A few things: (1) This amp does not run hot. Even after hours of use. (2) Minor correction to what was said early in the video: The 550 can power two pairs (4) of speakers at once. Not 8. I slipped up as I was thinking about the next thing to say. :D Power output will remain the same so long as all of the speakers are 8 ohms or higher (as the amp will see a collective impedance of 4 ohms). (3) Another minor correction: The circuit that Luxman was responsible for pertains to *Global* Negative Feedback. Cheers!

After the shootout, both Luxman and Yamaha will donate their respective stacks for thee to keep and cherish. Thy shalt be known to all these youtube peasants as the ultimate stacklord thereafter. This integrated amp has every feature that disappeared from my favorite 1970's equipment (ie. My Harmon-Kardon 930). Loudness! Mono! Low filter! A real tape monitor circuit and pre-out/main ins! Clicking switches! The only thing it's missing is reverse stereo. After watching this review, this amp is exactly what I want to make my life complete. Too bad that it's about $4,500 more than I can afford. Thank you for your great review of my new fantasy.

Found the last L-590 axII dealer Demo in the Country 🇨🇦 and luckily it was in my home town. Been into audio for over 40+ years. I was getting tired of the in my face 200 watt McIntosh gear. Ya I had to step up for the Luxman but this I’m sure will be my last intergraded. I heard it for 30 mins at the dealer and was hard pressed to keep the smile off my face. As you can imagine I’ve heard a ton of gear and this sure is a piece I’m going to adore. I’m a big vinyl guy so having the MC/MM phono stage allows me to sell off my phono preamp as well. Win Win.

    Hey Sean,
Great Video as usual, it makes me remember my old Luxman integrated Amp. That unit was from the early 80’s and was rated at 50 watts into 8 ohms. It was the unit with the gold and glass retractable faceplate. Man oh man it would rock the house and sounded Beautiful. The unit was built like a Tank. I had it for years right up til my divorce in which my ex took it as part of the settlement. I especially remember the day my buddy brought over his Cerwin Vegas D9’s and when the bass hit it blew the speaker covers across the room literally. My buddy had a Sony amp that was rated at 120 watts into 8 ohms and his amps couldn’t blow the covers off his Speakers. From that point on he has owned Luxman equipment. My long drawn out point is that a true 20 watts is more than enough power. Keep up the Great Work Buddy.

    Great review Sean.
I recently acquired the bigger brother (590 AXII) and found your description of sound to accurately match my experience. I came from EL34 mono block amplifiers and found the Luxman far more detailed with a bit more sparkle and tighter bass.
I have 91dB, 4 ohm speakers and this amp has more than enough power for my listening requirements - could probably run the 550 in myself system just as well.
For those interested the phono stage (I think it is the same in both models) is very good. I am running a Dynavector XX-2 and I compared with my existing phono stage (Dynavector P75) - the internal one is much better. Admittedly the 100 ohm landing is not adjustable and suits my cartridge.

Minor point to your presentation. Luxman didn't invent negative feedback. Harold Black submitted a patent in 1928. Harry Nyquist while working for AT&T, later Bell Labs, developed the idea even further. He also worked with Hendrik Bode to develop circuits using feefback in the 1930's.

Cool beans. 1935 topology with 1930's negative feedback (invented by Harold Stephen Black at Bell Laboratories in 1927, patented in 1937, not by Luxman). 1960's controls. 1970's solid state topology. Very pretty VU meters (with 1980's expanded range). E-I transformer, which is known to leak a lot more magnetic field than toroidals, but in small editions are much easier to wind and less costly to make in small runs.
Yeah, I would love to hear it with an nice pair of Klipsch's or JBL's at the 'one-Watt plus crescendos' level. Really love to. Class A puts the minute details of music signals right in the most linear part of the output devices' operating curve -- the sweet spot. I'd like to hear it compared to a Nelson Pass comparable design, just for shits and giggles. Should go well in a book-lined library with hassock, pipe, and slippers.
Has "wall of sound" changed definition since the Phil Spector days in the 60's? Don't pay attention to my comments. I'm that 'armchair engineer' that knows nothing about hifi marketing nor cares much for nostalgia. I saw lots of nostalgic hardware when it was the best we had, but I don't think that hifi is anywhere near the best it can get. It really does sound fake.

The 2 are on my list, but unfortunately i won't get the opportunity to have a home demo on either.
If anybody has some insight on this, It would be most appreciated.

Luxman has always made some great stuff and you are not the only one who has commented on how powerful 20 watts can sound. I like to remind folks it's is class a watts that double into 4 ohms and that luxman like others such as macintosh and pass labs are conservative with their ratings. Case in point the pass labs xa25 amplifier way out performed it's specs when stereophile did it's testing on it. It would be a intersting compassion with one of pass labs lower integrates as well. They used to do a 30 watt class a integrated that was really good years back. Not as many of the bells and whistles as the luxman though. When you get into this sorta league their all good. Just going to come down to preference for sound, synergy with your system and features. The scary thing is that that luxman sound gets better when you step up to their separates (preamp and amplifiers). I think they also make a related model but it's class ab instead of class a. Looking for to future reviews of accuphase. Thanks!

Pricewise, it’s in between the 2 with a more higher end look than the l-505. Could be the sweet spot. Just need to track one down as it seems they are hard to get in Europe.

Tape Monitor? Record in and out? Loudness? Subsonic filter? Balance and Mono controls? Feels like I slipped into the Hot Tub Time Machine back to 1985 when I was selling Luxman that could be best described as ‘mid fi’ competing with the likes of Harmon Kardon. I thought that company was long gone. Obviously a niche target market. Hope they survive.

Doesn't surprise me. Tube gear has a different sound all-together, and as I understand it, the Lux Class A/B stuff is more analytical/lean sounding than the Class-A stuff, which is already quite honest to begin with.

Seriously considering purchasing this amplifier with Klipsch Cornwall IV and this video is definitely pushing me in that direction even more! I want to try tube integrated amplifiers but after reading a review from Steve Huff about trading in his beloved line magnetic 219 i a for the luxman I have second thoughts. Wish I could hear Raven osprey with matching Celeste speakers versus luxman with Cornwall.

  • @tywoodruff8578
    @tywoodruff8578 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Sean, curious if you’re still considering doing the separate Luxman/Cornwall video? I’m on a search for an amp to pair with vintage Klipsch speakers (1980 La Scala or 1978 Heresy). Everything I hear/read suggests tubes, so I’ve looked at many of the usual suspects in my price range (Primaluna, Rogue, Luxman SQ-N150, Leben, Cary) as well as a couple that are probably out of the budget new but maybe not used (McIntosh, Audio Research). Considered Willsenton and Cayin, but really prefer to buy from a local brick and mortar store.
All that being said, I keep getting drawn back to solid state, in particular the Luxman L550 and Accuphase E-280. Thus why I’d love to hear your detailed thoughts on the Luxman/Cornwall pairing. Sounds like these may be two of the better SS options for speakers from the Heritage lineup.
Anyway, I’m really curious…ignoring what I’ve been looking at, if you had a pair of vintage La Scalas or Heresys and headed out the door to buy an amp, what would you choose?
BTW…I’ll be mainly listening to vinyl and streaming, with a bit of CD/SACD mixed in.
    Thanks!
