One of the very few channels that does not do this glossy "show off" rubbish and actually shows people everything. Thank you so much, Joel! I am learning all sorts of different styles of dog personalities too, which helps me to assess other dogs we may meet on walks too. Brilliant, mate!

I agree. The part where her owner says that we know she’s not an aggressive dog but other people on the street don’t know. They just see a dog who “looks” potentially dangerous/aggressive to the untrained eye, or the passerby.
You can tell how much he cares for this dog and wants to give her the best quality of life possible. I love dog owners like this!

FINALLY! A dog that most closely resembles mine. That natural correction moment is my dog’s energy completely, her walking behavior is identical. She uses her whole body and sometimes just lays on other dogs, really throwing her weight around and she’s just way too much for them. It’s nice to hear the language Joel to describe this dog’s personality, it’s encouraging as just a trait rather than discouraging as a pathology or something. We use hemp oil with ours and it has gotten her at least to a trainable level which has been huge for her. We can definitely tell when she hasn’t taken it. “Dominant, High energy” is definitely her, except the guarding any and everything with her life is still the toughest part to deal with. Mine IS aggressive in this way. Still, thanks for filming this!!!

The lab tested, high quality CBD is a good idea. I also discovered that magnesium (not magnesium oxide) works really well for these dogs who's nervous system is off.
I just started experimenting with high quality essential oils, but animals are way more sensitive- look up which are safe for dogs.
I'm sorry but I couldn't help but lol when you tried to walk her, because I totally understand. It makes my head spin.

Agree Joel great to follow as fantastic trainer. Doggy Daycare Farm Trips on TH-cam (Australian dog daycare and training) amazing to watch also as due to Covid closures they took rescue dogs that were on ‘death row’ and the transformation was amazing to watch. Well worth watching Luke on DDFT for his style of training and the results were quite emotional eventually as dogs reformed and re homed so wonderful. They have continued to take last chance dogs…..and endless litters of backyard bred puppies with no future and who doesn’t like watching puppies 🐶👍

I'm dealing with this with my two year old rescue at the moment. I wouldn't say she's as dominant as Indie, but definitely high energy and a rough player who is very leash reactive towards other dogs on walks. We're still trying to get her to meet more dogs in a controlled setting like this, but there aren't many willing to help. She also has the same issue of always needing to be a couple steps in front of me, regardless of how many corrections I give. She won't quite pull on the leash anymore like she used to, but still won't stay at my side. I wish you were up in Ontario, Canada lol

Charlie I think started to give her gentle warning bites/mouthing when she was too much and she had to go to battle. Man Joel it's not often I hear you recommend calming stuff, very interesting she is just wired. More mental stimulation via tricks/obedience/exposure may help with the frantic ness, like regular training schedule of basic obedience, but man good luck. Good video love the nonstop dog behavior action.

Working as a human nutritionist in the UK, I used exactly the approach I would take with a hyperactive child to help my VERY excitable dog. Give her the wrong food and 12 hours later she is literally bouncing off the walls. Working through diet issues and problems with gut bacteria (which change the dogs neurotransmitters) has helped her so much. She is now able to focus enough for us to teach her key skills to relax and enjoy life 🙂

    • @jays.3702

What food and/or what brand dog food do you recommend introducing to dogs? I’ve had thoughts about how diet is affecting my dog. Any tips are appreciated.

    • @joknight1148
      @joknight1148 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@jays.3702 We use Natures Menu Country Hunter range in the UK. It's a frozen raw food, that you thaw when needed for the dog. The big difference with this particular product is that it's 80% pure meat, and the veg added in is low starch e.g. swede, carrots, etc. If we use food that is 20-30% sweet potato, rice, or potato, this starch just sends her wacky, and loose bowels. Most food is 40%+ of starchy carbs, even when its grain free etc, and it just feeds her bacterial problems. With our dog we also have to be careful about meat choice as she has several intolerances too to Turkey, chicken, and some others, but is okay with duck and rabbit. One word of warning - the first week particularly you can see some increased behaviour issues when you cut the starch content of the diet - this is because as bacteria die-off they actually create more toxins and more reaction initially. Good luck.

THIS IS MY DOG! The struggle walking her is spot on. When I got her at a shelter, she pulled like a Belgian horse. Unlike my other dogs, she did not catch on to my changing direction and popping the leash.
When I first got her, if people appeared 200 feet away, she'd fixate, quiver, and go into a frenzy, lunging and snapping. She'd pull me over and drag me across the lawn at the park.
    She's worse with dogs.
It's been almost 4 months and she's much better. After trying lots of things, the gentle leader and muzzle have been the best investments. I wasn't sure how to do a correction on the gentle leader so thanks for that!
I've taken her to a dog park where she can be outside the fence, and have had a few OK meetings... but she's unpredictable.
Why the shelter thought she was a good match for a 75 yr old lady I don't know! I wanted a quiet old dog. I met her and I did ask whether she was good on a leash and friendly with dogs... let's say they evaded the questions!

