Lo irónico de este tipo de canciones es que, mientras más dolorosas, son más hermosas porque plasman la fragilidad de Tuomas a pesar de su exterior mayoritariamente estoico, él es un ser muy especial, y amo el hecho de que tanto Floor como Marko supieron evocar esa montaña rusa de emociones. Floor representa la tristeza, la angustia, la desesperación, Marko la frustración, la ira pura y casi vengativa (si escuchas Master Passion Greed, sabrás a lo que me refiero)
Obvio que lo anoto, me encanta la banda!!!
I really liked your interpretation, I think you touched many of Tomas's inner turmoil and gave them a correct intuitive interpretation.
Naked facts: In 2005, at the end of the last concert of the tour, in Helsinki, Nightwish fired Tarja with an open letter, which they then made public. In the following days, Tarja responded with another open letter. That polarized the band's fans, many of whom turned against Tuomas and Nightwish. It was the public scandal of the moment, and some echoes of this earthquake persist even now. The 2 open letters are available online. The situation was tense in the band, and from what I saw in the documentary "The day before tomorrow" the rupture was inevitable. Certainly, the gesture made public by the band in an inelegant manner contributed a lot to the intensity of the public reaction.
This song is a reflection of this event in the mirror of the artistic sensibility of Tuomas, a chatarsis, as you well noticed. The song is part of the next album after Tarja's departure, "Dark Passion Play". There are 2 more songs on this album that "ventilate" the resentments generated by this conflict, "Bye Bye Beautiful" (directed at Tarja) and "Master Passion Greed" (directed at Tarja's husband and manager, Marcelo Cabuli)
They were simply to Young, exept Marko, to really forsesee the Turmoil that Letter would bring up. But there is an Label, an Tourmanager, and Distributor, decades of Expirience, i still dont get, why they dont interviene in first Place. Only Conclusion for me ist: there is no bad Promotion, let them run into this , next Album would be an Big Money Maker- and so it was.

