  • Grey’s Anatomy actor Jesse Williams gave a passionate speech against the current system of impunity for police brutality. Racists want him fired for it, so they started a change.org petition. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"An online petition popped up over the weekend on Change.org calling for Williams to be fired from his longtime role in the hit ABC sitcom Grey's Anatomy...
The petition was started by a user named Erin Smith, who condemned Williams's "negative attitude." Smith also called Williams's words "hate speech against law enforcement and white people," and wrapped up with the controversial hashtag #AllLivesMatter...
Williams gave his speech on June 26 after accepting the 2016 BET Humanitarian Award. In it, he gave a searing indictment of racism in America.”*

I have had someone do this to me before; in fact, I had a rather long discussion with someone about it. I was commenting on the amount of people coming out of the woodwork since Donald Trump made being a racist, sexist, homophobic, and misogynistic socially acceptable - or at least made the people who are those things believe they are socially acceptable - and he called me a bigot for pointing out bigotry. Apparently, if you point at someone who says that gays are like paedophiles - while ignoring that most paedophiles identify as heterosexual or bisexual or have no sexual inclination towards adults of any gender and preferring YOUNG CHILDREN because AGE is what they care about - or saying that gays should be arrested for being gay or put to death for being gay, and call that person bigoted for what they are saying, you are being bigoted. You are being bigoted by calling a bigot a bigot. And I found that so mindbogglingly stupid that at first I didn't even know how to react.

      It has been said already.
Imagine that you're sitting down to dinner with your family, and while everyone else gets a serving of the meal, you don't get any. So you say "I should get my fair share." And as a direct response to this, your dad corrects you, saying, "everyone should get their fair share." Now, that's a wonderful sentiment -- indeed, everyone should, and that was kinda your point in the first place: that you should be a part of everyone, and you should get your fair share also. However, dad's smart-ass comment just dismissed you and didn't solve the problem that you still haven't gotten any! The problem is that the statement "I should get my fair share" had an implicit "too" at the end: "I should get my fair share, too, just like
everyone else." But your dad's response treated your statement as though
you meant "only I should get my fair share", which clearly was not your intention. As a result, his statement that "everyone should get their fair share," while true, only served to ignore the problem you were trying to point out.
That's the situation of the "black lives matter" movement. Culture, laws, the arts, religion, and everyone else repeatedly suggest that all lives should matter. Clearly, that message already abounds in our society. The problem is that, in practice, the world doesn't work the way. You see the film Nightcrawler? You know the part where Renee Russo tells Jake Gyllenhal that she doesn't want footage of a black or latino person dying, she wants news stories about affluent white people being killed? That's not made up out of whole cloth -- there is a news bias toward stories that the majority of the audience (who are white) can identify with. So when a young black man gets killed (prior to the recent police shootings), it's generally not considered "news", while a middle-aged white woman being killed is treated as news. And to a large
degree, that is accurate -- young black men are killed in significantly disproportionate numbers, which is why we don't treat it as anything new. But the result is that, societally, we don't pay as much attention to certain people's deaths as we do to others. So, currently, we don't treat all lives as though they matter equally.Just like asking dad for your fair share, the phrase "black lives matter" also has an implicit "too" at the end: it's saying that black
lives should also matter. But responding to this by saying "all lives matter" is willfully going back to ignoring the problem. It's a
way of dismissing the statement by falsely suggesting that it means "only black lives matter," when that is obviously not the case. And so saying "all lives matter" as a direct response to "black lives matter" is essentially saying that we should just go back to ignoring the problem.
TL;DR: The phrase "Black lives matter" carries an implicit "too" at
the end; it's saying that black lives should also matter. Saying "all
lives matter" is dismissing the very problems that the phrase is trying
      to draw attention to.

Associations fallacy. You are speaking to miya as if they are somehow responsible or have a say for the murders that happen between people who happen to share their skin color and you are also trying to include the other 96% who have nothing to do with said violence."then stop murdering the shit out of each other."--< is collectivization. Crime is just crime, that is it. Asian and african americans have a vastly different history in the united states and had their own plights to deal with. Asians still face racism and social stigmas it just not the same form.
Also your pedophilia argument is insanely idiotic. It's a false comparison. Being offended from accusations of pedophilia is not the same as getting offended at someone pointing out unlawful killings of a certain section of society.