I have watched close to a hundred of your videos now... and I can honestly say I agree with absolutely 100% of your training methods. I have a rescue 16 month old female Vizsla. She had 0 socialisation with dogs up until I got her at 6 months (she lived in 3 homes before I got her and the last she lived in their back garden in the shed with no people or dogs around her all day every day for at least 2 months..). I've had her around 50-100+ new dogs now and she has been good with all of them bar 3 different dogs during her fear period. She is reactive on lead to dogs (usually small dogs) barking in her face and not leaving her alone or any dog excitedly rearing up infront of their owners on their own leads towards her. Regardless, she wears a muzzle at parks just in case she reacts to any grumpy dogs until I can trust her to leave them and come to me on command every time. My problem is she has developed lead frustration reactive recently because she thinks she has a right to meet every dog (baring in mind, when on lead walks she has not been allowed to meet every dog because when she has too much energy she is a bull in a china shop which most dogs don't like so she is not allowed to meet them in my point of view.. until she settles down next to me then they can come say hi to greet her). I know I don't do everything right because she still has some issues but watching your videos has helped me without question with understanding her body language and reactions and I can't thank you enough. We still have a long journey ahead but I wish your facility was in England because I would LOVE the opportunity for you to meet her and tell me your thoughts on her. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTENT, no gate keeping on dog training with you which I appreciate so much, you have already helped me with training my dog in the short 10 months I have had her :)

Joel--- thank you so kindly... your stamina, yet, grace, under pressure, and desire to do a good honest job, is a treasure to us... I took care of kids, as a babysitter, and then, was a young mom of four, and now a grandma: it helped me learn to work with my dog pets, over the years.. sadly, I have one regret as to one of my dogs: when I naively trusted my ignorant-as-to-dogs, due to his upbringing, husband 😔... I made sure to NEVER never trust someone again... WE NEED trainers, teachers, coaches, like you, (and, césar, too) ... I NOW have 2 new adopted rescue dogs (learning that there was more to their history, than they really told me--- although, what they DID tell me, was true: they are not vicious, or, biters, thankfully.. THUS-- I really needed help!! One was an extremely fearful retreating avoiding-nearly-everything, dog.. the other was used to running free in yard, with that companion dog, doing whatever they wanted 😳... yet, they lay to rest, in the house , at your feet, when inside.. well-- because of YOUR work here, I am ABLE to have successs with these dogs, and NOT give up, from the unexpected issues, or, from 2 dog relationships at play--- which I was ignorant of.. thank you with all my heart, for doing what your gut-feeling LED you to do with your life ❤ .. you have the reward of seeing so many success stories for dogs/owners and, a good conscious 🤗🥰... may God continue to bless you and your home...

This truly is what a lot of people deal with, with their dog.. I watched the time stamp over and over, where she got mad.. Maybe what triggered her was the pup got kinda trapped and tangled... Pups face went up and over Her face.. and She took that as an attempt to dominate Her.. The second bad behavior, you will hear a pup yelp and that got her to react. Not sure who yelped but she was upset afterward at the retriever. Love the 2 part videos, breaking up the sessions.. Well.. I’ve got the male dog equivalent -almost identical in shape, colour, features. He’s a muscular, 49kg Bullmastiff/GSD cross. And now at 3 years and 4 months, leash reactivity is much improved (it is mainly fear and prey chase-based), rough play potential still there, so cannot be let loose at the park. But have to say, attending weekly dog pack boot camp, he’s gone from surly OTT muzzle-wearing dog, to non-muzzle, smiley mooching around pooch. I found changing to raw from kibble made a massive difference to eliminate alot of hyperactivity. Excess carbs they don't digest, or at the very least a low low carb kibble of it must be kibble. Yes to essential oil blends. There are some blends for diffusers and collars. Even little pouches that can hang or attach to the collar. Yes to CBD oil, low daily dose, usually takes 3 to 5 weeks consistently to see good results. And melatonin as a daily supplement in their food can reduce anxiety and hyperactivity too that I've had success with. Exercise is obvious. Alot of mental stimulation like obedience, scent work, adding a weighted vest or backpack and swimming for sure. All of the above for this girl.

I bet that dog would get a lot of her crazy energy out if she had a job like finding a hidden item, search and rescue or something like that, gotta keep that overactive brain busy with something constructive or it’s just like people with anxiety they think too much and it gets overwhelming for them. I totally agree that she is “too much.” Like she doesn’t understand how to match her behavior to canine social cues, and her excitement takes over. I genuinely think she wants to be friendly with those dogs, but she gets so overstimulated with no impulse control. So wrestling gets too rough, growling is used in awkward situations, and she’ll walk over a dog if it allows her too! She’s got a lot of energy and feelings.

