  • This video was filmed during my trip to Chicago on the Easter long weekend. Chicago is one of the most bicycle friendly major cities in North America, and it was a pleasure getting to ride through it and share it in this video!
    The video begins at the intersection of W Division St and N Damen Ave in the Wicker Park neighbourhood of Chicago. From there we rode Southeast along Milwaukee Ave, South along Desplaines St, East along Harrison St and then North along Dearborn St. The video concluded near the intersection of N Dearborn St and W Kinzie Ave.
    I filmed this using a Contour Roam 2 camera mounted below the front rack on the Divvy bikeshare bike. I recorded the audio with a Panasonic voice recorder and earpiece microphone. I tracked my speed and heartrate using a Garmin eTrex 30 GPS unit, and wrote a basic program in Turing to display the numbers on the screen.
    Special thanks to my Dad for being the navigator and follow vehicle for this ride!
    I hope you enjoy this video. Please leave a comment and SUBSCRIBE!
    Thanks for watching!

    I think cycling is the best way to see a city. I have never cycled in the US but I have cycled around a few European cities and I love that on the bicycle you get a real feel for the place.

    Thanks for sharing, my home town. It's been so long since I've been back. It was nice seeing it in a biker's view. When I go back I will have to try to experience it with a bike.Those bikes are really heavy, I was in Austin, Texas last weekend and rode the bike share called "B-cycle". The downtown area in Austin have very steep hills and those 3 speed heavy bikes were hard on the hills but still very enjoyable way to view and enjoy a city.

    Glad you enjoyed Chicago. I cycle here just about every day, but strangely I've never cycled on any of the streets you went on in this video.

    Another enjoyable video, thanks for sharing, CJ. I was recently in Liverpool, England (to see a singer on Chicago's Drag City Records roster), but bottled out of using their bike share due to being completely unfamiliar with the roads and where i was wanting to go, so i'm impressed that you can do this and narrate at the same time (with a little help from your dad). I loved the "we're not from here" part.

    I stayed at the Chinatown Hotel near Cermak. It was $50 a night. The area was okay, but I was surprised that there were so few grocery stores. I had to search forever to find a store that sold fruit/vegetables.

      Great video of Chicago, I assume it was a Sunday morning as the streets were really quite, no traffic jams. Interesting passing Trump Tower, the least said about that the better.

    Good to see your dad on tour with you again. Does he still ride his bike to work every day also? I think you did more research on NYC before your tour there. Why didn't you stay in a hostel in NYC? Thanks for taking us along on this ride...

      +BernieOnBoss This was my first time staying in a Hostel. It worked well with a large family because it meant sharing a room with people I knew, but I'm not sure I would want to do it on a solo trip.

    Excellent video CJ. Half an hour between check in's seems a little restrictive, Especially if you are a tourist and want to spend the day exploring by bike. you would spend an awful lot of time looking for bike parks. I wonder if that is common to other cities or if it's unique to Chicago. Thanks for sharing.

      +Robbie Clay Thanks. I think 30 minutes is pretty standard. The Toronto Bike Share is the same, and so is the Citi Bike program in NYC. The concept is that you should only have a bike checked out of a station while it's actually being ridden. This discourages people from leaving them unlocked when they aren't in use, and leaves the maximum number of bikes available to the users. Bike shares are mostly intended for people taking short trips from A to B around the city, and less for pleasure riding. If we were wanting to spend the whole day riding, we could have probably rented a bike from a bike shop instead.

      +cjhoyle Thanks CJ. That makes perfect sense now you have explained it!!!

      +cjhoyle I agree that 30 minutes is standard in all the bike sharing cities I am aware of. It certainly is the same for DC Bikeshare (Washington DC). Even the bikes are the same; only the colors are different. There are several places in each city where bicycles can be rented for several hours at a time or all day, for reasonable rates.

      Divvy recently changed this. The 24 hour pass is now $15 BUT you get unlimited 3 hour rides. It's called the Explorer Pass www.divvybikes.com/pricing/explorer-pass

    Can you tell us where you get your turing compiler? Does it have an IDE or just a plain old notepad? and if you can refer to a basic hello world page, that would be awesome

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eyob Woldemichael I believe the software publisher has released the compiler for free download now. It's the language that I first learned to program in when I was in high school. The only reason I chose to use it for this is because it makes graphics display really easy. In the past I've considered making a video showing how I add the numbers into the videos, and I might still do it if there is interest.

    • @EyobWoldemichael
      @EyobWoldemichael 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +cjhoyle I am a programmer by profession and I was thinking to export the Garmin data and use a captioning API and embed it on the video. That was before I expanded the "Read more" and saw yours. Is it easier to do it your way?

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eyob Woldemichael I am not a professional programmer and I would not describe my method of displaying the numbers as easy. The program I wrote in Turing simply displays an output window which has white numbers on a black background. The numbers are read sequentially from a text file that I have exported from Garmin. I then use a screen recorder to record the output of my program and overlay it onto my riding footage using my video editor.