Excelente reacción..el tema es un "suicidio" de Tuomas..tantas veces lo pensó..y sus contenciones fueron Tony Kakko (de Sonata Artica, su gran amigo) y sus padres..luego dd separar a Tarja de comun acuerdo con el resto de NW.le tocó recibir gran parte de la crítica despiadada de muchisimos fans incluso de parte del gobierno dd Finlandia y en esa depresion pensó lo peor..y por suerte gracias a esa cintencion q mencione y el apoyo del resto de la banda optó x "suicidarse" en ese tema..EL PAPEL DE MADRE DE FLOOR ES ÚNICO..MARAVILLOSO EN INCLUSO LA MIRADA FINAL HACIA TUOMAS..RODEADO X EMPPU Y MARCO(lo notaste muy bien..ese final q se acercan a el para apoyarlo)..realmente entendiste perfectamente el tema..es un tema con mucho sentimiento ..podria decirse un tema con un TUOMAS abierto hacia todos..mpstrando su lado mas frágil...como dije en otros comentarios ..TUOMAS un músico completo..y complicado como todo perfeccionista...saludos
Como va a pensar en suicidarse por Dios 🤦.... entiendo que lo haga metafóricamente, y que se meta el gobierno.???,... no entiendo.... la vida es tan bella, yo vivo todas las mañanas con un dolor migrañoso que parece ese péndulo cortandome la cabeza y se me ha cruzado la idea de que vivir así no vale la pena... pero siempre hay motivos, miraba en mi móvil imágenes de lugares bellos, flores, paisajes, cosas q me alejen del dolor y los malos pensamientos ya q no podía alejarme de la oscuridad.... el amor también es duro... pero alguien como el, no puede pensar que es su único amor, si no funciono es que no era el verdadero, y si sintió todo eso por el falso, no tiene curiosidad de conocer qué sentirá por el verdadero? Si el no se da la oportunidad nunca llegara. Depende de el. 🤷 Le deseo una etapa de amor, paz y felicidad primero con el y luego seguro aparecerá su musa verdadera, de la cual no tendrá celos no nada porque en el amor no existe posesión solo amor. La salida de tarja es bastante controversial, porque cada lado tiene su propia explicación y luego están las habladurías, aquellas que inventan los fanáticos en base a sus opiniones, pero que no hay nada que lo demuestre realmente.
El punto es que tanto para Thoumas y para Tarja es un tema del cual no quieren hablar mucho, pero los obligan en cada maldita entrevista a soltar un poco la lengua... y durante los primeros años Tarja lo evitaba totalmente y thoumas tiraba venenitos, lastimosamente no supieron arreglar sus problemas como adultos que eran y nosotros los fans nunca sabremos a ciencia cierta quien tiene más la razón o cual es la verdad, pero después de tantos años siguen los acosos por ese problema. PERO hay un detrás de escenarios en el dvd del último concierto con tarja en el 2005, y honestamente ahí se ve lo muy deteriorado de la relación entre los chicos y ella, es triste y hay cosas que no comparto de ese dvd, como los chistes de mierda que hacia Marco cuando ella no estaba, o Jukka que parecía muy irritado y celoso.
O sea, ambos bandos hicieron y dijeron cosas hirientes, ellos no bajaron a tarja de diva en su expulsión, pero la gente que conoce a tarja personalmente no piensa lo mismo de ella, así que todo muy extraño. Y Anette que fue quien sustituyo a Tarja en su momento... fue a quien le toco lo peor de los fanáticos, la abucheaban, le insultaban en redes, siempre la denigraron, y lo gracioso es que los dos albuns más amados de NW hoy en día fueron sacados con Anette. XDxdxD. En fin, la hipocresía.
Cuando ya no estaba la empezaron a valorar, y esa salida también es muyyyy controversial, porque la echaron cuando estaba enferma e internada, por medio de una carta documento, lo mismo que hicieron con tarja, no las echaron de cara a cara ... y ya con todo lo anteriormente dicho, cada uno debe sacar sus propias conclusiones sobre ciertas cosas, como músicos NW la rompe, pero a veces en la vida personal, los músicos también son humanos, hacen y dicen cagadas. 🤷🏻♀️

Ella se iba a ir de todos modos a continuar su carrera solista, pero la despidieron con una carta pública justo después del show que viste del Fantasma de la Opera. Fue bastante fea la ruptura, muchas criticas de la prensa y fans pero lo importante es que ahora cada parte está bien por su lado. Nightwish con la mejor cantante que podían tener y Tarja haciendo la música que quiere. Pude estar en su show en Buenos Aires hace unas semanas, suena genial ella y la banda.
NW ya no toca más esta canción en vivo, porque segun dijo Tuomas es una etapa superada.
Si, me parece bien, "ayer ya paso, pero mañana es mucho"... eso me enseñaron mis hijos, la primer parte, la dijo el más grande un día que estaba mal por algo del día anterior y la ansiosa nena, porque no podía esperar a mañana para cumplir sus metas, así forme esa frase entre las dos, que me recuerda a vivir el hoy, porque nada es más importante, el pasado no podemos cambiarlo y mañana no sabemos si estamos.

El pendulo referencia el poema The pit and The pendulum de Edgar Alan Poe. Allí Poe está amarrado y hay un pendulo bajando poco a poco hasta cortarle la cabeza. Poe estaba sufriendo la muerte de su familia.

I was impressed how quickly and accurately you picked up on the story of the song. This song (specifically the live version from Wembley) is my favourite Nightwish song. You will also love the Greatest Show on Earth (live at Wembley, or at Tampere)..... another masterpiece!! Many will tell you to go with the Tampere version, but musically Wembley is the best version in my opinion.

Hello Marita.
The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is guilt for what happened, there is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen.
However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does.
The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly.

