We've come a long ways both Gamers and developers alike uniting with online compatible cross-play and the late 1960's is pretty much where it all started
Cross play/progression, is the best thing to happen imo, it's given me a chance to play games with friends that I couldn't previously because of our consoles of choice
The question now is, what type of PC do you want, one that plays on Microsoft servers or one that plays on Linux servers or one that does both and has a desktop OS and is fully customizable or one that's just handheld or a Nintendo Switch(you're allowed more than 1)? How much are you prepared to spend and what control scheme do you want to use?
During 360 and ps3 sony was hit frequently with DDoS attacks and had the major security breach and was down something like 2 to 3 months. Concerns for network stability and security were very real for cross play.

FFXI being cross platform was a selling point when the game was new. It was also cross progression. But the 360 and PS2 versions finally got discontinued a few years ago and that's why it's not advertised now. PC version is still rocking and rolling.

Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid has great cross-play - it's actually the first game to have cross-play across 5 platforms (Switch, PS5, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia). I've been playing it a ton online on Switch and have none of the hiccups that Smash always has, plus there's a solid player-base considering all the platforms and stability.
actually surprised you didn't mention dungeon defenders, as it was the first cross-platform game that I was aware of and that predates several of the games mentioned here. In fact it was on mobile, pc and I believe xbox as well. I think that was the first time I was ever made aware of a cross-platform game.
The bit about Square "hiding" cross platform functionality in FFXI is just a product of looking back on advertising from nearly 20 years future - it was absolutely not a secret, in fact it was one of the biggest selling points of the game both at its initial PS2/PC launch and later Xbox 360 port. This would later continue with FFXIV, whose flagship-feature PS3-PS4(/PC) cross play actually ended up holding the game back for a few years before PS3 was finally dropped.
A game I'd like to have with cross-platform-play/progression would be Elder Scrolls Online. It's the kind of game in which using a keyboard and mouse have no advantage versus using a gamepad
i remember playing Final Fantasy XI on my PC with Playstation 2 players(x360 later on), must''ve been one of the first cross platform games I can remember.
Cross progression for Witcher 3 between Switch and PC is amazing. It's also present for Divinity Original Sin 2 on Switch, but there's no crossplay for that heavily multiplayer game.
Star Wars Squadrons that comes out in October is gonna have crossplay and also VR support for PC and PSVR. This will be interesting to see if VR players have a small advantage when they can looks around in the cockpit and see enemies from different directions and keep an eye on things in a another way than flat screen gamers, or vice versa, maybe VR will be a disadvantage.
What I would love is that they realize they could work together to get 1 of switch, Xbox, and PS5 in every household I know some people who have 2 PS4s so that their friends can come over and play online with them. Now you don’t need the redundancy and instead can have 3 systems that can all play together if you have people over/ have a big family
It’s not widely known but the lobby pools for apex legends is dofferent from console to pc, on console you drop with 80 other players, and on console you drop with 60.
Portal 2 on ps3 completely negated what sony wanted, it actually ran a version of steam inside the game, allowing you to join your steam friends making it the earliest cross platform game i remember, and it was a blast. my copy also came with a free copy for steam.
Shadowrun is hands down one of my favourite games ever and no one ever talks about it, overwatch is the current Shadowrun though it's lost its way. The online experience was extremely fun and miss that era dearly, thankfully it seems so does Nintendo
It will be interesting to see as more titles (notably Apex) become crossplayable if Switch players will have the option to opt-out and opt-in to it, and at what levels of specificity (no crossplay, "console only" crossplay, "full" crossplay, etc.) While I'm 100% excited to play Apex on my Switch, getting wrecked by PC players who have the advantage of keyboard and mouse is not ideal.
Imaginiff cross progression worked on the Wii U and the switch so you could take your breath of the wild save from one system to the other that would be so cool you can probably come up with another single player game that it would be cool to have on a handheld device but the console/pc version has better graphics and you'd not want to play the switch version on a tv.
I’m actually excited for apex legends cross play, I have my own switch and usually never get to play on my family Xbox (used by my brother mostly) so being able to have my own taste of apex is exciting! This would also mean my dad, brother, and me could play apex on the same team.
Cross play and cross progression would be really useful for those who have a home console and a switch lite. That way a person doesn't have to constantly switch accounts on their switch which I hear is a royal PITA.
