    Really well explained process and I like your "random information" like "almost every motor out there is 24volts". AND... you keep the fluff words to a minimum. THANKS, DAN! WELL DONE!

    Wrap some medium motor grade wet and dry sandpaper around the armature where the brushes run ! (use dry ) so you can bed brushes into the right shape Never put them in without bedding them to the armature as you will get arcing due to the high amperage if there not seated correctly

    I was able to work on my Jazzy HD motors and gearboxes and now I will clean them up from carbon from the brushes. and the Gear Boxes need grease replaced and gear boxes flushed out.
    Then I should have a good backup pair.
    Thanks for the help.
    Also thought on bolts with
    super locktite on them.
    Try getting a 450 watt solder iron and heat the bolt head up really good and the lock tight stuff should not hold so tight.
    It should not take to long to do it on the short bolts. Long bolts that is a different thing. you could heating the other ends of the long bolts. Hope this helps.

    Dan that's a great video, I was saying WOW at most every step. Have never seen the inside of a motor or had it explained before either so this was really eye opening for me. I love seeing stuff like this! Man you really had this set up too..what with a brand new table and all that, very fancy! Used to love watching my step dad doing stuff like this on his cars and such, every once in awhile he'd let me get in there and help him, but I had no idea what I was doing, I'd just follow his instructions, but it was so fascinating to me. Always was a tomboy, lol. Home Ec classes bored me, I instead signed up for wood shop, lol. And super glad to know what's making that infernal clicking noise on my chair, hate that, can't even sneak up on anyone :(

      I used to own an Invacare Storm 4 X-plore with Tru-Track motors that was brushless and didn't make a clicking with the application of the holding brake.

    Got the 7F00 bad wire error code for M1 on my daughter's Permobil M3 along with a 1505 M1 motor brake error, so now I'm armed with just enough knowledge to shred the brake and wiring for her chair! Ha! I just hope that it's the microswitch needing cleaning or something like that for the brake or a frayed wire or something I can fix or easily source locally. Anyway, so helpful your superlative videos are! Thank you so very much!

    • @TotallyNormal-

      double check the connections on the main controller under the back cover on chair.. sometimes they wiggle loose - the hardshell connectors dont always get plugged in all the way :^)
      also sometimes some crud can get into the brake mechanism.. i like to grab the brake/neutral levers and flip them 15-20 times like you're ANGRY at them! it can help knock dirt and stuff loose in there
      just be careful with the plastics.. on the M-series chairs they like to try and escape sometimes!

    Great video!!! You saved me a lot of time, since I am rebuilding, trying to modify, my Quickie Groove with strong&fast brushless motors (prefarebly of the same (German AMT) brand as you showed?). Lead-acid batteries will have to become lithium-ion in my beter Groove. Permobile should give you a modern/experimental future model to test, take apart and make videos of, like every creative wheelchair user should do to understand how new 'leggs' work and function. It remains hard to explain why innovations are kept out of wheelchair manufactoring (like omni wheels on indoor chairs). I would love to see you climb mountains!
    Keep up the good work and thanks again. Wolter (Haren, The Netherlands). P.S. Please don't feel any pressure to make videos, your are doing great, your fun and playing the way you do now gives positive energy to many!

    i wouldn't have guessed it would have a plastic gear. All the motors i have use a brass gear the worm runs onto. I love using wheelchair motors they are super high quality. ive made 2 rc lawnmowers with them and just finished retrofitting a mini bulldozer to run on battery.... i wish everything was built as nice as these motors

    I had to watch this video again. you really seem to have an endless pool of knowledge. I might be able to pull that apart...but I'm not sure it would still function when I was done hahaha. I've been kind of lucky with stuff like that (broken screws, crossed threads, etc). Hand the broken item off to a machinist and it comes back with a short story....oh, no problem, I just used an easy-out . or I just drilled out the screw and chased the threads with a 10-24 tap.... Then I think back to shop class in high school and my inside voice says "YEAH RITE !!! it was just that easy".

    • @TotallyNormal-
      @TotallyNormal-  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea - RE the broken bolts.. apparently they intentionally use soft metal "screws" and PERMANENT thread locker to mate the motor to gearbox. provides a shear point, or planned failure mode - kinda like breaking a U-joint in your truck, instead of shearing off the input shaft on the rear differential haha.
      permo peeps said -"Don't expect to take a motor off of a gearbox without breaking bolts!"

  • @jancloddlafront9185

    4:34 take all screws out by heating up de metal, redrill the others, save the motor.

    • @TotallyNormal-
      @TotallyNormal-  ปีที่แล้ว

      normally that's what could be done.. but these motors are pretty sensitive to heat. there's no way to use a torch, or otherwise without setting fire to/melting the nearby components. the screws are intended to break for uninstallation. if it was going to be re-used, the broken parts can be pulled out, and threads cleaned up. this motor has bad windings however. that why i used it for this video :^)

      @TotallyNormal-  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i actually made a trike conversion thing a while back.. BUT i used bicycle chains to drive it, and the gear ratios i picked, the chain couldn't hold up to the torque haha! i think hub motors are the way to go! use one in the front wheel, and youre done!

