Amazing what a little paint can do for a 40 year old F18! I was a kid living at the Cold Lake Air Force base when the first one arrived in '82. A big step up from our F104's and F5's. Can't wait to see our colors on the F35's in a few years.
I was living in Chicoutimi near the Bagotville air base back in the early 1980. We use to bring lawn chair and sit right at the end of the runway. Great memories.

I wouldn't hold your breath on getting the F35's. The contract for the Super Hornets was thrown in the trash, so we'll probably never get anything better than what we have now.
I was an Airframe Tech in 410 Sqn for 10 years, and we were usually the Sqn that formed the CF-18 Demo Team, although I was never on it. I DID work on several of the Demo planes (My Daughter's name was painted on the 2000 one along with 1999 other local students' names!), and I knew the person who designs the paint jobs - Jim Belleveau! VERY talented man! And Kudos to the guys who actually paint it!

This year, it is the 100th anniversary for the Royal Canadian Air Force, so they came up with that design. For example, on the left stabilizer they have all sorts of aircraft. This represents each roles of air power in the RCAF Fighter force: CF18 Maritime aviation: CH148 cyclone helicopter Search and rescue: CC130 Hercules Tactical airlift: CC177 (C17 globe master) Community outreach: CT114 tutor(snowbirds) RCAF personnel are represented with three silhouettes on the Demo Hornet’s starboard (right) vertical stabilizer, depicting a non-commissioned member, an officer and a pilot. basically just represents the history and heritage over the past 100 years of the RCAF. This is hypnotic, mesmerizing. I love the character of flight for these warplanes. Fast yet relaxed, rock-steady, no wobbling, heavy but knife precise.

In 1999, they painted an RCAF tartan "ribbon" on the tails of the Airshow plane - Reg 188719 if you want to look for it. EXACT to every thread. It took them DAYS to do it!
Fabulous pass by the Canuck, and love seeing the Atlas being thrown around too... seems some of the American boys missed the bit about it being a "LOW fly zone..." 😝

I forgot to mention likes on seeing the Mirage and Typhoon. We don't get a lot of that action on this side of the pond. And yes, I miss seeing the Vulcan fly. She was a regular growing up but I did see her Farwell tour years back at Abbotsford.
ZK335 looked like a workhorse, blotchy paint and all. And my Big Boy Atlas was also included. They go at it with the same mad attitude as the rest of them. Low, lower, lowest. Thank you!

@@DafyddPhillips Actually - they usually leave it in the fancy colours till it's time for a regular repaint - even plain grey paint is EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE - due to special properties - like Radar absorption, IRR, etc. so they don't like to repaint unless it's absolutely necessary. I've got several pics of 2 or even 3 former airshow planes (usually 2 years apart) flying together. I was in the Squadron that usually supplied the planes (410 Sqn) for 10 years and have pics of them from 1998 to 2006.
A little clarification is always needed when talking about the CF-18. Mainly because some folks repeat incomplete misinformation. Firstly, America has some old jets as well. Noting new in this. Secondly Canadian CF-188's, the official title, have been updated over the years. They are not the early 1980's model! The most recent update has very sophisticated radar on a number of these aircraft. And yes, the F-35a is coming to the RCAF. With all of this a period of time will exist where Canada will be operating both the CF-188's and F-35a. This should be an exciting time for the RCAF.

The Canadian CF-18 is in a special paint pattern, this aircraft is used for airshows, The rest of our CF-18s are just grey.
