is now emerging as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
The best way I think I can frame the reason why some conflicts get attention and others do not is that there needs to be an opponent that causes opinion to coalesce. Ukraine's opponent is Russia, the old boogeyman of America and the West, which throws things into sharp focus when people recall the dangers posed by the old Soviet Union, thus forming large groups with an interest in how things play out, with Gaza, the opponent is cast as Israel, who is a country that engenders popular opposition from the more extreme left elements. Sudan lacks an opponent that matters to Western Media, much like a lot of Africa, it's not seen as important from a media standpoint.
Thank you for covering this topic. I am Sudanese, and I think the situation in my country is not getting the media attention it deserves. The situation is clearly out of control, and it needs to be addressed today before it turns into a desatster, which could further destabilise an already anarchic situation in North East and horn of Africa.

The RFS ( Janjaweed militias ) are openly allied with the Jewish state, The RFS under its leader Dagalo has committing and continue to commit acts of genocide and crimes against humanity not only on Suddens Arab specking sub Sharen Africans but also on Arab Africans Sudanese, originally the RFS were used by the army to assist them in fighting the rebellion in darfur . I am disappointed that Prof James didn’t highlight enough that RFS and there leader Dagalo are the bad apples and are the only group responsible for genocide even now against African Muslim tribes in Durfur , furthermore the conflicts in Sudan are fueled by foreign players from the colonial period to this day , fueling culture and religious and identity divisions that would certainly be avoidable largely if it wasn’t for foreign interference .

Thanks Professor. The world is currently a world in conflict. We have the war in Ukraine, the war in Gaza, anarchy in Haiti, civil wars in Sudan and Myanmar. Last but not least, more tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

I’ve said this before and every time I see people talk about Sudan and wonder why it’s not getting talked about. I feel like it only reinforces my point to a degree.
There’s no romance in this war. There’s no righteous struggle against an oppressor, there’s no foreign nation invading Sudan out of the blue and people fighting for their life to simply exist.
It’s just two power-hungry warlords who want all the powered for themselves, and are willing to kill each other, and anyone else who gets in their way in order to achieve it.
It’s war in its oldest and most cruelest (yet purist) form..

For most people, it’s also just yet another African crisis-a continent where many Westerners can barely identify one country from another. I think many have written the continent off as a part of the world where this sort of thing just happens and don’t give it a second thought.

I'm Sudanese and currently living in sudan. Great video, as always . I would just like to correct some of the things you said : although the media calls it a civil war, THIS IS NOT A CIVIL WAR . Hemetti started a rebellion against the government after his international allies (UAE) and leftist political parties (FFC) persuaded him to do so. Hemetti then, and with the aid of UAE, gathered mercenaries from chad,centeral africa, Libya,and yemen, and so you have mercenaries in the RSF fighting Sudanese in the military . Not to mention there's is not a single sudani that would do the horrible stuff the RSF is currently doing to his sudani brothers.
With that said i thank you so much for talking about the situation in sudan. No body seems to know or care about the amount of atrocities committed in sudan which is the real atrocity
Indeed, it is NOT A CIVIL WAR. They wanted to control Sudan's resources but they did so by using Hemetti and his militia. It is sad to see how someone could destroy a whole country just to get more money.

Excellent content. Pointing out the absence of coverage/information on this conflict is very important. The foundation in this tragic situation we see pre-date the colonial era and seem to be a classic situation of factional efforts of groups attempting to gain political power. The vast scope & scale of this situation compared to events in Gaza are enormous and the humanitarian disaster that is developing needs world attention. Thank you for having this as your topic. Many small voices combined add up and the will result in world attention. Keep up your excellent work.

