  • Anaesthesia as a career . The untold truth.
    Intro:
How does it feel if your stuck in a job which your not capable of doing because of your personality. It feels suffocating and at the end of it , you will end up not enjoying your life.
Applying the same logic to anaesthesia, only some personalities would love anaesthesia. We are going to discuss what are the character traits who live anesthesia. If your not having those qualities,it might be risky to take up anesthesia as a career.
    Questions:
    1. Are you having those character traits which make you live the branch of anesthesiology
    2. Are you aware of the dark side or the limitations of the branch
    3. Are you aware of the benefits of being an anesthesiologist?
    Title:
Who should take up anesthesia as career?
    Part 1:
    Understanding what is Anesthesia?
Anesthesiology is a branch dealing with the providing unconsciousness to the patient during surgery.
I wouldn’t be doing this video if it’s so simple.
    Part 2 :
    Problems while providing unconsciousness
While administration of the anaesthesia , patient might develop certain complications like fall in the blood pressure, bleeding which requires massive transfusion, and difficult airway scenario can be there where patients saturation drops and all these events can be dealt but they need a different personality.
    Part 3:
Character traits required for becoming a good anaesthesiologist:
    1. Being calm and composed during crisis
    2. Leader ship during the crisis.
    3. Delegation of work in crisis
    4. Tech savvy
    5. Should be ok with not being famous among public
    6. Obsession is mandatory
    7. Attention to detail.
    8. Smart.
    Part 4:
    Advantages of branch:
    1. Work life balance
    2. Fixed timing
    3. Switch off
    4. Plan your life
    5. Anywhere in the world
    6. No patient base required
    7. Good salary at early part of career
    Part 5:
    Darker side:
    1. Salary scale will reach plateau
    2. Medico legal
    3. Patient doesn’t recognise your efforts nor the management.
    4. Your dependant on the hospital or surgeon for cases, it’s not a revenue generation.
    5. Early burnout and high suicide rates.
    6. Addiction liability.
    7. Experience might not matter after certain years of anaesthesia practice.
    8. Supply demand mismatch.
    9. Infrastructure lacking.
    10. Capex not allocated well compared to other revenue generation departments.
    11. Corporate is seeing quantity.
    Conclusion:
If you got a feeling that anesthesiology is complicated, it’s true. Its not for Everyone, but if you have the characters which I told, you will love the branch and you will succeed.

You are right. It is leadership which should the most important trait in an Anesthesiologist. And it is leadership qualities which should be taught & honed with equal emphasis along with the science. Right from the interaction with the patient and the family in the PAC to intraop management to postoperative care or pain management Anesthesiologists today play the role of a leader being not only an astute clinician, but also knowledgeable & dependendable person on whom the very life of the patient depends. Present day Surgeons and even the Hospital management recognize & respect the vital role of such a leader. It is to this level all of us must elevate ourselves. Surgery is teamwork & I believe the present day surgical experience needs 2 Captains-one for the cutting part and the other for the entire non cutting part!😀

Dr, in my country intensive care specialists came out of anaesthesia and the two specialities diverged in 2000, intensive care is what anaesthesiasts essentially do with their patients when they are unconscious in surgery. Was this the case in India as well? I am very surprised by leadership being such an important trait in an anaesthesiast (which you both agree with) because it seems incongruous with never famous. Finally what reason would a manipulative person have to become an anaesthesiast? My gut tells me that manipulative people are generally drawn towards psychiatry, obgyn, neurology and general medicine, so how do as a writer harmonise these contradictions?

Seems anesthesia is very under appreciated as a medical specialty. After learning about the history of anesthesia and watching your video it makes me feel many hospitals and medical facilities are shooting themselves in the foot by not supporting innovation, tools and invention in this field. It would help make surgery and non surgical procedures safer for all patients and therefore create more money for the facilities as people would trust the procedure..you need more pay for the precision and work you put in.
