  • One of Earth’s most drastic ecotones-the transition between one ecosystem and another-can bring together rainforest and savanna species side by side. The sharp transition allows mingling between Forest Elephant, Gorilla, Hyena, Lion, and more. Join us today in this exploration of one of Africa’s strangest geographic features.

    There are a handful of places in East Africa where Mountain Gorillas and Lions are “close” (as the crow flies), but they’re separated by major elevation differences. Although lions have on occasion ascended mountains into montane rainforest (this has been seen in southwest Ethiopia, for instance), it would be unusual. These slopes don’t really have the same seamless mingling of rainforest and savanna species that is seen in Bateke.

    Unfortunately both species, Lions and Gorillas are diminishing drastically in all Africa. As far as I know there are no registered encounter between this two formidable species. The only great predator of the african forests is the Leopard and there are some records of leopard predation on gorillas.

    • @DieFlabbergast
      @DieFlabbergast ปีที่แล้ว +20

      On young gorillas, that would be. A leopard (even a male) would not be able to prey even on an adult female gorilla, much less a male. Like all carnivores, cats only attack animals that they instinctively know they can kill without danger of injury. Being a predator is a job, not a hobby.

    • @jakesimmonds5043
      @jakesimmonds5043 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wrong, leopards have killed silverbacks multiple times. A leopard is more than capable of killing an adult female gorilla. There's literal scientific reports of it, a silverback being mauled by a leopard and running away was even recorded in the 80s

    I'm torn about reintroduction and recovery of extinct and threatened species. whenever you artificially increase the population of an animal/organism in an ecosystem you are almost directly killing an unknown amount of others. recovery of lions in this region for example is going to ensure the death of many other of the native animals and what gives us the right to treat nature like it's our own personal zoo? there's been tremendous efforts to reintroduce animals like wolves to areas where they've gone extinct and thats great for wolves but its a nightmare for the local cervid and rodent population. why are wolves a more valuable animal than the others? i think we should be as hands off as possible with the wild fauna around us.

      A lion would certainly kill a gorilla, but under the right circumstances it also risks walking away with broken bones and ghastly wounds. Silverback gorillas have a stronger bite force than both lions and bears, and they’re definitely mighty enough to break bones with a swing of their arm. A lion wins the battle, but the gorilla protects his family for sure