Wow. I have an amstaff and this is a duplicate of my dog. Been giving him cbd and has been working and is now able to relax at times. But the energy level is just like my 11 mo old pup. Gotta stay ahead a few steps when walking no mater how many corrections. He’s rough and have not been able to meet other dogs because of it. Thanks for this videos. They have helped me a lot with my training. I would like to see a video of what you think about e-collar training.

She was being very smelly with the other dog, I slowed it down and it looks like the other dog attempted to correct her slightly. She was being too much so the other dog gave two very half assed little ‘stops’ and she escalated it because she was so stimulated is what I saw!

Alternatives to training you mentioned at the end, Lavender essential oil is the best and safest for calming. Good quality, pure, no synthetics.

Carrying backpack is not work, its just extra weight that dog doesnt think as work. I dont have proper work to my dog yet, other than walking on the heel on walks.

She seems to really be overstimulated with all those meetings. She has had so many new impressions. Just like any person who experienced too many very strong first time emotions which are difficult to handle.

i agree. especially easily triggered dogs, like the mali mix i think she is, cannot always handle their nerves all too well. they need some time and proper guidance.

So much like my male/neutered rescued Siberian Husky... Moved beyond proper side submission; progressed through leash popping and/or leash pinning; sporadic displacements. And what works best for calming I've learned is a couple of "Old Indian Lessons" - O.I.L. - both literally and metaphorically. R.A..W. diet also really helps these "SUPRA Canines."

Has anyone ever seen dogs like this calm down when they lose that excess weight? I'd get overweight fosters from the shelter and they'd lose weight just by playing with my dog and eating normal meals, and it was a very small sense, but I could tell it was like a weight was lifted off their shoulders. They could finally fully relax and lay around in the sun. Maybe it was just all the play since my dog was quite young then and they were exhausted. Have you seen the same thing?

    Adaptil
Helps your dog feel calm and comfortable by mimicking a mother dog's natural nursing pheromones.
they make a few different items I used the diffuser and I believe it relaxed my dog.
Edit: They also have a collar not sure if it will work for an excited dog but might be worth a try.

Hey, Joel. This might sound a little weird and whacky, but when my dog was a frantic puppy, I would stroke and groom him using dog-calming music (there are seriously dozens of videos on YT.) You use it at the best time, obviously, but it kind of breaks that pattern of behaviour. Worth a try. 🙂

In Canada Pitbulls dont get second chances by the authoritys . In the 7 days ive had my rescue the results from your methods have astonishing 😆. My boi is only 3. Im confident our progress will continue the more i follow the example u set sir. 👌

I believe the term "dominant" is defined as whomever actually wins the scarce resources. A dog might huff and puff all they want and still not end up winning anything.
So by "dominant" here you mean a dog who tries to assert itself all the time.

    Hi Joel,
Do you have a link for the head harness? It looks a little more robust than the gentle leader which might work better for me and my very strong 9mo GSD pup. I like the gentle leader, but It scares me when he gets too excited and pulls, I just worry it'll come off or he'll get out of it somehow.
I think I've found one that looks like it, but it's always nice to get your recommendation.
    Thanks!

This girl is a wild woman. Very tough challenge. Her owner could try massage to relax her. Lots of long, slow, calming strokes. Acupuncture is another thing he could try; it's supposed to release pent-up, stagnant energy in the body, and she certainly has that going on.

  • @stevenpetrovich

Are you using the gentle leader under the muzzle? Or have the leash clipped to the muzzle?

Looked like she got frustrated that he didn’t stand still so she could smell/lick as she wanted. It’s like she got so frustrated that she couldn’t get to him when he just kept running away. Or maybe that another new dog showed up at the side and she noticed it just before it happened.

Charlie got tangled in the leash, dog behind the fence, white wall. Reaction to all the spatial pressure? To calm over excitement before and during a walk or at any time so a dog doesn't go in hot, I hold the leash straight up in the air (not strangling the dog, just controlling the head and keeping it facing front) while I face the dog up close (frontal pressure) so we're facing each other - similar to Joel's collar hold - but dog is standing still, the dog can't ignore you or look at that dog, then I put my feet like a duck and walk straight into the dog, make him take 4 or 5 steps backwards. Straight back. Now he really can't look at that dog or anything but me. For really high levels of excitement or over arousal, SEVEN STEPS BACK. Or repeat. There you go. Instant CALM. It's like down shifting a standard transmission on a car.

  • @sairhug
    @sairhug 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Re things to calm ... I've had fantastic success with Bach Rescue Remedy (the usual spray bottle for humans is what I've used, though they now do a 'pet' version at an inflated price). My first dog - for reactivity to fireworks (she wasn't scared of them - she was highly annoyed!); my second dog - for car sickness (finally a cure after 9 months of drool 'n' hurl). Dose for a smaller dog = 1 squirt; for a larger one 2 squirts, either directly on on the tongue (not down the throat, but ON the tongue), or if they're happy to, to lick off your palm. Give the dose slightly in advance - so for this girl it'd be a few minutes before setting off on the walk. Repeat as necessary.
