Very informative ..exact conclusion ..cycling has different disciplines needing different bike designs and components.. perhaps only full carbon rear wheel test .. front spoked each wheel serves a different purpose .. NOW that would be a first
Your amount of spokes dictates your lacing, and you can have the same amount of spokes in the front too, it is just done to save weight and look cool if you do radial lace. Ideally 32 or 36 holes for strength then after that it is up to you on how you want them to look and feel. I like the star 24 holes makes.
Only thing I am having problems with is bearings of my Elite Wheel G45. After 2.000KM the front one wore out and made heavy noises despite never seeing rain. Now after 2.8000 the rear one is toast. Not sure if their ceramic bearings are that good..
If it is in China, it will be even crazier. You can customize every detail, and it is very cheap. I ordered a set of wheels with sapim cxray front wheel and carbon fiber spokes on the rear wheel, Toray t800, equipped with a Chinese copy of the dtswiss hub, for a total of only $350, including two free tuning services after purchase (if the wheel deflects due to a fall or collision). You can also choose the weaving method, surface texture, brake strip material, everything is customizable, you only need to spend a little money to get something unique. The seller also told me that this is the first time he has encountered a request for different front and rear spokes lol. Because I think the front wheel does not bear the power and the shock absorption at the arm is more important, so I use steel spokes... You can use the consolidated shipping service, wait for a month to be delivered to the EU, and it costs about $50 including tax.just like i did
The cross section in the lateral direction is way smaller but you need it because of the moment of inertia in that direction. A rectangular shape for example with double the height got an aight times greater moment of inertia in that direction. The traditional spokes have a much bigger cross section (not one spoke but the complete wheel itself), so its very hard to compansate this with better matirial. Beacuse aight time stiffer materal is not easy to get. In that case its not an rectangal right, i only want to demonstrate the issure with a smaller crosds section
Before I watched the video I was like, "well Alex is a pro so I trust his judgement" but then I saw you pulling it to the side 😳. Yeah you know your stuff 🥖🥖🥖🥖
I think the lack of lateral stiffness is caused by the carbon layout more than the geometry of the wheel. It is difficult to judge from pictures but I think the fibres are layed up in a radial pattern, from the hub to the rim, this will produce a very stiff wheel radially and vertically but a very weak wheel laterally.
It’s a pity that GCN are such shills. I mean there is a lot of fun content there, and some really good info for new riders, but you just trust any sort of review that they do. Their videos should come with a product placement warning… Good on you Luke for keeping them honest!
If you were Time Trialing. You would run a solid spoke front wheel and a full disk rear wheel. As this would be a faster setup. People who ran front and rear solid spoke wheels. Do it because they like the looks of solid wheels and want to be different. How often do you see solid wheels or road bikes? I’ve only seen one this year at my local Car Free Sundays loop.
Hey guys, do you have any recommendations for battery-powered pressure washers for cleaning bikes? I'm looking for a handy device for a city apartment without a garden
At first glance i could tell that the design had inherent flex, even at a heavier 1600 gram+ weight. I rode a pair of Spinergy carbon 26" wheels on my hardtail mtb nearly 30 years ago.... 4 pairs of opposing large fat bladed spokes. * after a minor crash a carbon rim buckled and subsequently i gave the $2000 wheelset to a friend for free. The Spinergy's were stiff, but a lot heavier than my triple butted spoked White Industries hub/Mavic ceramic coated rim race wheels. As pretty and as aero as these Elite wheels are, i personally wouldnt spend the money unless it was for purely asthetic reasons. And a number of people in the past have said to me 'Your so Vain'. So yeh, they might look nice on the old team blue Cannondale.
Lateral stiffness is easy to measure. Mount the wheel horizontally, then hang a weight off of it and measure the deflection. If you don't have a jig just lay the bike on its side on a table.
0:33 If you are sent something for free and you say something too negative they probably won’t send you anything again for free. Then you won’t benefit financially from the views on that next product. So even when something is free you have (unfortunately) a financial incentive to speak kindly of the product. (Especially if this is your full time job.)
Reminds me of my tuff bmx wheels on my bmx as a kid. They look cool but I think they're too stiff and you want some lateral movement when you corner but that is frankly bizarre. Nice for TT. I think it was Alex Dowsett that trialled the 5 spoked wheelset and he found the ride not to his liking

Because I think the front wheel does not bear the power and the shock absorption at the arm is more important, so I use steel spokes...
You can use the consolidated shipping service, wait for a month to be delivered to the EU, and it costs about $50 including tax.just like i did
Another extraordinary episode. Thank you for your content . Cheers 🎉🍻
Awesome video as always!
Great review 👏 this is type of details you don't get regular advert type reviews 👍 ❤ 🥖🥖
Anybody know what those chainrings are? I'm looking to replace my cannondale spiderings and love the design but don't love the price!
Nice video, Does the wheel touch the frame during sprinting?
Superlative vid, as always! Always superior to the lacklustre GCN.
honesty is the hallmark of good journalism.
As always Luke, a very informative video. I myself have a set of elite wheels and I love them. 🥖🥖🥖
Love to see this, the wheels look cool which is honestly their main selling point, but quite crap from gcn to just repeat the marketing blurb! 🥖
Before I watched the video I was like, "well Alex is a pro so I trust his judgement" but then I saw you pulling it to the side 😳. Yeah you know your stuff 🥖🥖🥖🥖
What you could do to measure the firce is to somehow place a scale under your thumbs as you pull the wheel towards the fork.
Wow that is super flexy!!! Would not have guessed that.
Challenging GCN is a brilliant idea. Smart lad 👍
Nice review and explanation of wheel stiffness. Cool wheels, but I'm not sure I would like them for any kind of climbing. 🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖
Lateral stiffness is easy to measure. Mount the wheel horizontally, then hang a weight off of it and measure the deflection.
If you don't have a jig just lay the bike on its side on a table.
PT will be all over it for his own videos.
Nice video trace. That is crazy flex!!
Dear Mr Trace. What are the best wheels you can get on a budget that's both durable but also quite cool and fancy?