Hey there! I’ve been playing Switch Fortnite since it was released on it (I also created a secondary account on PS4 with the hope of merging the two but it was impossible). A few things I’ve noticed over time: • 30fps for Fortnite on Switch isn’t standard, it’s just the ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM it can run (besides when in the lobby). A lot of the time it’s closer to 24. It can drop significantly lower when dropping in the same area as multiple other players (especially in the Team Rumble mode where playable area is condensed) and during Live Events • 2/3 of the way through season 5 the Switch’s Video Capture function was disabled. It’s been almost 2 years & it hasn’t been reinstated. The Switch version is also unable to access Replay Mode in Fortnite either. • Initially, you couldn’t transfer your account to a PS4 from anywhere else so as you said in the video, if you created an account on PS4 it was stuck there and with no way to log out in the console versions, you couldn’t switch either. The only way around this is to have a second user on your console. • Matchmaking has evolved over time. Initially you were pitted against whoever readied up at the time in your region, and if there weren’t enough on your preferred console it would pull people from other consoles. I used this to have my PS4 account drop in to the same match as my Switch account so that I could beat specific challenges. This is no longer possible as of Chapter 2, unless I’ve been incredibly unlucky when trying. • When playing alone, you’re pitted against people on your console, in your region, and the lobby is boosted up slightly by the addition of AI players (referred to as “Bots”) if need be. Like you said in the video, Switch is also partnered with Mobile servers. If you add another party member & they’re on a different console you’ll be placed into their servers instead, and if they’re on PC you’ll join THOSE servers. This winds up giving the Switch player a hefty disadvantage, but it is STILL possible to win in the right circumstances (good teammates, good loot, decent skill etc.) That’s all I can think of right this second, but feel free to ask me anything that comes to mind, like “Would you play PC if you had one?” or “How does it compare to other games ported to Switch?” or “Are you crazy?” 😊
Naw, Square was pretty open about FFXI being cross platform/cross progression- it just didn't receive particularly heavy marketing in general post PS2 release and very briefly again when they released the 360 version. They also don't have regionalized servers for that game (or at least, not formally); they had this grand idea of the world playing together across all barriers that you just don't really see anymore.
I played Final Fantasy XI for nearly a decade. The cross-platform was great for accessibility, but the consoles, particularly the PS2, really held back the development of the game. "PS2 limitations" was a common answer in several Q&A sessions.
As a man who's still playing games on console instead of PC, I never understood the console war. If Xbox ever got more than two games I wanted to play, I would have bought one. All of the consoles have pros and cons, none of them are perfection. "Is only a console, why you have to be mad?"
Console gaming was rarely a cheap thing, so if you could afford a console, you'd have to choose and stick to one for a while - and gamers with steady income wasn't a common thing (what playstation 3? we've already got you that xbox thing for christmas). Remember that PS3 at launch costed $600 and X360 was slightly cheaper - still you could by a decent PC for that money (when usually you'd have to buy just newer graphic card or more RAM)
The last real console "war" was between Nintendo and Sega. "Console Wars" over the last 20 years have just been brand loyalty shouting in the echo chamber of the internet. The reality is there is no "console war" just people who are brand loyal defending their decision on which console they bought. People do this with cars, food, TV shows, clothing lines... They like a product so they become a "fanboy". Essentially just people with no life. Competition between the big 3 keeps them all in shape and delivering good consoles and games. Without financial competition you just end up with a bunch of companies like EA. In no world would any console winning so single handedly that we lose a Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony be good for gaming as a whole.
People spend money on these things and get stuck into that ecosystem so they feel they have to justify their purchase which causes an emotional attachment/ investment which prompts fanboys
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will be cross play with PS4, switch, pc, and mobile when it comes out. I'm really excited since my friend has a switch and I have PS4.
So interestingly with rocket league before it enabled crossplay everywhere else it had crossplay between pc and ps4, just excluding xbox. Sony was interesting in that they seemed fine to allow crossplay between ps4 and pc but didnt want any other consoles to enable it
Actually, Epic Games has supported the cross-platform with PS4 before Fortnite. They had a game called "Paragon" it was a 3D MOBA. You could either play on PC or PS4 and be able to cross-play within the platforms and Fortnite was already Cross-Platform with PS4 before launching to Switch.
It was originally probably largely due to architectural differences. Consoles used to be totally bespoke hardware that worked nothing like anything else. It's why in the 16 bit era we frequently got completely different games under the same name between consoles. The Dreamcast was running Windows CE, so that's probably partially why it got to play online with PC. Today with UWP the hurdle of effectively different games talking with each other to be one game is probably largely gone for Xbox and PC. And the switch being basically an android tablet a lot more devs have a lot more experience.
