My litter box placement has changed a lot over the last year and a half as I went from 3 cats to 1. When I had 3 cats, I had 4 litter boxes all on one floor (apartment) - 1 in my office, 1 in my bedroom, 1 in the spare bedroom, and 1 in the storage room (no washer or dryer there). They were all used by all cats with some preferences. When I lost the first cat, I waited a couple of months and noticed that the ones in my office and bedroom weren't used much. I removed the one in the office, which was nice because I didn't have a cat occasionally digging in the litter anymore while I was in Zoom. 😂 I waited another month and the one in my bedroom still wasn't used much, so I moved it to the storage room with the box that was the most heavily used. It started getting used regularly, much more often than before. When I lost my elderly kitty in the spring, I tried 1 box in the storage room and 1 in the spare bedroom but the one in the bedroom got used so rarely that I moved it back to the storage room. So, now I have 2 boxes near each other in the same room and they both get used regularly. Not what I would have expected.
The two boxes in the storage room will be perceived as a single toileting area by your cats. That's fine if they get along. If they feel competitive, it can create problems. It can still help relieve stress to have another toileting area in your home even if it's rarely used.
@@KittyHelpDesk I only have one cat right now, so there's no competition. If I still had more than one cat, I'd definitely put another box elsewhere. I just thought it was interesting that she ended up only using the 2 litter boxes in the 1 toileting area instead of ones that were in separate areas even when there were 3 in total.
