I saw this movie as a kid in a downtown San Francisco movie theater when it was first released and was thoroughly enchanted by it. The Dancing Princess was my favorite part of the film. We bought the hardcover program in the lobby, and a family friend bought us the 33 LP record that had a narrator and audio of some of the key scenes whuch we played endlessly. The film never aired on the big TV networks. I stumbled upon it decades later when it aired on a local TV station one Saturday afternoon which must have been fate. They had managed to technically merge those 3 Cinerama panels into one. Unfortunately I tuned in after the film had already started. I would love to see the entire movie again, preferably in a theater. Watching this clip 62 years later is so heartwarming. It is still as lovely and romantic as ever. ❤ As a young adult I visit Neuschwanstein, the Bavarian castle where scenes were filmed. It was so cool to be there and remember the Dancing Princess running out of the castle to dance the night away.
This version of the Brothers Grimm Fairytale is MUCH MUCH better than the fairytale itself. Wish this had been a longer version and a movie in itself. The most romantic thing that Russ Tambyln has ever done!
@@teresabergamin2922 Hi Teresa. If you have a Blu Ray player, I strongly recommend you to get the Brothers Grimm Blu Ray version. It’s beautiful. From the reviews I read, they restored every second of the movie. Think of it as an early Christmas gift to yourself. You’ll come back here and thank me.
In 1968 WEST SIDE STORY was rereleased in theaters. My first glimpse of Russ, snapping his fingers and I was a goner. I’ve been in love with him ever since. I love getting to see musical numbers that are new to me. This one fits that description. And if you’ve never seen PEYTON PLACE, he’s adorable in that.
@@HassoBenSoba-The commenter wrote West side story was re-released in theaters in 1968.It was first released in 1961.I didn’t see it until it was first shown on television.
I've had a crush on Russ Tamblyn since I first saw him in "West Side Story" when they showed it on TV. It was either the late 60's or early 70's. I was 6 or 7 and the knife scene scared me! I cried at the end lol! And I was enchanted by Russ Tamblyn! I also saw him in "Tom Thumb" some time after. I think I was in my teens when I saw him in "Peyton Place" when it aired on tv. Norman in a bathing suit. Be still my fluttering heart! :)
Two questions...Why didnt Russ Tamblyn becaome a superstar...he was so much more than Riff and why dont studios make more stuff like this...people would wait in lines to see more people and let special effects...and Yvette ...I love you!!!
Was that really Yvette dancing....if so why didnt she ever dance in other movies? One of the true beauties in Hollywood of a time of innocence a long time ago!!!!
Mervrun, totally agree with you, those days are gone,in my eyes a special beauty, we're the same age fell for Yvette when Time Machine came out, always thought about her.
Mr. Tamblyn was not in the television version of 'Peyton Place', but the movie version, and was even nominated for an Oscar. He was also in 'The Boy With Green Hair' and 'Father of the Bride', released in 1948 and 1950 respectively.
I think most of us know the actors themselves are in their senior years. It's the fantasy of their film images most of us still admire and enjoy. Anything wrong with that?
faeryquene Right! In THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT Liza Minnelli’s line “Thank God for film” says it all. All these years later we can see all sorts of wonderful performances of every kind.
Saw one of her costumes recently housed at a place called Movie Madness in Portland, Oregon. It was her princess dress from The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm. It looked tiny! I read she was only 5 ft. 4 inch. and weighed 107 lbs. TINY INDEED and gorgeous too!!
I borrowed the VHS cassette from the same Movie Madness, and have been hankering forlornly for a version of this whimsical movie. I credit my roommate Sam with turning me on to the film. What fun!
I saw this film as well as the rest of the Cinerama trifecta--How The West Was Won, and of course, It's A Mad, Mad, Mad Mad World. (I guess this gives away my age, LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.) Peace be with you.
Yea those days of giant screens i remember them saw west was won knocked me out the buffulo stampede right over your head i was in the fifth grade as a field trip and saw mad mad in giant screen lawrenca of arabia giant screen thos e were the real days!!
Yes, I know Mr. Tamblyn wasn't in the television series 'Peyton Place' which starred Ryan O'Neal and Mia Farrow. I wasn't born yet when Peyton Place came to movie theatres in the late 1950's. I meant I watched Russ and Diane Varsi's Peyton Place when it has aired on television. I think it was the 1980's when I first saw the original Peyton Place (the movie version) that was aired on television. I've never liked the TV version of Peyton Place. I didn't like Return to Peyton Place either.
It's pretty obvious that this was originally filmed in 3D. The director keeps putting people and things in the foreground, while keeping whatever is in the background distant, in order to highlight the depth of field.
@lasktguy I know, but..what I want to say is..Yvette is so lovely that it doesn,t matter IF she dances like Cyd Charise. I would love to see her dancing in more movies, of course. I,m one of those guys who truly admires this lovely creatures, and u are right..Sharon was the loveliest. About Miss Weld....UP!!-I must admit I have never seen a movie with her. I will try!!-thanks. Matt- PS: my girlfriend is NOT blond!!-haha, but I love her truly.
@varon1979 well apparently the person I wrote my response to cared since he did ask why she didn't dance in more movies. And you're right, the blondes of the sixties were gorgeous. The one I loved that you didn't mention was Tuesday Weld. Sharon Tate was the most beautiful of all of them though.
@lasktguy WHO cares if she was a good dancer?- she is georgeous to look at, she moves so lovely..her hair is like yellow flowers under the sun. Yvette.....GOSH!!- I just wanna be Mr Tamblyn and take her to my .... home. (hehe...I,m shy...I wanna take her to my.. bedroom !!). YES!!- Those 60,s girls!!- Yvette, Carol Lynley, Michelle Phillips, Sharon Tate....I was born too late!!-in 1979, but I can see them here!!-Matt
i wanna be yvette. you can have russ, though he's a heck of a gymnast, and I dug him in HIgh School Confidential, playing the kid with the really bad attitude. Of course, you had to cut him some slack because Mamie Van Doren was his horny aunt who was always hitting on him.
mervrun, she was a good dancer but by no means a professional. Put her in a movie next to someone like Cyd Charise and you'd see wasn't anywhere near her in ability. That's probably why she didn't do more dancing in movies.

