  • In this episode, I take a trip to the city of Norwich and embark on a subterranean adventure beneath a rather unassuming former shoe-shop-turned-café on one of the City's bustling streets.

    This is really good Chris, I spent my happy student days in Norwich (Norwich School of Art) in the late 70s, and regard Norwich and Norfolk as my spiritual home. Great stuff !

    I’ve lived in Norwich all my life and never heard of this before 😑 I’ve heard of the 100s of miles of networked tunnels that once even had colourful street names, especially near Earlham road etc.

      A lady that works at the town hall in Norwich told me as well as the connecting tunnel between the town hall and the castle, there’s also one that connects the Guild Hall to the Cathedral on Earlham Road!

    Thanks Chris, we've been hoping to take a tour down here for a while now but have yet to find the time so it was nice to come across your video with lots of information about it. Thanks and keep up the good work 👍

    Also there’s a tunnel that links the cathedral to the castle and then to Guildhall.

    And the legend of a giant king who is at the bottom of a deep hole in the castle who is surrounded by his treasures and there is a prophecy about the one who will become king of the world once he finds him.

    I see 2 people talking in a basement! Hardly an underground street!

      You see 2 people talking in a basement... However, if you listen to the backstory, it was once not a basement at all- what you see was once a yard at street level and open to the air, which was later built over.

    Opie Street was called Gropekuntelane.

    • @jumparoundjon
      @jumparoundjon ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe Gropekuntlane was St Andrews Hill, not Opie Street. But as they are very close to one another, it’s possible Gropekuntlane could have included both modern streets in Medieval and Early Modern times.

    why does this look like it was made in the 1800s

    • @ChrisRichmond
      @ChrisRichmond  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Parts of it probably were- it's a bit of a mix of architectural styles and wasn't all constructed at the same time.
