I skated my friends board the other day who rides 56 mm with risers, I ride 52mm. He also rides an 8.75 with a much longer wheel base than I do, I ride an 8.25. I have to say, the timing, pop, and height of my ollies on his board felt fantastic. I didn't try any flip tricks but I was really weirded out by how good my ollies felt. It's really been messing with my head for the last couple of weeks, I need to try his board more.
Smallest wheel I know of are the sure grip fibers at 32 mm. They’re for rollerskates and have insane slippage on wood floors. Would probably get chewed up on anything else though
OJ wheels in the 1970's were developed for Downhill Skateboarding and some older style pool riding. I have an old 1970 Anybody's Skateboard Book and in there they mention OJ wheels as a newer brand only 5 years old though well tested.
Hey John, I just wanted to say that I love your content and that everytime I see a notification that says "John Hill has recently posted" I get a huge smile on my face. You really cheer me up man and I thank you for that! I would also like to know if you are a Christian or not? It would be interesting to know... Anyway, keep up the content and inspiring others with your amazing videos! 🎉😂🙌🙏
Tip from a hack that rides it all - if you have solid trucks and hard risers as your baseline for 53/54s you can go smaller while keeping some padding (swap to soft risers) or larger while keeping the same weight (swap to hollows/titanium) for wider boards and bigger wheels. Perhaps wheel wells and bones hard bushings. It means you can have a lot of "different" set ups but they're all pretty dialed in for the weight, sound, flick, effort, vibe etc you're locked in on. The thinner the board/trucks the less wheel bite you get, some sort of reverse leverage thing, so bigger wheels work better on thinner boards to avoid wheel bite.
Hey John. The wheels size 50-54mm would not make much of a difference when riding. It would matter when you lock it on rails or ledges. The noise problem mainly boils down to the durometer. Modern wheels are all 100A. The bigger wheel that you have should be 92-95A. Which is soft. The reason why there are no softer smaller sized wheels all boils down to wear. Small soft wheels will be worn off in a short time than harder wheels. In the 90s' there used to be 95A 125mm narrow wheels. But they wear off very easily.
I'd like to know how much weight the larger wheels added to the setup, had to be a big factor in adding difficulty to getting the board in the air and flicking it around.
I rode 77’s for a short time back in the 80’s on vert… 77’s and risers. Vert was ok, but street was nuts. My deck had to be like a foot off the ground 😂. Waaaay too big, but I could roll over boulders. I’ve been on 54’s ever since - currently slime balls vomits minis
48mm? Small?....Not even close.....I have "SML Wheels" @ 40mm. I consider 48mm not worth a review as you're not experiencing small wheels like small wheels were back in the day/ Actually small.
I find it matters most where the truck is, in relation to the height gain from a bigger wheel, since you have less usable tail and a steeper angle of pop with a very large wheel. Longboarders mitigate that by having the tail be flatter, already closer to the ground, so the timing and angle of the pop is similar to a shorter board with smaller wheels. TLDR if you scale up one thing, you have to scale everything else to match.
70mm are for cursing ruff streets. For some odd reason they make really wide. for me I do not do step hills on skate board since I am beginner. Also its dangerous to go fast on skate board because it unstable platform and you are stand up with no handle bars. If get speed wobble at speed usually the rider get throw off if they not good keep it in check.
havent heard of snot wheels? that is kinda surprising, i use Paralta dragons now but before that i was using snot wheels, specifically 56mm slime balls
rollerblades can have something called "antirocker", which is where the middle wheels are smaller to help getting into grinds, those are about 45mm 101a. they might not be the smallest but i bet they're the narrowest wheels you could put on a board also that plastic feel on the snots might be because they're 103a
i use 48mm formula 4's but they are 99a so they arnt that loud i feel like but on the flip side its been ages since iv used anything else so i really cant remember lol
70mm wheels are big for a skateboard, but roughly the average size for a longboard. I've seen downhill wheels around 105mm, but I wonder if you could fit those on a street deck. They're also very expensive.
The plastic feel comes from durometer, which I think those are 100A or 101A, which I honestly don't believe you didn't know. Those cruiser wheels are probably less than 70.
using cruiser wheels for skating very weird/odd size weight and higher off the ground i use my size 9 board now for cruising since i stopped skating but a few folks who skate asked if they can use it to do tricks on as a joke and said its heavy AF compared to there board but size 9 isn't a normal size 8.25 or 8.5 is normal or smaller
it would be better if the torus shape of the big wheels had a bevle or the edges grinded at enough an ang so that you can do more tricksand without over shooting a trick
Yeah Ive been riding some venom magnum 78s, 74a, and 70mm contact patch. Cruiser board. I've had so many people lose their minds on how big those wheels are, and then I'm like "they've shrunk in the five years I've been riding them"
@@longboardsp6705 I've got some orangatang Dad bods, I'm afraid to run them on my cruiser lest I slam on the way to work lol so I'm waiting till I go on vacation to test those out for a week
I'm glad you didn't quit skateboarding.
Same
same
Same
fr its kinda sad how he doesnt have more views and likes, he deserves alot more than what hes getting.
@Bariteen that's skateboarding in general right now I feel like. Wish they would make more tony hawk games to help boost skating again
Can you do softest vs hardest wheels? (Same size so it can be consistent testing) genuinely curious
yessss ive seen so many videos about size but not alot on wheels, especially when im learning power slides
Keep at it John Hill!! I never new you could skate a Tonka truck until today 😂😂

🎵no matter what I do🎵 9:00 🎵all I think about is you 🎵9:00 (Nelly - Dilemma)🎵
I don’t think your kingpin was catching at 9:05. The wheels are probably pinching the rail too much because of the softness.
I love the style of your videos i could watch them all day! thanks for still posting for us man.
I’m loving the consistency! Thanks John!