    • @nathanbuskell
      @nathanbuskell ปีที่แล้ว

      I made an electric 2 wheel bicycle when i was younger using a wheelchair motor. Drove the pedals with the motor so I could use the gear ratios. Bug mistake. Nearly broke my leg when the motor kicked the pedal around and hit my ankle! Chain had slipped loose of the back end and the motor suddenly gained a lot of speed, couldnt move quick enough. Whatever you do, be careful!

    The battery of the chair needs to be shipped quickly and a new one. I do not know where the problem is. One of them said that it is possible that there is a short circuit that causes a decrease in the battery charge. It does not receive electricity for more than one and a half hours. The chair moves approximately 1 kilometer

    I am trying to revive a Jazzy 1121 chair. it keeps making a clicking noise whenever i hit the 70 amp controller, just clicks and doesn't move at all. I noticed the underside of both motors are covered in oil. Installed new batteries and cleaned male and female 9 pin connectors. Connectors in female side of the 9 pin connector, have proper amount of physical resistance. I removed the motor/gearbox assembly. It was 102 degrees in my workspace and full humidity. I've had enough for today. I may get rid of the 9 pin connector and just hard wire it, thus bypassing rusty, corroded, unseen areas. I'm going to rehydrate and sleep on it and make a decision tomorrow.

    A lot of the engineering plastics are self lubricating and exceptionally strong, often stronger weight for strength than many metals. They should last the lifetime of the motor.

      Hey man, if youre still interested, just remove the motor lock, and the motor itself runs off 24v. I would recommend a couple of small UPS batteries wired in series for 24v, use the original tire as friction against the ground, and then you run the voltage red wire to +24v black wire to -0 v to go one direction, and just reverse the 2 wires to go the other direction. If you want a controller, thats a bigger topic.

    Good video. At least I know where the oil leak will most likely be coming from on my Puma 40 but unfortunately I still haven't found the answer as to why my Salsa M2 brakes sharply (as is required) but my new Q500M rolls for a while before stopping which makes using it in central London very problematic.

    • @TotallyNormal-
      @TotallyNormal-  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      there's a setting in the programming called 'forward deceleration' that should help... requires a handheld programmer to change though... OR is it coming almost to a stop, then there's a delay before the brakes actually click on?

    • @marcoteves685
      @marcoteves685 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TotallyNormal- The holding or parking brakes (as shown in the video) engage normally once the chair finally comes to a rest. I suspected that the problem could be in the programming but I have no idea how to even get hold of a wheelchair programmer, let alone how to do it as I usually limit myself to mechanical issues only. I once had a technician make some adjustments to the VR2 ECU on my old Salsa and he did it through a program on his PC; although I would imagine 'end users' aren't trusted enough to do it themselves. I once had an Invacare Storm 4 X-plore with Tru-Track motors, an amazing wheelchair, however, Invacare in the UK refuse to supply parts outside of their dealer network and dealers, of course, refuse to sell parts without service.
      Thanks for your reply, at least I have a name for the matter now, forward deceleration, I'll try to figure out how to go about altering the settings. Thanks again.

    • @TotallyNormal-
      @TotallyNormal-  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think the Q500m has R-net controls..? thats the closest setting to it..BUT the VR2 stuff has a specific setting for the time before applying the brakes.. R-Net however doesn't have a specific delay setting for 'holding brake' engagement...does your chair slow down fairly gradually when ya let go of the joystick? the brake engagement is baked into the setting for deceleration.. it slows the chair with the motors, then after ya get close to stopping it clamps them on. (pretty sure it uses current monitoring to determine when you're actually stopped) so i think making it 'stop faster - or decelerate faster' should net the same end result of them turning on sooner.

    • @marcoteves685
      @marcoteves685 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TotallyNormal- The problem isn't the time taken for the holding brakes to be applied but the length of time it takes for the chair to decelerate and come to a stop after the joystick is released. On the Salsa it's fairly quick to slow down and stop upon release of the joystick (and then the holding brakes click on), of course, if I put the joystick in reverse (on the Salsa) it comes to a halt even quicker, thereby avoiding collisions with pedestrians or getting squashed by cycling extremists. But on the Q500M even after the joystick is released it rolls to a halt quite slowly; putting the joystick into reverse makes no difference and it still continues to roll for 3 to 4 feet, then once it stops the holding brakes come on. What I want to do is reduce the time it takes for the chair to initially stop.
      Incidentally, the Q500M is available with VR2 or R-NET, I don't know which my chair has but I suspect that it's the VR2 as this chair appears to have 2 pole motors although Sunrise claims to supply it with 4 pole motors. I'm basing this on my newly acquired knowledge from the video that two brushes is two pole and the Sunrise website shows a Q500M with motors having four brushes, two more than mine!
      I'll take a look tomorrow to see exactly which controller has been fitted.

