  • Reviewing the Black Inc FIVE - which, might I stress, was not a paid gig. They are team sponsors but I was under no duress to do this. Just really rated the wheels!
If you want to get some yourself, here's the link and Alex10 gets you a 10% discount on all wheels. 5% of any sale also goes to my charity Little Bleeders. Could say that's wheelie nice.

Good to know I have been running my tyres with 30% too much pressure…
It just seems wrong to hit the road with 60psi in a 28mm tyre (I weigh 76kg).
But I put in the system weight and measured width right so guess I’ll give it a go.
Interestingly, Pirelli’s recommended tyre pressure matches up with what the calculator would tell me if the width printed on the casing were the width of the tyre when it’s on the rim…

Five spoke wheels are revisited every few years. I actually
like the look of 5 spoke wheels probably from my old bmx days. If the rigidity increased and you don't have to worry about spoke tension its a plus.
Black Inc should gift you the wheels Alex the cost to them is small for your exposure by just riding them outside of racing.

More in the aero part….. that almond shape you drew replicates an airplane wing to a degree. The upper half of the wing on a plane is more rounded than the bottom. Why? High pressure seeks low pressure, so, the air over the top of the wing has a longer distance to travel to meet up with the airflow speeding almost straight across the bottom. The result is a lower pressure on top of the wing and higher pressure on bottom, thus high seeks low (high pressure below wants to meet up with low pressure above) and creates lift. They also use something called Bernoulli’s principal. As air is squeezed pressure drops and velocity increases, and vice versa. That’s why the upper half of the wing is more rounded than the bottom. Apply Bernoulli’s principal to high and low pressure, and this is what makes planes fly, and the bike industry has copied for decades. Tube and wheel shaping is literally playing around with these 2 principals to maximize aerodynamic efficiency within UCI rules if that’s what they’re following.

  • @1stElement

Just thought though - if they aren’t UCI sanctioned wheels then the spokes also don’t need to be 3:1, right?

This could be the answer to disc brakes applying braking forces through the spokes. This is i feel is a big negative to the disc brake design.
As to the wheel letting go, remember a spoke wheel has sideways flex, on purpose to act like suspension to maintain the tyre contact with the ground, over bumps and undulations as a road bike has no suspension.
Interesting wheel, thanks for the review.

Obviously since there is only one mold and you are trying to supply the whole World you need to price them so you can keep up with demand. I'm sure they did the analysis and figured out just where to price them and they don't want every BMX'r wanting them for their single speeds. But the serious Ironman would have no problem dropping the cash. I do think for several reasons the UCI is correct in not allowing these types of wheels. Pretty good coverage of your opinion of these wheels though Alex.

  • @townegr

He mentioned they're aero but how does that compare to the deeper section Forty Five or Sixty wheelsets? The benefits of the Five include lower weight and more stiffness. The traditional spoked deeper section wheels are clearly more compliant but are they more aerodynamic?