Great vid John!
John keep up the great work
Your content is awesome. Great ideas 👌
ngl john deserves way more views for the great content he puts out
love the vids! also looking for new skate shoes any recommendations? preferable with a lot of board feel
John “Degros” Hill?
Keep killing it my brother 🤙🤘
Dude has been on YT for almost a decade. I remember watching these vids when I was a fetus.
You've grown so much since then. We're all so proud 👏
Question, just in case you have time to answer. Is that Trex composite on the top of your box/bench? Does it last well when grinding it?
You really need to try the Sure-Grip Wood-wheels, made for rink roller skating, but would be awesome to see some board tricks on them :)

skating wheels go to 105 mm, dad bods
Hey bro did you make that bench/box yourself? If you did is there a video? Always fun watching you skate 🖖🏾
Fun video! Looks like you're having fun again!!

Nice kickflip noseslide big spin out

Thoughts on Brailltology?

Boardy cakes makes 38mm called magnums. Spencer nuzzy has a signature wheel with them too.
Sml "Really"s are pretty rad old-school 90s style 40 mm wheels.
Wish i knew how to back smith lol
Where did you buy that rail?
Made a custom cruiser using an 8.75 for that wider base and absolutely needed two sets of risers!
i use 48mm formula 4's but they are 99a so they arnt that loud i feel like but on the flip side its been ages since iv used anything else so i really cant remember lol
interesting video, I need it!!!

i have some 65mm clear kryptonics for cruising, they're pretty big
Where did u get the cat sticker at?
the perfect size to me is 54mm-56mm, and I like having one set of super soft wheel and one set of 99a formula fours.
Hope the dad life is treating you well John
Happy Tuesday
i got a bit of nostalgia from the intro music you used back in new york 🥹
Just a heads up that SML wheels make a 40mm wheel (and it's really fun).
The plastic feel comes from durometer, which I think those are 100A or 101A, which I honestly don't believe you didn't know. Those cruiser wheels are probably less than 70.
Good video
What size board is That ?
Hidecomply vibes from the small pink wheels (same brand?)

great job
Naw, dawg. Get you some gnarly Venom: 78mm Magnum race wheels. Hahaha
This spot looks so beautiful and interesting on camera
1:52 is a beat
Missed opportunity on a quality pun. Should’ve said in ‘wheel time’ @1:13
Can you do a Lurpiv truck review?
it would be better if the torus shape of the big wheels had a bevle or the edges grinded at enough an ang so that you can do more tricksand without over shooting a trick
15 mins gang
“Literally perfect” 😂😂😂
John look up boardy cakes they usually have 32s and most of there wheels under 48
This is basically just cruiser wheels verses trick wheels, should’ve got the 66mm spitfires that slide
can never go wrong with oj's, snot wheels are good but i prefer slimeballs
What model vans are those brother, they look good for the 30+ club😂😂
I prefer Powell peralta g-bones 64mm 97a 😁
Hubba used to have 42-48mm. I still use 50mm or less.
🔥
Makes me wonder how guys like Deawon can bang out legendary vid parts on whatever those 20mm looking Mf's are.
I wanted to see that nollie willie
I skate 90a 58s it is the perfect hybrid
I skate 58 dragons and there 👌🏻
Snot is the wheel company out of Heroin skateboards
So think Revive & Force
All then air bubbles
48mm ain’t the smallest, I had 38mm recently
Was gonna say. I've seen people make videos on 38mm wheels before
i wish this was with some bigger wheels that werent quite so ldp oriented. like with some otang durians or stimulus.
bralle?
get some dirt or grass tricks with them thangs
Iv literally have rode wheels down to the bearings before
Back in the day i briefly skated 42 mm wheels.
Hi jyohn bill😊
I ride 60mm 96a powell peraltas
Small wheels got you more tech, just needed the baggy pants
always appreciate how no matter how sweaty you get you're not one those guys who parades around shirtless lol
Yeah Ive been riding some venom magnum 78s, 74a, and 70mm contact patch. Cruiser board. I've had so many people lose their minds on how big those wheels are, and then I'm like "they've shrunk in the five years I've been riding them"
Yeah magnums are dope for the grip. Very competitive race wheel. But of you’re looking for bigger wheels check out seismic hoku or orangutang dad bods
Pantheon holy not seismic
@@longboardsp6705 I've got some orangatang Dad bods, I'm afraid to run them on my cruiser lest I slam on the way to work lol so I'm waiting till I go on vacation to test those out for a week
Magnum dong
You cannot do much grinds with 78a apertures.
I wonder if a soft 60mm wheel would be the best of both worlds.
i love taco tuesday
The oj thunder juice wheels are 75mm you ding dong.
Not the littlest, spitfire is makeing 43mm wheels
I can't really do anything with my big set up 70 mm I ghost pop so hard.
when they got rid of loh trucks they got rid of wheel size. you GET highs and you GET wheels.
Little wheels, big pants and vice versa. 😁
The other difference called softness or hardness of the wheels... which takes bigger importance in this scientific research.
Snot makes even smaller wheels than 48mm
i think snot is under the same umbrella as heroin skateboards
I’m
Riding 44mm wheels lol
