  • Hatched on 10th May 2007, two peregrine falcons chicks are now feeding fine. This is only about half of the full sequence we filmed. What happened next was that the left-hand chick continued to be fed for a while until it was totally gorged. It then flopped, exhausted, over its sibling's shoulder who was then fed until it, too, seemed replete. However the remaiing two eggs you see in the picture never did hatch. So we now have just two young this year on the tower of Derby Cathedral in England.

Yes - as I said in the description, both chicks eventually fed perfectly well and grew up to fly over the skies of Derby city before leaving home in the autumn.

It's very hard to say what species of prey this is. It's small and black, so probably a blackbird, or maybe a starling. We now have over 50 prey species recorded in Derby - from swift to ruddy duck.

Not all birds gather nesting materials; peregrines prefer to scrape out shallow depressions in loose soil/gravel (if nesting on a cliff or ledge).

Why wasn't she feeding the other baby that's mean the chick was crying and get she didn't feed him

This was only part of a much longer feeding sequence. Once the first chick was gorged, the second chick got fed shortly afterwards. Unlike in species such as owls, where staggered hatching leads to chicks of different sizes, and where biggest bird gets the 'lion's share' of the food, in peregrines there is delayed incubation until all the eggs are laid. This leads to hatching at the same time (sometimes within hours of each other). All the chicks are then the same size, and all get fed equally attentively. Thanks for watching. (I'm afraid that as at spring 2019 our live webcams are not available, but we are working on getting them back online for later in the year)

It's an example of a mother giving all her resources to one offspring instead of sharing between two in order to maximise her fitness- this way, she will gain more grandchildren should the one offspring she has given all her resources to survive.