I'm hoping that, at the very least, cross-platform play comes to Nintendo games like Mario Kart 8, where somebody with a Switch can play against somebody with a Wii U, since the game came out on both consoles. This would be great for people that still have a Wii U, and want to race against their friend who has a Switch.
First and foremost, I love the direction things are going. I love being access my PC save file for Witcher 3 and Divinity Original Sin 2 on Switch and continue going and access my PC save file for Crackdown 3 and Final Fantasy XV on Xbox One and continue going. I also love being able to swap between platforms on the fly in Rocket League, Smite, Paladins, Fortnite, and a few others and continue playing with friends regardless of what platform I'm on. The fact that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles definitive edition and Pokemon Unite will have cross play makes me very excited for both. Second, Final Fantasy XI was the first ever cross play and cross progression game I recall. It was amazing. Why has it taken this long for this to become standardized? Third, I hope that all games going forward implement crossplay and cross save for all platforms they're on, ESPECIALLY online RPG's. I'm so sick of having to choose what platform I'll invest in when thinking about games like Division 1&2, Anthem, Elder Scrolls Online, Destiny 1&2, etc. I understand the platform companies and publishers think that if they lock the platforms, it'll cause people to rebuy the game multiple times, but the reality for me is, if you let me take my save with me and play with my friends regardless of what platform I'm on, I'll be more likely to get the game on multiple platforms. If you restrict my progression and friends to a single platform though, I'm not as likely to get the game on multiple platforms.
I hope all multiplayer games go cross platform as many titles fall by the wayside due to low player base, consolidating people Into one small easy to use package is what is needed.
my perfect gaming utopia would be full cross play with xb1 switch ps4 and pc with no exclusives so consoles would have to fully improve to sell well that would be god like to see

Love your Grookey mug!
The title hooked me and so is this channel had to subscribe congrats on the million subscribe Mark 👍👍👍
I look forward to Bob bleeping out his swear words with the switch click every time
Its a bit overused tbh
The playstation one was nice
During 360 and ps3 sony was hit frequently with DDoS attacks and had the major security breach and was down something like 2 to 3 months. Concerns for network stability and security were very real for cross play.
It should become a thing between all platforms
I remember the good ol days when my friends and I got link cables for our GBA's to connect to our GameCube. Good times...
NOW, we just fvck each other up in COD, lol
FFXI being cross platform was a selling point when the game was new. It was also cross progression. But the 360 and PS2 versions finally got discontinued a few years ago and that's why it's not advertised now. PC version is still rocking and rolling.
I was never against cross-play I just never seen a use for it because I wasn't that big into MP games a few years ago but BUT I found Warzone and APEX Legends and I am all for it and can't wait to be able to play with Xbox and PC gamers in APEX soon and I am having a blast in Warzone playing with them now. It is really cool finding a chill Xbox or PC player and chatting with them about games on PS4 for me and the games they play.
Love your videos, Bob! They're informative, relaxing and funny. Keep it!
8:50 I actively play fortnite on the switch as im not in a position to purchase a higher end console. Ive played on it since season 5 and I havnt noticed that im matchmaked with fellow switch players while playing team based modes (duos squads). And ive played on Geforce Now before and the damage does feel the same, But 144 fps + Feels amazing
It's on Stadia?
Ps5?
hyped for the future of multiplayer
Yeah I can’t wait until I play Garfield kart with my pc friends
Hey sc6ut! I wouldn't expect to see you here your edits are sick.
actually surprised you didn't mention dungeon defenders, as it was the first cross-platform game that I was aware of and that predates several of the games mentioned here.
1:37 Looking at you, Overwatch.
Me : .___.
Don't forget iPads running Fortnite at 60fps and iPad Pros at 120fps, they also cross-play. I wonder what group those are assigned, though.
Mobile queues with Switch (well, used to)
I'm glad Cross-play is more of a thing. It will blow up next gen!
i remember playing Final Fantasy XI on my PC with Playstation 2 players(x360 later on), must''ve been one of the first cross platform games I can remember.
Sega Dream cast really was ahead of its time. What a shame..
Cross progression for Witcher 3 between Switch and PC is amazing. It's also present for Divinity Original Sin 2 on Switch, but there's no crossplay for that heavily multiplayer game.
Wolf den: moyang. sounds of me having a stroke in the corner
The whole lack of cross play is what pushed me into pc gaming as a kid.
VR is definitely an advantage considering you already have more FoV than a typical console gamer.
Cross progression is amazing on Switch. Civ 6, Witcher 3 and Divinity OS2 made people rebuy it just to try it out.