Hi Andrew, thank you so much as always for the great comment. You are absolutely right. There are deep roots to this conflict, but indeed the current fighting is really just about warlordism. It is truly tragic that so many lives could be affected in this way because of the ambition of these individuals. But it is a story we have seen throughout history. Meanwhile, sadly, the issue just isn’t getting any international traction in needs and deserves. Many just look away, even though, in a coldly rational way, it is a fascinating story. As it happens, the viewing figures on the video are right down, even amongst regular channel viewers.
@puraLusa Thanks. Great point. Federalisation could and probably should have been the answer from the outset. But it does seem that the country may yet be drifting towards further division, I hope to come back to the question of Darfur again in a future video.
Once again ...mismanagement by the Colonial power Britain I'd the root cause of this problem. Specifically- poorly thought-out boundaries with disregard for religious differences of the administered population.

James, when the entire world ignored the Sudanese situation and pretended that we were not even on this earth, you talked about my country and tried your hardest to bring attention to it on a global scale. In all honesty, the world community has been blatantly ignoring the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, and even humanitarian organizations appear unwilling to lend their support to this hurting nation at this critical juncture.
according to MSF report made over the weak in north Darfur, The mortality rate increased 20-fold from April onwards, reaching 2.25 deaths per 10,000 people per day, with a peak in June; 83 per cent of those killed were men. Violence, particularly with firearms, was the cause of death in 82 per cent of cases. The majority of deaths took place in El Geneina, while a quarter occurred while people were fleeing to Chad. Nearly one man in 20 aged between 15 and 44 was reported missing during this period.
This is very small from a big tragic story of Sudan, hope continue your contribution to this nation until international community could remember that there's a whole nation on this planet ( Sudanese) is suffering a tragic humanitarian Crisis.

Thank you for bringing attention to this, as a dual Sudanese-British I am directly affected by this inattention, I was forced to flee Sudan where I lived all of my life, to the UK, with an unfinished degree, and when attempting to transfer I was faced by ordinary residence checks (while others from Afghanistan and Ukraine had exemptions) and was told I must pay non-UK fees to continue studying and that I am not supposed to get funding from the government, totally disregarding that I was forced out of home and robbed out of my stuff like many others living in Sudan.
I am so sorry to hear about the terrible problems you have faced. That is truly awful. One would hope there would be a little more understanding given everything that you been through! I just hope that things improve soon.

We do have different views on foreign relations and policy. I do not see the lack of attention to this, or other, conflicts in Africa as being primarily an information bandwidth issue. I see it as a result of the outside world not being able to do much to stop such conflicts. When looking at what it would take to really resolve this conflict, and the others in Africa, it is clear that the cost in blood and treasure required is not in the interests of just about any outside nation.
I personally have been interested in this region since I was a boy. One of my grandfathers was very interested in everything and had a subscription to the National Geographic. The was a lot of coverage of Africa, of course, in the magazine. This was over half a century ago. He was from a poor area in the central Peloponnese, called Arcadia. As was typical, he had a fourth-grade education. As with all my grandparents he emigrated to the US and became a successful. He was the one who got me interested in foreign affairs. Being born in Washington, DC didn't hurt either. I remember following what was happening in Eritrea, as well as Rhodesia, South Africa, Angola, Uganda, Nigeria, etc. That certainly makes my perspective somewhat unusual, I will admit. I have since met people from Uganda and Eritrea, and frankly they were reluctant to discuss their homelands. One even tried to hide his origin (Uganda) from me for a while.
Perhaps what the Russians are doing, through the Wagner Group, in Sudan and throughout Africa, is the only rational response. They use Wagner to secure access to natural resources, not to try to resolve any of the pressing issues in the region. That is not to say I support what they are doing. On the other hand, Africa today seems to be what Africa has always been to the Europeans, a source of natural resources.
I also have a bit of a problem with making this about civilian suffering. This is typical for people in international organizations. It generally does not resolve anything to concentrate on these issues. Even if a ceasefire can be effected on humanitarian grounds, it almost never resolves the underlying issues and thus things will flare up again, sometimes more violently.
Thank you Prof for reminding the world of our suffering. We have been let down by everyone its like we are not human and our suffering doesn't matter to the world

The world is seething and roiling right now. Not unlike the situations and tensions in the periods of 1905-1914, and 1933-1939. We know how those turned out. Destruction, death, and chaos is coming, sadly.

