For awareness Bond's original pistol was a .25 Beretta 418, a very popular officers pistol in the Italian army, plus for anyone who could get their hands on them (as German officer's were 'acquiring them' when still allies), including captured ones. Ian Flemming had one in his desk during the war, though no one knows how as he was never in the field, however he was a fan of it. The reason for the PPK was an early influential (to Flemming) reviewer complained it was too small and a 'womans gun' and insisted James Bond be equipped with something more suitable. Flemming chose the Walther as it was the standard German police/detective gun at the time (PPK is the initials of the German for Pocket Police Criminal, Polizeipistole Kriminal), considered very reliable and with a lot of stopping power while also being compact and concealable.

In 1956, however, after the publication of Diamonds Are Forever, a Glasgow-based firearms expert named Geoffrey Boothroyd wrote to Fleming:
“I have, by now, got rather fond of Mr. James Bond. I like most of the things about him, with the exception of his rather deplorable taste in firearms. In particular, I dislike a man who comes into contact with all sorts of formidable people using a .25 Beretta. This sort of gun is really a lady’s gun, and not a really nice lady at that. If Mr. Bond has to use a light gun he would be better off with a .22 rim fire; the lead bullet would cause more shocking effect than the jacketed type of the .25. May I suggest that Mr. Bond be armed with a revolver?”
Boothroyd and Fleming became friends. Boothroyd became 'Q' in the novel. The phase 'ladies gun' was use in the the novel Dr No. Bond is also issue Smith and Wesson .38 and Centennial Airweight. But revolvers were never his main gun. In fact, revolvers were never mention in the novels after Dr No.

Interesting. My father -a US soldier - “ obtained “ one of these weapons from the desk of a German colonel in the closing days of the war.

Doodlebud just reviewed this exact same pen. Montegrappa must be sending out these pens for the TH-cam penfluencers to review.

The original Casino Royale starred David Niven, Peter Sellars and Woody Allen among others. The Sean Connery film you reference is Dr.No.

The grooves on the side of the cap emulate the cocking serrations on the rear of a pistol slide. The long grooves in the clip look like those machined in the backstrap of many automatic pistols. I don't own a PPK, so I'm not 100% certain that they are present on this particular model. The knurling on the barrel makes the pen resemble a sound suppressor, so definitely something a "Double Naught" spy would need.

A great looking pen and packaging. The price is out of my reach, though.
    Happy New Year, David

Excellent review as always.. but the ones you review from your own collection are always more fun to listen in than the “loan” ones.
some interesting parts and shameful that for charging so much they did not even put a 18k nib and make it a piston filler. Cutting corners, overpricing pens and using penfluencers to sell is the norm these days.
Visconti does not cut these corners.

Wonderful review, as always-David. One problem is that our schools no longer teach about root words, prefixes and suffixes-in fact, grammar in general. It’s what Daniel Moynihan referred to as “defining deviancy downward.” A reasonably well educated person would know that lectern has as its root a word that means to read, and it’s the thing that a person places notes, references, etc., upon, so that they can read from them. A podium, on the other hand, has as its root a word that means “foot,” and it’s something that the speaker stands on. Imagine a low platform with two or three steps that you stand on to give your talk. If you’re lucky, there will be a lectern there that you can stand behind to give your talk.

Great review, as always, David! This pen is still on the expensive side but it does have many cool features related to the Bond franchise. The question is if you get enough bang for your buck? 😉

Great review. I’m not into themed pens, even if I could afford them. However, this one is nicely done and and not gimmicky like it’s more expensive cohort. I to think the cap end is the high light of the pen. Not sure though If I would enjoy looking down at the pons clipped in my pocket to find I was staring down a gun barrel. Thanks for doing this one and the research into Bond lore and Licensing the Bond Music.

It will be better if the cap has a lens and can be use like a real telescope, that like looking through a grooved rifle gun barrel. (Sorry Glock, polygonal rifling is not cool.)

A visually striking pen on it's own but I would have preferred it without any reference to a James Bond character or movie. Remove all the branding and just let the design stand on it's own.