    • @TotallyNormal-
      @TotallyNormal-  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ah! ok then yes - the deceleration setting is what ya need then! make sure that they change the setting for forward AND reverse! 2 separate settings! yea that's not safe!! also does the E-stop mode work on the chair? if you need to slow down quickly, pulling joystick in the opposite direction briefly activates a higher power braking mode.. (dont worry its not bad for the motors).. its actually a secondary setting called "hard braking rate"

    Of course that gear is made from plastic. Just not a cheap plastic (one would hope). Plastic is simply "a synthetic material made from a wide range of organic polymers such as polyethylene, PVC, nylon, etc., that can be molded into shape while soft and then set into a rigid or slightly elastic form." Thanks for making that video.

    ok, so they're using an O ring to seal up the gear box instead of a gasket? Cuz I saw that cast aluminum and thought to myself, well they have the bottom is metal and the top is metal and it's got gear oil in there so they're probably using a gasket between them but I didn't see one when Dan opened it up....Interesting....Question though, how do you know how much gear oil to put back in there once you've opened it up? Just wondering...

    • @TotallyNormal-
      @TotallyNormal-  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can see the O-ring flush mounted into the top half of the lid.
      thats easy! dont spill it and ya wont have to put any back in! LOL
      seriously though.. usually 1/3 to just under 1/2 full is how most gearboxes need to be

    Nice video! First, between a 6 and and an 8 (or 6.5/8.5) motor package on most chairs - What's the difference, usually? Motor? Gearbox? Both? Second, how hard would it be to mod the 6.5 motors into the 8.5 MPH package, unofficially? I've seen Burgerman's 15 MPH BM3 custom chair, but that's just too much, especially since I'm no engineer, nor do we in the US get lump sum amounts like him to buy/build our own chairs.

    • @TotallyNormal-
      @TotallyNormal-  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey hey! its *usually * the gearboxes that are different.. ive chatted with at least one person that's swapped gearboxes over from a different motor set.. haven't tried it myself at this point. in the case of the older quantums, (6000z) the motors also appear to be different as well as the gearboxes. but larger tires.. thatll get ya more speed! - of course causes other problems.. like the geometry of the front and rear castor wheels.. and the suspension getting all weird. but yea,.. once you get over 7.5 or 8 mph.. its a whole different world!

    • @SweetBearCub
      @SweetBearCub 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Such mods are beyond me at the moment, as I don't even have a spare chair, but it's nice to know. Also, I wouldn't take Quantum's gear as much of an example on anything, their chairs are cheap crap. I can't name anyone I know that's specifically chosen their chairs, especially the higher end models, and been happy with the quality.

    Any idea why wheelchair motors (particularly the faster ones - 6mph plus) sometimes bump or judder?

    • @nathanbuskell
      @nathanbuskell ปีที่แล้ว

      It can happen as wheelchair motors get older. The brushes he showed are a wearing item and get shorter over time. When they get short enough the spring does not push them hard enough against the armature, and they can bounce which makes the motor lose power, and therefore speed.

      programming is the only thing - but it wont usually get ya much.. typically its mechanical limitations that set the top speed. ...bigger diameter tires maybe.. but then that kinda throws off the geometry of the chair.. aftermarket motor controllers.. but that's a whole big deal.. if the brand / model of chair has a high speed motor option.. sometimes ya can find used high speed motors on ebay. the difference is the gearing typically.

      i looked at the sticker on the side of the brake modules, and also you need to determine the voltage they operate on (some are 12volts and others 24v - usually also printed somewhere on the sticker) they can be different voltage between models on the same brand as well.. then you measure the resistance of the coils, do some math, and you have your resistor values! i dont remember the equation right off.. BUT they WILL get hot! i mounted mine on a metal plate with a cooling fan... send me a DM on twitter and i'll see if i can dig up the details. ya can also use the email submission form on the website (brokenwheelchairs.com) replies will take a bit though.. im in the middle of moving

Never had any problem with the leg lift, the seat elevator, or the back going down. Usually if it stops working during the day by the next morning it works again. It's getting more often that it doesn't work. Any thoughts on what might be my problem? Thanks in advance

      do any red lights flash on the seating buttons when it happens? also have you tried using the mode button on joystick, and operating the seat functions via the joystick directly to see if it works that way?

    • @scottfowler2902
      @scottfowler2902 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      On this chair everything works off the joystick. There's a on/off switch and another switch you push when you want to adjust the seat. When you hit the switch for the seat functions you move the joystick sideways to get the the seat function you want then move the joystick forward or backwards to adjust the seat. When the recline quits working if I hold the joystick sideways trying to get it to work the lights will start blinking. When I move the joystick back to the center position the lights stop blinking.

      Hey there, i did a mod for the invacare motor locks when they switched to a big metal disc with a lever on it probably 5 years ago? I removed the brake release lever and 3d printed a plastic one. This eliminated over 1/2 of the noise. The lever itself was acting as a sound amplifier. Making it out of plastic deadened the sound.
