      It was cool tech demo. I also prefer original visuals too. Check out DOOM Raytraced, that is opposite. Everything is dark in that.

    Remaster is vastly superior. Raytracing version is generic corporate bland ilk.
    Raytracing destroys the Q2 artistic design. There is absolutely NO need for RT unless it is accounted for in the original design of the games artistic vision.

    • @Rroff2
      @Rroff2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The RTX version is just a tech demo really - Quake 2 used a static baked version of ray tracing (radiosity) for lighting so it was easier in the early days of RTX to get it up and running in the game and the Quake 2 source code is fully released, compared to other games where they use lots of lighting tricks which aren't compatible with ray/path tracing and the source code isn't available.

  • @-CrimsoN-

    RTX is cool and all, but it completely feels like it destroys the aesthetic of Quake 2. The remastered version is wayyyy better and I was honestly skeptical about it at first, but it's basically a better version of a Quake II Source Port with way better visuals that don't detract from the original version. I love it. Before the Quake 2 Remaster, I just used a Source port and it was okay, but I don't feel inclined to use it anymore.

  • @MetalJody1990
    @MetalJody1990 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I like both versions. Remastered has enhancements that aren't related to graphics (more content, a compass, N64 levels, better SMG handling, HD videos, etc.). RTX has realistic lighting and an option to change the time-of-day to whatever you want. Sadly only the base game is supported, not the expansions or multiplayer. I mean, multiplayer works but some maps lack proper light sources. I hope that one day we'll get a new remaster that combines all the positives of Remastered and RTX. It is possible to have ray tracing without losing much of the original's mood.

    • @Witcher58
      @Witcher58 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I doubt they could ever make it work since the RTX version seems to use environment map textures which are tied to that specific graphics engine. On the other hand the only noticeable improvements in the so-called "remaster" are the 3D models and some of the lighting, as the devs decided they'd just leave the 1997 textures untouched in the name of faithfulness. I have yet to come across a more pointless notion in 2023, but I guess this is what happens when a publisher finds themselves desperately trying to squeeze the last drop of juice out of other people's work.

      @@Witcher58Absolutely agree. They did nothing. Same ugly AF visual FX, same ugly AF sound FX.
      Same shortage of music tracks, which are still the same poorly recorded and performed without
      any hint at music skills. The new lighting effects seem to be chosen at random, light sources are
      completely ignored when player passes them. Electronic equipment still does not count as a light
      source. Already in Heretic II this was not the case. Lighting there was splendid, compared to this joke.
      More so, the shadowing is also completely wrecked, in comparison to the original. A lot of areas
      appear arbitrarily too bright, lazily masked in haste with some strange fog. And that's the least of it.
      The original game with mods, running on a sourceport that has nice VFX and a versatile
      support for high quality custom music/SFX - is a thousand times better than this.

    Quake 2 Remastered is much more artistically coherent, and retains the theme of blood, rust, and decay. Also, had muzzle flashes and other things that Quake 2 needed for a long time so you no longer look like you're just waggling a gun at someone.
    Quake 2 RTX is shiny, but that's all it is. Shiny with fuck all for substance, and horrid redesigns of some of the guns purely for "ooh shiny" factor.
    I would like Quake 2 RTX more if the materials really showed off that rusty, decrepit look with grungy, carefully made PBR materials, but they didn't.

  • @sealsharp
    @sealsharp ปีที่แล้ว +67

    For me, the coherent artstyle of the remaster looks better than the mismatch of the RTX version.
    RTX versions of old games with HD textures tend to look like 2020ies indie games that pulled high quality PBR assets from the store, add in state of the art effects but no art direction that binds it together.

  • @outsideredge
    @outsideredge 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I like both, but overall I think remaster is more coherent. RTX shines best (literally and figuratively) in the opening levels where there is a lot of interplay between natural light and indoor environments and really lets you play with adjusting the time of day. This lessens a bit as you go on into deeper and darker areas of the game. Still, it's shiny and pops, and is a nice showcase for your graphics card. Remastered though seems much more grounded in the original's design language. You might not notice the changes unless you look for them, but things like glow maps on the screens, muzzle flashes, distance fog, do enhance the original look without changing it too much. And Call of the Machine really puts Remastered ahead. It is a wonderful add-on

    While it it appears visually better on the RTX version, remaking it with a modern engine would improve visuals a lot more. So what is RTX supposed to do anyway? Spice up old games? Waste of processing power and in reality it loses the atmosphere of the original which is supposed to be dark and grey and not shiny/ lit up environments.

      I feel the exact opposite. Environments in Quake 2 are not supposed to feel clean and futuristic, they should look rusty, worn out and dirty - like a decaying civilization that abandoned form in favor of function long ago. The shiny surfaces detract from that, imo
