This makes so much sense now. I hired a house cleaner earlier this year because I was overwhelmed with my household. The apartment was a mess. However I was never satisfied when she was done because to me it was still a mess. I had expected her to do what I couldn't do, namely tidy up more so than just cleaning. I thought I would show her were everything belonged once and then she would do that so I didn't have to think about it anymore. I discontinued the service after half a year because it wasn't what I needed. Thanks for pointing this out. Until now I was dissatisfied with her work but apparently it was my expectations that were unreasonable. All the best to you!

Yeah, I actually have a friend who cleans our house sometimes (she started as our nanny, we became friends, and she also helps my with cleaning (for pay)). Because we have a relationship, she was able to tell me that I needed to tidy up before she came. She’s cleaning, not tidying for us. And that way I’m not paying her for the time it takes to “move” as much stuff around while she cleans!

@@violingirl1349I'm so glad you pointed this out! I own a small cleaning business, and I always let clients know that it will take longer if they haven't tidied first. This is actually a strategy I use to clean my house sometimes. In my mind I call it a cosmetic clean. I don’t put stuff away, I just tidy to make it look cosmetically appealing, even if that means certain stuff had to be shoved here or there where it doesn’t necessarily belong. Then I actually get something done instead of giving up!

Classic example of what my mom does as a cleaner. When I was a kid she had to take me with her bc there was no one else to watch me and I would help her out by dusting doors and window frames around when I was 8. I learned how to clean well bc of her and as I got older I started having bigger responsibilities like cleaning whole bathrooms on my own for a client and half bathrooms as well, also vacuuming basements and such. It was only until I got my own minimum wage job that I stopped going with her bc I wanted to get paid more lol
I still miss those moments tho
Especially after a long day and we choose what to eat after
    Whether I was 8 or 15

With my adhd brain this is a STRUGGLE. But what I do for when I need to clean is that I prime myself to go into autopilot and tell my brain “no” whenever I drift off from the task. Podcast/music helps me.
This video reminds me of what I do sometimes when there’s a lot I still have to.. I’ll just tell myself the goal today is to CLEAN. The goal tomorrow will be to ORGANIZE. I’ll dedicate the time to one goal. If I just tell myself I’m doing l the kitchen I’ll get distracted. But if I tell myself I’m getting the kitchen cleaned up then I’ll keep the tasks related to cleaning and not organizing. Otherwise something that should take an hour will take a week.
Just telling yourself to “clean it it’s your friends house” would definitely help stay focused! Thank you for this

I’ve been a residential cleaner for over 3 years and this is super true, it’s very helpful when clients pick things up before their appointment but since we’re all super busy, that doesn’t always happen. You quickly become a pro at organized chaos, just putting things together that seem to go together but not putting things away unless I know exactly where it goes or the client is there to ask. Cool to see someone explain this! I feel like people often think you’re cheating them or not cleaning thoroughly but there isn’t much to do about personal stuff laying around.

As a former Cleaner, I disagree, if you're hired to Clean, that means to CLEAN. ie:: The removal of dirt, dust, grime, bacteria etc from Surfaces, maybe windows if agreed to., doing laundry also a separate item to be agreed to or not.
Cleaner is meant to Clean Surfaces. NOT spend Their /Your Time Tidying up Other Peoples Personal Belongings First so to be able to clean the surfaces in the home. That job requires a Maid Service & is more $ because it's double the work of just Cleaning.
If you're doing Full Maid Serice for Cleaning rate, you're Under valuing Your Time.

My point, as I said is if She was hired to CLEAN then she needs them to pick their crap up before she comes to clean, otherwise, if she has to pick their crap up, she is doing Work She wasn't hired and more importantly isn't being Paid to Do.
That is the Client taking Advantage as well as being generally disrespectful, getting Service - ** HER TIME**
      - for FREE ! Not just her time either, Cleaning is physical labor, everytime she has to bend or reach to pick clothes etc. up is one more movement toward repetitive stress injury and worn out knees and joints.
.... Why do that for FREE?
Idk, maybe you enjoy spending your time working for free, but that's usually called Volunteering, personally, my Volunteer hours go elsewhere, somewhere useful and needed other than to people who can't clean their own home.
Her time is not free, it's as valuable to her as yours is to you, and mine is to me.