Power rangers :battle for the grid has cross play with all platforms.its a fun game wish more people play
What I would love is that they realize they could work together to get 1 of switch, Xbox, and PS5 in every household
I know some people who have 2 PS4s so that their friends can come over and play online with them. Now you don’t need the redundancy and instead can have 3 systems that can all play together if you have people over/ have a big family
I'm just waiting to destroy some 10 year olds on my switch when playing apex legends
As a parent of one of those 10 year olds THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE 😂😂
on the toilet
same
otherwise u lose ?
@@MakerOfChase you're welcome sir!🤣
It’s not widely known but the lobby pools for apex legends is dofferent from console to pc, on console you drop with 80 other players, and on console you drop with 60.
No one:
Wulff: Moe-Yang
fighting games would benefit from this.
remember my first cross-play experience being Portal 2 for PS3 / PC / Mac
Portal 2 was cross play between PS3 and PC as well, if you bought the game on PS3 you got a free PC copy as well.
It will be interesting to see as more titles (notably Apex) become crossplayable if Switch players will have the option to opt-out and opt-in to it, and at what levels of specificity (no crossplay, "console only" crossplay, "full" crossplay, etc.) While I'm 100% excited to play Apex on my Switch, getting wrecked by PC players who have the advantage of keyboard and mouse is not ideal.
apex on switch doesnt have cross play its only coming to PC/ps4/xbox
@@Kaida_Saya ..you good? i'm pretty certain they announced it is coming out with crossplay.
PC and Switch already play together on PSO2.
If Apex on switch comes with gyroscope support aiming is much easier. I play paladins on it and flicking in console is way more cool than using M&K
Call of duty modern warfare cross play is so good. My squad will frequently consist of all 3 of the gaming platforms
good channel man. high quality
Bob? Another great video - so well done!
FFXI was actually cross platform with PC, PS2, and Xbox360 and had a translator so you could play with people in Japan and communicate
Hey there! I’ve been playing Switch Fortnite since it was released on it (I also created a secondary account on PS4 with the hope of merging the two but it was impossible). A few things I’ve noticed over time:
• 30fps for Fortnite on Switch isn’t standard, it’s just the ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM it can run (besides when in the lobby). A lot of the time it’s closer to 24. It can drop significantly lower when dropping in the same area as multiple other players (especially in the Team Rumble mode where playable area is condensed) and during Live Events
• 2/3 of the way through season 5 the Switch’s Video Capture function was disabled.
This winds up giving the Switch player a hefty disadvantage, but it is STILL possible to win in the right circumstances (good teammates, good loot, decent skill etc.)
That’s all I can think of right this second, but feel free to ask me anything that comes to mind, like “Would you play PC if you had one?” or “How does it compare to other games ported to Switch?” or “Are you crazy?” 😊
I love how you sound like you're yelling at me, but nicely.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles coming to ps4, Mobile and switch with Cross play and Cross save, can't wait for it
I played Final Fantasy XI for nearly a decade.
Portal 2 also had cross-platform co-op between PC and PS3. Put a couple of hours into that.
i am IN LOVE with ur new beard
11:21 the name on that gun is pretty classy bob
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will be cross play with PS4, switch, pc, and mobile when it comes out. I'm really excited since my friend has a switch and I have PS4.
So interestingly with rocket league before it enabled crossplay everywhere else it had crossplay between pc and ps4, just excluding xbox. Sony was interesting in that they seemed fine to allow crossplay between ps4 and pc but didnt want any other consoles to enable it
Exactly he said xbox and switch had it first which isn't correct..
You sound like you're in the know until you tell us, switch is basically an android tablet. Not sure where to knock my head off.
Dauntless have cross-play on all platforms as well, like many others here I do wish for more cross-play.
i love to play games with my friends on other platforms
An very interesting topic and also a important one.Good Video🙂
Is the video down or something? Can’t play it rn. It says (no stream)
Same is happening to me
Same here...
Same here
I'm hoping that, at the very least, cross-platform play comes to Nintendo games like Mario Kart 8, where somebody with a Switch can play against somebody with a Wii U, since the game came out on both consoles.
I like cross platform between consoles beside PC for competitive games, Because aiming with a mouse has a HUUUUGE advantages against a controller
I hope all multiplayer games go cross platform as many titles fall by the wayside due to low player base, consolidating people Into one small easy to use package is what is needed.
Video won’t work for me? It says “No Stream - Tap to retry”
my perfect gaming utopia would be full cross play with xb1 switch ps4 and pc with no exclusives so consoles would have to fully improve to sell well that would be god like to see
