So in Medieval times, the rulers of these "Vassal States/Kingdoms" were themselves called "Vassals", like the actual Baron/Count/Duke/etc. In Classical Antiquity (Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, basically anything in from before 0 A.D.) these vassal states were called "Satrapies" and the ruler of the "Satrapy" was known as a "Satrap". A great example would be Alexander The Great's Macedonian Empire that stretched all the way from Greece to India, everywhere that wasn't directly under his, Alexander's, control were being governed by Satraps, usually his most trusted Generals, hence the whole "Successor Kingdoms/Successor Wars" after he died in Babylon from his wounds in battle in India without a designated Heir.
