Everywhere I go, I read a lot of good things about the 500. But only as a city car. When it comes to highways, it is a horror, they say. Wind noises, motor too loud, bad noises and driving. It feels all the bumps, when the wind is stronger you get swayed from side to side and the 1.2 is just the base model. However, why I decided to buy it (even though I do highways) and omit the Mini cooper, is the unique design which makes it an icon. The original was one and the new models are too. It is supposedly fun to drive and sit in. It is a combination of modern and retro. A shame, really, that the 1.2 engine is not as good for highways, but I had the 1.1 Panda, which is basically the same engine and car (a 500 is a panda in a different cloak, they say) and the 1.1 petrol did 150kmh on a highway easy. so the 1.2 in a smaller and lighter car shouldn't be so bad.
WakingCobain but that's the thing with European small cars: they're called city cars and are in the subcompact A category for a reason. Not only the 1.2, which is a pretty old design, but definitely also theit turbo two cylinder, Volkswagens n/a 1.0 or turbo three cylinders, … are meant for city use. They get great economy over there and make sense, because European cities streets are just very small and narrow, they're historical and it's what makes them look pretty, but also what makes smaller cars more practical. I spent almost a year doing nothing but city driving with a VW 1.0 3cyl (na, 60 hp / 95 Nm) and I never managed to get a higher consumption than 6,2 l/100km!! Not close to the advertised 4,9 l, but for a gasoline car in city conditions... very good. And honestly, that car wasn't even too bad for highway driving. Did 120 km/h at 3.000 rpm and 180 at a little over 4.000 if it allowed it to. I've seen bigger engines do worse. But, even at 120 km/h, consumption usually creeped up to 7 l / 100 km, which wouldn't even be considered good for a bigger sedan with a 2.0 on gasoline. They're city cars, but because of some parts of Europe taxing on vehicles wieght and / or displacement (a smaller engine makes more sense and is more efficient in a smaller car), these cars are used for all kinds of things they weren't originally designed for. VW tries to make their subcompacts like the up or polo as highway capable as possible as well, but that's just not what they're for. When I moved out of the city, I traded the little three potter for a certified pre owned (na) V8. Love driving it, rarely needs more than 2k rpm in normal driving conditions, even uphill and just a nicer car for highway cruising or for driving around in my large town.