I love this explanation. When I was 21 I could clean a Bed and Breakfast room in no time. Then go home and look at my room and be at a total loss. Thought I was just lazy or something. No. At a B&B or hotel it's usually a pleasant room with the minimum necessary to be comfortable for a few days. I was not responsible for a closet of each guest's clothes, a clothes dresser, memorabilia, etc. I could just make the bed, clean, change towels, and leave. At home...it's tidying, organizing, inventory management, *and* cleaning. It's not impossible, just a different mindset. That's why I set fun challenges for myself, have an energizing song playlist, and never beat myself up for not getting everything done on my insane to do lists. I am not 21 anymore and have a husband and 2 kids to account for in laundry and organizing. 😆

I was a house cleaner when I was in college. Most people were pretty neat already & having us in at least once a week made it super easy as well, the big first clean was always the hardest & most time consuming. Just maintaining a consistent schedule can cut down on time spent. Also yes to the not organizing other people's things being a huge factor. We had one guys house who kept it pretty minimal except for one bedroom that he stored everything all in large random piles. We cleaned the carpet & room around the piles.

Tip about alcohol: 70% is better for sanitizing than 90%.
I used to think that higher concentrations of alcohol were better for killing bacteria (because more alcohol = stronger cleaning power right?) but 90% isopropyl alcohol evaporates much faster than 70% so it doesn’t sit on surfaces long enough to really kill bacteria.

As a former house cleaner, I agree with the others. Do not feel embarrassed! Cleaners do a lot of different types of jobs… for instance, my first employer cleaned strip clubs, so therefore I had to clean strip clubs. You can only imagine the gross stuff I’ve seen, so cleaning someones home is a million times better, no matter what.
I never threw away anything that wasn’t already in the garbage, like receipts or paper bags that I believed were trash. They would get folded and placed neatly somewhere close to where I found them. Cleaners never know what someone else considers trash so we usually don’t throw it away unless you tell us. Those paper bags and receipts could be someone’s child’s art project supplies for all we know, so it’s better safe than sorry.

I enjoyed every minute of it! I love to clean kitchens and bathrooms. I don’t clean private homes anymore, however, I am now a custodian on a school campus. I clean the IT building, (two bathrooms & 3classrooms) the PE gym and the competition gym. There are 11 bathrooms (about 33 toilets), 4 big locker rooms, and the stadium seating…not to mention mopping both gyms by hand ! It can be challenging at times, that is what I love about it!

Taking pictures is a helpful tip. When I was cleaning homes I would take a picture of for example where they had everything placed in their bathroom counters or in the corners of the tub area so that after I cleaned it I could put it back like they had it. And although it may be a little time-consuming it was worrisome to me that they would complain that their stuff had been moved or that I had reorganized their belongings. In a situation like stuff on the counter, stuff on the table. Maybe it's not so imperative to worry about putting everything back in the exact same spot but if you feel it's an issue this is also a good tip. Take a picture first refer back to the picture - put everything back where they had it.

You can't take photos without the clients permission. It's their property and you must ask a general question about how they feel about taking photos before you do. And if it's taking a lot of your time away from cleaning , I don't suggest doing it. If you can't be trustworthy about returning things to where you found them, tell the client you can't. Maybe they'll do the Tidy before you get there. Just my thoughts. Thanks for sharing.

    • @crystalparker2542
      @crystalparker2542 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hey, we are all super busy these days with this or that, so what I suggest is doing exactly as she does in the video sometimes. Then either organize after or do that on certain days or times. Keeping the two separate helps. That way you aren't trying to clean and organize at the same time. There are times it makes sense to do both. If I am going to organize a cabinet, or the fridge, then I'll be taking most everything out, so it only makes sense to wipe them while I'm there. But imo, as far as daily cleaning goes, many times it just has to be like she just did in this video. Then maybe another time I can organize, or at least do what she does, then organize or put away the small piles after. When one tries to do both at the same time, it gets overwhelming and often, neither gets done. I struggled with this for a long time. Another thing I do is multipurpose cleaners. Something that disinfects, but also smells great. That helps. Lastly, go easy on yourself. Again, we are all super busy and it's not easy, so it's ok if your home looks like people actually live there. Don't be hard on yourself.

