Cool. I love convicts. They were the first egg layers to breed for me - in a community tank. I didn't even know they were the same species, as one was the pink variety. It was very exciting.
I share in the struggle when talking to friends about my fish, these are awesome fish. I recently got a couple pairs that I adopted from petco, again the only store I could find convicts at like you said in the video. The ones I have are about 2.5"-3" right now so I'm expecting them to try and breed any day.

I have a 100 gallon tank, with about 5 red jewels, a bumble bee, two small albino zebras, two venustus, one convict and one other one. ( I forget the name lol) but they're doing all fine ! And they get along great . My female convict tho. I feel like her color could be better. She's no where as dark as your female. Can the food and the water she's in affect her coloring ? I'm new to this fish hobby.
Can u mix black convicts with a community tank if u get baby black convicts cause that's what I just did with my twenty gallon long and they don't seem aggressive yet but they are also really little

I never breed a female and male from the same blood line and always go for a male that is 20 to 30% larger than the female. This gives a better success rate at pairing off in my experience. I also got my first pair of convicts from Petsmart. They have good fish sometimes but not to great with useful information! You’re better off asking google and doing research yourself IMO

if they are breeding convicts they are not friendly! I have a breeding couple that i tried in a community tank and they killed everything! Also, If you have plants the breeding convicts will up root them.
hey, I have 7 convicts and I see that all my females have eggs , so far only 2 have laid eggs , I'm sure I only have 3 males. , I wanna know If the males will spray all the other eggs when laid or will the eggs end up dying
convicts are very protective.. in order for the babies to be in one place the parents gather them in their mouths (without swallowing) and releases them in a secured place in the aquarium.

Hope Gill Do not separate them, they're very good parents. If you think they're eating the fry they are not they will suck them into their mouths and spit them back into the area they want.
+Danarius Trotter Have the convicts started breeding yet? My guess would be to keep just one male with the female. If you have two males, they may compete for the female. I have a pair that have bred twice already and now I have one tank with just their offspring. They just keep breeding! Good luck!