... ¿Por qué "se fue" (literalmente fue "echada") Tarja de la banda? Probablemente sea por la eternidad "la pregunta del millón". Considero que solo Tarja y Tuomas saben con seguridad lo que pasó entre ellos (desde siempre se ha conjeturado con que Tuomas estaba enamorado de Tarja y ese 'amor' no era correspondido ó que la cantante tenía previsto dedicarse a su carrera como cantante lírica a tiempo completo y que planeaba abandonar prontamente la banda; cuestión que Tuomas anticipó y la "despidió"); la declaración en una conferencia de prensa (por parte de Tarja) y el comunicado de prensa (por parte de Tuomas, el cual firman al pie el resto de los integrantes de la banda) de esa época son sólo demostraciones al "mundo exterior"; lo único seguro es que Nightwish sigue trascendiendo y evolucionando y Tarja está teniendo una interesante carrera solista y ambos en Argentina son LOCALES!!! "The poet and the pendulum" is from Anette's time. It was released on the album Dark Passion Play (2007), the group's sixth. According to Tuomas this song was the way he found to deal with the depression after Tarja's departure. The band received a lot of hatred from all over the world. They lost a lot of fans. I'm going to summarize the story for you to understand why people's reaction was so negative.
Tarja's resignation was a very dramatic episode. The relationship between her and the band had been bad for some time, so at the end of 2004 she decided to tell the band that she would leave. The idea was to record one last album and go on a farewell tour. She wanted to announce her decision to the public and prepare fans for the vocalist change, however, Tuomas convinced her not to do so at the time.
It turns out that, after that meeting, the band planned a public firing on the sly. They delivered a letter to Tarja at the end of the "End of an era" show and posted it on the band's website the next day. The band made several accusations against Tarja and her husband. It was a scandal.
In response, Tarja wrote a letter and held a press conference to respond better to the group's accusations. Her husband also spoke. He answered more than 150 questions from fans around the world and posted the answers on the internet.
Given the reports that were brought and other available records, including videos and documentaries, a large part of the fan base revolted against the band. Faced with criticism from different sides, Tuomas fell into a depression and wrote "The poet and the pendulum" as a way of dealing with the situation.
Some say that Tuomas suffered from unrequited love for Tarja. This feeling would have been the fuel for the composition of some songs. The question of Tuomas' love for Tarja is actually an old theory of fans. This theory was built even before Tarja's dismissal, and is based on old interviews and on the lyrics that Tuomas used to write.
The idea of the existence of unrequited love was strengthened when Marcelo himself (Tarja's husband) spoke about the subject in the responses he gave to fans. See these answers:

To cut a long story short, in October 2004 I needed to ask Tuomas to come to talk to Tarja and me in our hotel room in the middle of the tour.
Even though he knows Tarja many years before me, he never could achieve his goal.

I needed to tell him that there was no reason to keep on trying any longer, since I married her.
As usual he didn't speak much, but he said to me that nobody was going to be able to stop his love for Tarja.
After this unhappy meeting, everything changed.
The guy that until then said in interviews that, without Tarja, that would be the end of Nightwish, changed his message into: Nightwish is my band, my music, my lyrics, the scenery of my soul.

Tarja never changed her thoughts about her position in the band.
She has never mentioned that Nightwish was her band or that she was more important than the other band members.
Nightwish lyrics are Tuomas' life diary, as it has been said. With this new information that I am sharing with you, please check once again some of them. We all can find amazing songs with beautiful lyrics full of poetry. Their meaning won't remain that uncertain any longer.

Tarja never had any romance nor was ever in love with him.
I have received many questions accusing Tuomas of being jealous, envious, bitter and of being in love. I have no interest in making any judgement about those things and people's feelings.
Other people than Tuomas also told me how much they love Tarja. There are many different levels of love and I have no problems with any of them as long as reasonable limits are not exceeded.
Is funny if you carefully check the cover of End of an Era (that Tarja didn't propose, but accepted).
You will find what seems to be an angel (Tarja's nickname in the official forum of her web page) and a demon or god. Only these two characters dominate the scene. I couldn't find any other characters in the cover at all.
They are standing facing away from each other.
Between them there is turmoil and a strong light, whether striking into or coming out of a cracked heart.
It is definitely not Tarja's heart. Her heart is very healthy and full of love, because she has always listened to it (instead of me); as Tuomas advised her to do in the open letter.
The title of the scene is "Nightwish - End of an Era".