+Jamal Jackson A previously unreleased interview with a top aide to President Richard Nixon indicates that the disgraced American leader stepped up drug prohibition in the United States for some pretty cynical reasons. When asked about the policies in 1994, Watergate co-conspirator John Ehrlichman, Nixon's White House domestic affairs adviser (1969-1973), bluntly responded that the so-called war on drugs was started to disrupt and imprison anti-war protesters and black people. You don't believe systematic racism is in full effect. Laws are made to keep blacks in line.

Honestly, I'm not sure what I find more amusing: this ridiculous petition or the beautiful irony of it all. Both the creator of Grey's Anatomy AND the president of ABC Network are extremely intelligent, strong BLACK WOMEN. If you found Jesse Williams' incredibly powerful speech to be offensive or if it makes you feel "uncomfortable" in ANY way, understand that feeling uncomfortable is a necessary part of unlearning oppressive behaviors. I believe there's a silent rage within ALL people that is awakened each time we're told to just accept the ignorance of social injustice. Stay mad racists, stay mad 😂

    • @Plasmon19
      @Plasmon19 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Ultimately nobody really cares about those injustices. People just move on with their lives and pay little to no mind to the corruption and brutality of the establishment. This is because they see people talking about it as though it is exclusively a race issue, not a class issue and they don't see it in front of their face. So they scoff at the people who seem concerned because they don't do anything about it either other than whine about it on social media. The situation is further exacerbated when you have groups like BLM forming white free safe spaces for black people, they further alienate the movement from people that don't share their skin color and call them racists even when they are supportive of their movement. They complain about cultural appropriation and encourage segregation. As a white guy why would I have any interest in helping your movement if you're going to marginalize me and make assumptions about me based on my skin color? BLM spits in the face of the people that could help them, it does opposite of what people like Martin Luther king envisioned. It puts race above character and the human condition.
I stand against BLM because of this, not because I have anything against black people. I judge individuals based on the content of their character, I don't underestimate anybody, nor do I pay mind to something as irrelevant and arbitrary as skin color.

What does being half white have to do with anything? That's like saying he's rich; therefore, he can't speak on the plight of the poor. Whites, blacks, whomever can speak about a marginalized group of people. If he was walking down the street, he would, at best, be considered a light skinned black guy. Certainly wouldn't be able to pull out that card if he was dealing with the cops. James blake, another mixed guy, learned that first hand.

Where I live in Ontario cops were constantly use them during almost all arrests rather than having to actually physically restrain the perp because the tasers were considered 'non-lethal', until of course several people had heart attacks (some of them never had a history or were at risk of heart problems) and died, so i haven't seen a taser on any of the local cops in like 9 years.

The police have the legal right to use *reasonable* force to detain a suspect. That is not a license to kill. Furthermore, when proof abounds that their use of force was beyond reason, they must be punished for their crimes as any other citizen. Every cop who refuses to speak out it culpable. They are part of an organization, and as such its reputation is their reputation. If it has a terrible reputation, quit or fix it.

There are SJWs that throw it out over little things and belittle it; and there are people like these petition people who use it to belittle the term when someone makes a perfectly reasonable speech on the award show. I am sick of people using the term when it does not apply!!! The speech Jesse Williams gave was perfectly reasonable!

People have an issue because police brutality isn't a white on black problem, it's a police on civilian problem. Only a small fraction of these cases are likely to be racially motivated. Conflating all of this to systematic racism is anti-intellectual and counter productive to solving our racism issues. It's stokes the flames and makes black people feel justified in acting out violently. I'm liberal, but I'm not an idiot, I used to agree with people like J. Williams, then I started looking into data and statistics. I looked at crime statistics, policing statistics, where police officers patrol, likeliness of compliance/resistance in arrests, etcetera. That's not to say there aren't individual cases of racism by police, but statistically, there isn't an epidemic of unwarranted violence by police against black people anymore than there is against white people. There's just a problem with police overuse of force in general.
