Molten steel from torpedo to ladle

Molten steel is transferred from the blast furnace to specific locations using "torpedo" cars which typically hold about 300 tonnes of liquid steel. A ladle is then placed underneath, the torpedo rotates about its long axis, resulting in transfer of steel. Ladles typically hold 150 tonnes, so each torpedo can fill to such containers. The ladle is then transferred to the furnaces on the right, where desulphurisation takes place. The steel is then ready for the secondary steel-making process. The T bottle railroad car hauls molten iron from the blast furnaces to the BOF plant, where it is mixed with scrap steel and Flux elements to make steel.

See "Iron Torpedoes on Ohio's Hottest Railroad" (~4 minute mark), which shows The Crow operating in Cleveland's industrial Flats for Cleveland Cliffs. Besides steel-making, the Flats was home to John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Refinery #1.