The hunger crisis in Sudan is as good as forgotten. The hunger victims in Sudan will be largely abandoned. Sudan was never in the international radar. Now, with the ongoing war in Gaza, most aid and attention will be diverted and focused on Gaza.

Great point about the lack of a specific question. It suddenly struck me when I went to write the comment under the video. In truth, there really wasn't much to ask. I guess I felt that this video was more about awareness than anything else. It certainly felt that way when I was writing the script this week. Here is a conflict with millions of people in immediate danger, and yet it just isn't getting any international attention it deserves and needs.

As you mentioned the situation isn't just deteriorated but unlivable due to ongoing war and relentless confrontation.
As l live in north Kordofan Elobeid city which RSF imposed severe siege on on it and denied any relief supply, medical supply and commuters to get in that caused lack of food and acute shortage water, 80% of citizens don't have economic means to parent their families and make all ends meet and many children were nourishing as well they live in dire situation.

Great video, Professor. This conflict is very interesting to me. It was caused by the greed of two men trying to overcome the other and gain all the power, resulting in a devastating escalation and in a sort of game where external powers like Russia, Ukraine, the UAE, and Iran aligned themselves with a side in order to secure their own interests post-war. I really hope the Sudanese people can find peace, but I see it as very difficult.

Hi, I did a bit of soldiering in the Muscat & Oman in the early 1960’s and we worked with the TOS and many of them were recruited from Balochistan. As soldiers do we compared our soldiering histories and background and I learned very quickly that these Scouts had been at war all their lives. Later, having spoken to Sher Muhammad Bijrani Marri, I really got the details of their struggle for their own homeland and how they believed that they had been sold out by the British Government at the time of the forming of the State Pakistan. Obviously, I have followed their attempt’s for their own sovereignty ever since. Now that so called insurrection has been going on since the participation of India to this day. Now that is a long, long war for independence equivalent to the Palestinians, in my opinion! Cheers mate

I think the biggest reason that some conflicts receive more attention than others is because many people seek a "narrative" for a conflict. They want there to be a villain and a hero. While opinions will wildly diverge for Israel/Palestine and Ukraine and Russia most people in the West at least have some knowledge of the countries and this will allow them to decide which side they support. In many ways, this turns intentional conflicts into spectator sports. And just like watching a sport if you don't understand what is happening, it is hard to take a side. This saddens me as I often feel like in the West we treat actual real-world conflicts and the associated horrors with the same reverence we would for a football match.
And when it comes to Sudan people in the West just don't know much about the country, either its history or the current situation. I would wager at least in America less than 10% of the population could even accurately point to Sudan on a map. And to compound issues this isn't a conflict with an easy-to-form opinion. Neither side has a particular moral high ground, as it is essentially two men vying for power.
And adding to this is that for-profit media companies will show stories people are interested in, which sadly does not include Sudan. And since Sudan doesn't get media coverage people don't learn about the conflict. Which creates a feedback loop, people aren't interested so the media doesn't talk about it, and since the media doesn't talk about it people don't learn enough to become interested.
Thank you so much for such a great comment. I think you have really hit the nail on the head. You’re absolutely right. I’ve often thought that we (societies) have tended to watch conflict as an extreme form of spectator sport. I remember the first Gulf War, back in 1991. That was the first conflict in human history that was watched from a distance in real time. It was quite something at the time. The CNN reporting coming out of Baghdad and from Israel was something utterly new. And now in the social media age it has become even more extreme. Just consider the images from Ukraine or Gaza. But underneath it we do indeed still need to feel that we understand the sides and root for one or the other. As you say, Sudan misses this factor. Thanks again.

Thank you for bringing this up; it is the forgetting war with more than 50 thousand killed and 11 million displaced. You can't imagine the suffering of the Sudanese, but the international community will never broader as it is happening in Africa

Red cross in Sudan also has its strange policy, not cleare, what kind of help they provide.Ppl ask for help was send by them, to "other org"..its just run arround help.Ppl has no jobs or money to run from org to orgs..is it a "special treatment ?"

