    I meal plan based on what is growing in our garden, growing at the organic farm we work at, or what's on sale at the store. Your prices are hit and miss on lots of items. Your organic produce is high but not crazy 😜. I have been working an organic farm for 25 years, and the prices can be insane sometimes, but it all depends on supply/demand. So glad we only pay 20 dollars per year and get as much as we want. I can/freeze everything and shove veggies down my family's throat all growing season. I love watching 👀Your videos. Thank you for sharing your Alaskan life with us.

My husband HATES grocery shopping 😂🤷) down here we have a store called "Aldi" and they have a great selection on anything. Canned goods, produce, organic items, everything. When my two daughters were growing up I always meal planned. I usually based our meal plans around what meat was on sale that week or what we already had in the freezer. Now that they are grown up and on their own, I don't meal plan quite as much. I still shop meat sales at Costco or Sams Club and re-package into smaller amounts. I will get something out to thaw either the night before or first thing in the morning and just make a meal around that for my husband and I. I keep my pantry stocked and we typically always have things for salads etc.

    • @ThisAlaskaLife
      @ThisAlaskaLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What you do now sounds very similar to us, except the meat comes from moose and fish in the freezer. Getting the meat out the night before or the morning of is KEY for me. If I have some sort of meat out, making dinner is no sweat. If I forget, I panic, and then remember we have other options like canned meat or just have dinner a little later. Thanks for being here Kelly, I appreciate your thoughtful comments.

    Although I bought them this year, I normally don't buy grapes because I would buy them and then forget about them and they go bad on me!! Some of the prices seem similar but others a bit higher. Today , (NE PA) , I saw cherries for 7.99! I was shocked ! They weren't regular ones, some specialty ones. I usually don't buy them because even at a lower price they are more than I want to spend ( I am learning to use these words taught to me by my financial coach rather than the words 'i can't afford it'). I would to plan my meals but it doesn't always go that way ...someday!...and sometimes I buy the ingredients and then a few days later...wonder, why did I buy this? Because I put the recipe in a safe place! Looking forward to seeing your family at the cabin!

      Hello Emmi! Grapes are gobbled up quick around here since they are so rarely on sale. I agree 100% about the cherries, they are always SOOOO expensive. My dad is obsessed with Cherries and buys them often so I always go have a few when he gets them. I will buy them if I am feeling extra fancy and can find them under $4 a pound. Hi, I’m in Kansas City, and what stuck out to me is the Honeycrisp apples price. It’s about the same here cuz they’re out of season. By Sept the price will come down here, idk about where u r. Other than that, all the other prices were higher. I’m like you I shop Sams and Costco so grocery store prices all seem high. I don’t think Sams and Costco prices are rising as fast as other stores…thankfully. Maybe quantity helps them keep prices down.
    I meal plan. I plan around the ads now especially cuz of meat prices. I buy what’s on sale and in season, and plan meals around that. We also eat meatless a couple times a week. So far I haven’t had to raise our food budget.

    Watching from the northern part of Michigan , near Lake Michigan. At our local grocery store, I.e. Spartan store or privately owned, our prices actually seem similar. If I am shopping at Walmart Or Meijer, we can expect about a 20% savings. Your milk and bread do seem a touch spendy though. With just two of us, it’s not so bad. I do shop from a list because I have a hubby who likes to add things to the cart and that’s where the budget would go out the window . So a list keeps him in order and prevents too many goodies in the cart .

    When I’m on my game I meal plan. When I’m not in my game i just fall back on our favorites that I just know off the top of my head.

    I plan on the fly most of the time. Your watermelon price was the most surprising. We get ours on sale here in Indiana around 2.99 on sale or at least 3.99. Wpw. As others said the rest was hit or miss.

      Wow..$2.99! I’d have watermelon every day! 🌺 Jen

      That is an amazing price for watermelon! My kids would be so excited to have it more often. I agree, the other prices were hit or miss. If you shop the sales, you can do pretty well at Fred Myer. Thanks for watching, have a wonderful weekend!

    I like to look at the sales paper. Write a list, from that sale and what I have already at home then meal plan. I’m watching from Chicago Illinois.

      @ThisAlaskaLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great idea! That is so smart to plan it all out with the sales paper, I am not there right now! I am more a plan as I shop unless I am making a list for camping so I don't forget half of the things we will need. Thanks for watching Mary, I am grateful you are here.

    We prefer to meal plan and shop from a list however is happens maybe only once a month.

    • @ThisAlaskaLife
      @ThisAlaskaLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome! I was trying to figure out how I could only shop once a month. What do you do about having fresh fruit and veggies for the month? I feel like I need to restock those every 7-10 days.

    I thought California groceries was expensive but l have to say there is even more expensive !

    • @ThisAlaskaLife

      They are very expensive for most things. All the extra cost from shipping up here and often the quality is low once it’s made it’s way all the way up here! Thanks for watching!

    I do not shop with list, because I forget the list normally. I use the store sale items & I fill in when am in need of certain items.

    Your cabin reminds me of the Netflix series “Virgin River”. Does the water ever get warm enough to swim in?

    • @ThisAlaskaLife
      @ThisAlaskaLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it depends on who you are asking....the ocean water stays around 40-45 degrees. Mark loves to swim in it using a thick wetsuit (you can watch his awesome diving here th-cam.com/video/XOhxbYSx-t8/w-d-xo.html) and my kids love to jump in all the time. I on the other hand prefer to stay on the shore and film. I have jumped in a few times but only if it is really hot and sunny. We do swim in the lakes around our house, they warm up much more than the ocean.

      AND I love Virgin River! I had never thought about it before but the cabins are similar.

      @@ThisAlaskaLife yes ma’am I do! Everything seems to be so much higher where I live from housing to food to gas! I live about 10 minutes from New York City! New Jersey is known for high taxes which is why a lot of people are moving far from here and going south! If I could get my husband to move I would be out so fast too!!

    Grocery shopping there is fun. But my concern is favoritism there. I know friends that currently and that have worked there. They have friends that have other friends that worked at other Alaska’s locations and they all mentioned Favoritism. If your not up to Par with them, they give other people hours and they treat you like the bottom of the group, like trash. So be ready to KISS their ASS if you wanna be in their Favorite Group of Employees.
