Met a Norwegian man in Bangkok last year, who was with a Thai lady carer. He was almost totally blind. He explained a few years earlier he had been in Bali, drinking "whiskey" in a bar. He woke up in hospital a few days later, having gone into a coma from unknowingly drinking methanol laced drinks. He had unfortunately lost almost all of his eyesight from the affects of the spiked alcohol. It can also badly damage vital organs. Hopefully these young girls will fully recover without any serious health consequences.
@@timnewtontoday Was also in Laos the previous year for 4 months, and spent about 3 weeks in Vang Vieng. I was warned about not drinking the mixed spirit drinks from the popular backpacker bars along the river. So just stuck to the known brand name sealed container drinks. Seemed like a pretty lawless place. Only saw the police once in 3 weeks there.
Thai and Lao moonshine, known as **"เหล้าขาว" (Lao Khao)**, is a locally made spirit made by fermenting rice and distilling it to create alcohol. In most cases producers add ethanol (drinkable alcohol) as it's cheaper than fermenting expensive rice, however in some cases, unscrupulous producers have been known to add methanol-a cheaper but highly toxic alternative to ethanol-during production. In August, in Bangkok, 6 people died and many others were hospitalized due to mixing methanol into Lao khao. This was only in local Thai news as no young and beautiful western tourists were hurt.
I think they were not spiked :Methanol is often present in the initial portion of the distillate, known as the "foreshots." During distillation, methanol evaporates at a lower temperature than ethanol (the desired alcohol), so it comes out first. If the foreshots aren't discarded, methanol can end up in the final product, making it dangerous to consume. I think a (very costly) "mistake" has been made by the home brewer. 😢😢
@@grahamreid7017 No, the "distilling methods" involve the addition of alcohol from chemical suppliers. You're supposed to buy ethanol, but sometimes methanol gets used instead, or denatured alcohol. Denatured alcohol is ethanol with methanol added to it - it can't be drunk, so you don't have to pay alcohol taxes on it, which makes it cheap. Another name for it is "methylated spirit".
The alcohol poisoning problem is prevalent in Bali especially islands near Bali. Years ago I was offered whit spirits at a party there. I smelled it and thought no way. Im not into kero

"Spiked" with methanol is probably not the right way to say that... It implies a deliberate attempt to poison the customers... If anything, bootleg alcohol was switched in to real bottles or mixed with real alcohol to save money. Amateur bootleggers often cut corners or just don't know enough about methanol and the distilling process to avoid poisoning. (corrected ethanol/methanol)
Reminds me of a video I saw about using "Heet" (an inexpensive American anti-icing fuel additive) in a makeshift camp stove. Heet is methanol. Drinking it will poison you, but you can also absorb it through your skin. Also, not something you want around where food is being prepared.
700 millions phone calls, 1 millions sms, 11,201 phone numbers, 3 companies. Sounds like the telcos that enabled these scams made good money from the scammers. Maybe employees were involved? Maybe Police and politicians should find a way to claw back some of those profits.
tragic horrified by these poisonings. young people need to party and it seems these days it's getting harder and too expensive to do in there own country's where they have at the least the safety of hospitals nearby if anything like this happens and being far away from there families.just tragic.
Never drink those buckets. The only time I had serious problems was when I drank 2 of those buckets. I was lucky to be in Pai and some locals found my hotel key and brought me to my room in their car. The next day I couldn't remember anything. The hotel owner had to tell me the story. And no, I'm not a drunk. And I never blacked out before in my life.
Several years ago I remember going to a now closed bar on Walking Street in Pattaya and could easily smell "laughing gas" being pumped through the ac vents at regular interverals. I assume the police shut the bar down.
The hospitals in Laos are very poorly equipped. They'd be much better cared for in specialised Thailand hospitals, which are capable of the best possible nearby support available.
It sounds like you think this was done on purpose. Do you have evidence? Perhaps this was a case of negligence and ignorance on how alcohol is distilled. The presumption of innocence is important, although an investigation is warranted.

What never happens with cannabis? Strokes? Heart attacks?