Me too cinarama. I also saw how thw west was won there
Didn't see anyone mention Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Russ Tamblyn as (red headed) Gideon. His best and funniest performance ever!!
Wasn't Gideon blonde?
He certainly could DANCE! Athletic...such a form....such a FORCE...
West Side, Brides, Tom Thumb and so much more.

Read his book that just came out. He was a big star and left Hollywood at his peak.
My grandparents taped this off the TV and I watched it obsessively on VHS as a kid. I feel old. ha
; The 'Cloak-of-invisibility' is as old as myths, and fairy-tales. Great dancing from Russ Tamblyn, as usual.
Gee, I was madly in love with Yvette when I was a kid..
I don't see anyone talking about the gorgeous Russ Tamblyn here. He was the bomb!
This is the second time I see Yvette dance on screen. First time I saw her dance was in Diamond Head. I was a kid then, but I remember.

Exquisite dance sequence.
yvette mimieux beautiful french father mexican mother good actress
I adore Yvette Minieux.
Thank you so much for posting this. I've been wanting to see this movie and this dance in particular!
Yvette was beyond adorable.
Gorgeous
Never knew that Yvette could dance I will always remember her in The Time Machine and The Hit Lady
May she rest in peace.

No, that was Dean Stockwell.
Even though he didn't dance in it, I really liked Russ Tamblyn in the early 90's TV show Twin Peaks.
I honestly never knew Yvette Mimieux was a dancer.
Me neither. Big surprise.
A true find! More, please!
The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm.
Awesome!
Oh Ivette Mimieux, so sweet and beautiful always
He was in both Cinerama movies, HTWWW & Brothers Grimm.

@htrrz I second the motion. Try recreating this on Dancing with the Stars. LOLOLOLOL.

Dancing with the Stars and 'Star makers' like American Idol are a joke.
YEP

Actually it was filmed in Cinerama. The film was projected on the screen by 3 projectors. If you look closely, you can see the 3 sections.
Yeah, Cinerama didn't last long. It was basically this and "How The West Was Won" and that's about it.
They call no-talent 'Reality' show people like Paris Hilton and the Kardashians 'Stars'. That says it all.