I think we will never know the real motives. Motives rest in Tuomas, some close people and band members' hearts. Seems there has been at least very strong motives to kick out Tarja, specially the way they did it.
Some of them might be the mentioned cultural differences that band members have in their minds and hearts with me, the non corresponded love from Tuomas to Tarja, Tarja's values that didn't match Tuomas and Tarja's maturity that didn't match Tuomas and the others, not compatible life styles between band members, different concept of friendship and responsibilities that comes with it, different approach to record business, the obvious problem to communicate within the band; just to name a few."
The depression itself and the song "The poet and the pendulum" can, in theory, be read as a reflection of this love drama. Regardless of whether this theory about Tuomas is true or not, the fact is that bringing internal issues to the public was the worst choice. A lot of the band's past has been brought up and no one has come out unscathed. Because of the scandal, Tarja lost some fans and contracts for her solo career. On the other hand, the band also lost fans and had little-known events brought to a wider audience. For example, Tarja suffered an attempted sexual abuse in the middle of a concert in Guadalajara in 2000.
At the time, the band continued playing as if nothing had happened, even after Tarja left the stage along with the criminal and the security guards. There are videos of the episode here on TH-cam. Later, after Tarja left, the band itself mentioned the event in its official biography.
The way the band decided to fire Tarja and the facts of the past that were brought to public knowledge infuriated many fans. To get a sense of how big the fan base was in the past, look at the number of views of the first videos with Anette ("Bye, bye, beautiful" and "Amaranth"). These numbers are representative of the fan base situation at the end of Tarja's period and beginning of Anette.
The first album with Anette was the band's first album ever released with TH-cam ever running. We were all curious to know who the new singer was and what she sounded like. Unfortunately Anette didn't please a large part of the original fan base, which also contributed to the band losing more fans. Me gusta ver como los músicos y artistas analizan este tipo de piezas ya que le dan un sentido mas practico y digerible ya que entienden de poesía, metáforas, epítetos y figuras literarias, esa analogía del péndulo y sentimientos o contradicciones me encanto, abrazos, esta es una composición escrita en sentido inverso ósea los sucesos se comienzan a contar desde el final al inicio. Tuomas la escribió luego de que tarja fue despedida por problemas con Toumas y los demás que dejaron a este con depresión, por eso Empu el guitarrista se acerca en la parte inicial como preguntando si se sentía bien y Marko por igual se solidariza y se acercan ambos al final.Me gustaría que trataras con A Song of Myself , live at Wacken 2013 o 7 days to the Wolves en este mismo concierto. abrazos!

Hola, me gusta mucho como reaccionas y analisas. Seria interesante que escuches lo nuevo de Nighwish, en especial su último video clip. Es fantástico ❤❤❤
La traducción al español es malísima porque en la parte de " no puedo llorar porque el hombro llora más" es una metáfora a que si él muere, los fans que se apoyan en su hombro sufrirán más. Y en la última parte, de Mother and Father, es "encuentra tu orilla", no "tu playa". Más allá de quién haya traducido tan mal, amé tu reacción y análisis casi psicoanalítico del alma de Tuomas. Como bien dice la letra, y tan bien resaltaste, él tiene los océanos dentro, toda la belleza de un compositor incomparable. Se comentaba que esa última parte se la escribió su madre al verlo deprimido por todo lo que estaba ocurriendo en la banda y la expulsión de Tarja. Es el Mozart del metal realmente. Me suscribo!

Para mí, Tuomas es un Beethoven del siglo XX. Así, sin complejos. Y lo que les pasó para la ruptura artística, pues... muy jóvenes, muy finlandeses, el éxito los atropelló, muchos focos sobre ellos constantemente y muy poca experiencia. Pero eso fue en 2005 y ha pasado mucho tiempo, han madurado y como dice el cuento... fueron perdices y comieron felices.