Southward spread of Islam seems to be the common nominator of most of African problems these days.
I wouldn’t cast this conflict as religious, at least not in that way. Almost all the Sudanese population is Muslim.
Many in the international community have dubious motives and weaponize the suffering of Gaza to attack Israel. The Hyper focusing on Gaza has had deleterious consequences for Sudan and other humanitarian crises around the world.
The term proportionality get thrown around when it comes to the IDF, perhaps we should also apply this term for UN relief agencies so that people who are suffering from conflicts that don’t receive as much media coverage are able to get a proportional amount of assistance
Civil war and invasion are two different things, mediation between the two opposing sides in sudan were made multiple times yet did not result in anything, the african union, arab league, Saudi arabia, egypt, US all tried

@@mohamedabdukadir3271 It's the same as the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict or some other conflicts itself, in which the interests/concerns of all stakeholders have not yet converged in the negotiation table. It's, thus, why the conflict remains prevalent, and a deal still elusive?!
@@tenglim4406 someone can put together a campaign for a suffering child in Gaza and people will raise 100’s of thousands of dollars. A child in Sudan nobody knows or cares. Both Childs suffering are equal, but yet the humanitarian concern is disproportionate. Both of the children are are Arab Muslims so the only way that I can make sense of this phenomenon is that the motives for giving to one and not to the other has to do with the individuals calling themselves humanitarians, and there motives are political or ideological which is a corruption of humanitarianism.

Thank you. This point is occasionally raised. I have thought about this carefully. The problem is that without the background music the videos sound very flat. In fact, my retention went up after I started using it. For most listeners it adds an almost imperceptible extra element to the video. But know that for a very small minority it can be a little distracting. I am sorry about this. By the way, it also seems to depend on the headphones one uses. On my AirPods I can barely hear it. On my monitor headphones I use to edit the sound, it is much more audible.

I left my house and my stuff behind, I couldn't carry my passport and documents with me, even my house couldn't see it anymore because the RSF looted everything in it, II just got to see it in the pictures.
I am surprised to hear that Russia and Ukraine are involved in this conflict and I am also surprised that you chose not to mention the involvement of Egypt and KSA who Support General Al Burhan and UAE and Ethiopia who support General Dagalo Hameti. Also These generals were partners in crime with Al Bashir and that Dogalo was groomed by Al Bashir who also named him Hameti which means my guardian or protector. Obviously Al Bashir didn’t trust his own army so he had a private army on the side to protect him from his army. Therefore the two generals didn’t like each other and they never got alone. Hameti had full control of the gold mines and traded them in Dubai. The Army had full control of many state manufacturing companies and agriculture. The main reason the two generals started the conflict was when general Al Burhan decided to dissolve the RSF and create one National Army. Perhaps you should do another video on how the UAE is getting involved in the Horn of Africa including how UAE is behind Ethiopia’s MoU with Somali Land.
Thanks. This wasn’t meant to be a full account of the civil war. I only mentioned the Russia-Ukraine angle because it was curious. The main point of the video was to highlight the sheer scale of the tragedy facing Sudan and the fact that it is receiving next to no international attention.
@@JamesKerLindsay thank you for the brief and concise historical account and the conflict but if you mention proxy conflict and try to implicate Russia and Ukraine then it is becomes imperative that you also mention the others who are complicating the conflict and adding fuel to fire particularly UAE, Ethiopia, KSA and Egypt.

Some people don't know Janjawee become RSF and RSF is the Janjawee. Now Dagalo acusing Burhan terrorists when he was the one terrorizing Sudanese in Danfur.
The creation of RSF to subdued Danfur uprise let to Sudan civil war. Sudan didn't forsee creation special and independent branch of army would challange the traditional army.
The RSF was terrozing Danfur region under Janjawee( the devils on the horses) and then become RSF.

Theres a difference between forgotten and accepting that civil wars can only be solved internally. This has been true for most of world history.
But it is not a civil war . RSF are multinational gangs funded by UAE and Wagner group.