That’s ridiculous indeed! As a former house cleaner, the fanciest thing I’d do is fold the toilet paper, it took me less than 5 seconds and I was taught it was a way to communicate that we were actually present and finished cleaning that bathroom. There were so many homes where I could tell someone cleaned up before we came in (usually because they felt embarrassed and didn’t want us to know they were “dirty”) so sometimes all I could do was wipe down surfaces and hope it felt cleaner than before, but not actually cleaning and just folding flowers of tissue is a waste of time and your money. The least they could have done is wipe things down, sweep, mop, and vacuum… I don’t think that’s too hard for anyone to do. I’m glad you finally found someone who knows what they’re doing 😊

This is spot on. I cleaned homes for 9 years. You do exactly what you did in this video. In most cases, the homes were already organized, so it was extra easy. I did do sheets and towels in certain homes. ❤

She's EXACTLY right! I've been a high end professional cleaner myself.

That actually makes a lot of sense. If I was a house cleaner I wouldn’t want to do extra work with no extra payment lol. You want me to organize your home office? Hire a home organizer! You want the lawn done? Hire a lawn service company! I ain’t doing no extra services without that extra compensation. When it’s your own home you WANT to do these extra things because it’s YOUR OWN home. So it makes sense that it takes extra time to clean your own home when you think about all these different things that you aren’t doing at a clients home like lawn care, organizing, home repairs, laundry, decorating etc. I never realized that until now. I was so amazed at these hours cleaner videos on TikTok and TH-cam where it seemed like they cleaned an entire house faster than I could clean my bed room lol.

Such a good point. In addition, once I put things away and organize, it always sidetracks me to do other things, like going through and purging items, or cleaning out areas I hadn’t planned to!

This is absolutely the best thing I could have watched today. Thank you. Now I will separate the two - cleaning and organising. Are there any other ways you can slice cleaning you think, so that it doesn’t take so long?

When I cleaned other people's houses, I told my clients upfront that they needed to pick up the clutter before I came if they wanted a clean house. They soon learned that they liked the house looking clean and free of clutter, and that encouraged them to keep it that way. A win-win situation for both of us!

One of the best messages I am getting is that it is sooo much easier to clean surfaces than organize STUFF. when I manage to tidy up everyday and put things right where they belong the cleaning part is actually a breeze. It’s the organizing and having too much stuff - and not keeping up with daily upkeep- that makes the house messy first and then not clean ( can’t clean the surfaces bc there is your stuff all over). Sorry if this is obvious to you guys but I’m high IQ and neurospicy .. a sidetracked home executive as Flylady says- and the mundane aspect of keeping a house was always a waste of time to me and a struggle to face.. now I changed my mode after reading and watching lots of videos and seminars.. taking care of my home is taking care of me :)
For all those struggling to keep order at home I suggest starting with Flylady. She changed my life and now it all takes 15 minutes a day. Once you get there upkeep is a breeze. You can do it

I have MAD respect for cleaners. They are the one's who put society back on their feet. They deserve more resoect than any other profession. IMO.

I would also add that you are not attached or invested in the items in your client's home so it is quick for you to clean your client's house. When it is your own house you are attached to the items and don't want to throw things out. For example, I always wonder how I can reuse something when I should be tossing or giving away the item. I say, I may need that in the future, LOL!

My grandma works as a cleaning lady in NY. She has gone through so much stuff, specially racism, but she does a good job, that’s why she keeps getting clients. She is a master.

It makes perfect sense, you definitely hit the nail on the head 🌟 Cleaning is one task, organizing is another, you can do them at the same time, but it might not be the most efficient use of time!!!

When my grandmother was alive, I would go with her to clean homes as a teenager. So I learned this early. Thanks for all that you and the housekeepers of the world do! #muchrespect
