  • This drone video captures the exterior of 1,000 Trees, a shopping centre in China that Thomas Heatherwick's studio designed to resemble a greenery-covered mountain.
Recently opened in Shanghai, the building is covered with 1,000 structural columns that Heatherwick Studio has turned into planters for over 1,000 trees and 250,000 plants.
In the video, the planters are visible from various aerial views and also in a time-lapse that transitions from day to night, demonstrating how they are lit up after sunset.
The video is courtesy of Heatherwick Studio.

    I can't decide if I think it's hideous or I like it.

it got a dystopian feeling to it, uncanny, can't think of how to maintain it though

As a resident living just on the other side of the river, my main complaint is there are SO MANY DRONES!! Thsese have since been so annoying, from early in the morning to midnight. Common for " INSTAGRAMABLE" spot.
The architecture & landscape itself is spectacular, and do highlights this area.
Shopping experience is not as good as its external appearance, indoor floor area from 5F-8F is far less than what is normal for mall this size. Not very balanced (architectural space vs commerical management) as a shopping destination.
Anyway, still looking forward to seeing PHASE 2 of this project !!

hope the trees will survive there.. or maybe these are trees that won't grow tall?

I thought this has some similiarities with the Little Island Park in NYC, turns out both are by Heatherwick Studio.

Those trees will never offset the carbon emissions from the concrete pots, let alone the building. Looks cool tho

Looks beautiful but at same time it looks weird... maybe because they're all close.. this has to be little bit dangerous doesn't it??

The back is so ugly though. It's like they ran out of money half way through. The front is incredible on the other hand.

The trees look to awkward and unnatural
