The best ASL by far in recent memory. Royal was no ordinary macro Terran. He brought an innovative and aggressive style that made for extremely fun matches in all match ups. Good to see BW going strong after all these years. Probably the best Remaster of all time.
As a gig musician, I can tell you that this performance, in all likelihood, did not "blow the budget". Obviously I can't say for certain, but something like this is actually fairly minimalist. If I purchased a ticket for this event, I would've been really happy that they included this as part of the show. Personally I thought it was really well done and a nice touch. Also you have to consider that this is in Korea, so the cultural significance would arguably be much greater for that audience than for us non-Koreans.
This intro blew me away! Never in my wildest dreams would I have believed that I'd see a live concert for Starcraft with instruments I've never seen before. Amazing!
As someone who had to study these sort of musical instruments for my degree (I'm a composition graduate), I am amazed as to how these performers mixed the traditional with the modern. Brilliantly mindblowing.

What an insane finals. That game 4 on Odyssey was definitely Flash-esque "I am going to *will* a victory out of this game". Actually crazy! Best TvT series I've seen in a loooong time! New fan of the winner right here!
Really looking forward to Flashs return and if he will play random or terran. Nevertheless there was no map here without some hickups from at least one player, so if a perfect Flash is going to return, both of them will still have work to do! But as for terran play, I think no one ever came so close to God like Royal in that game! In that map he would have beaten Last even!

Watched Broodwar on my trip to Korea in 2007 and fell in love with the community. Remember paying GomTV directly in late 2000's to watch it on their custom software for gomtv. So sad to see blizzard have screwed it so hard with sc2. But, the community has Broodwar always.
I was surprised when Tasteless said he's never seen the hand blowing technique before. I see Queen do it all the time on his player cam WHILE he's playing, usually in the first 5 minutes. Besides fantastic game I'm so happy for the champion. I was cheering for him since ro4 and i've noticed his extraordinary way of playing a long time ago. Thanks to Artosis and Tasteless. You two makes this game so much more enjoyable to watch for me. I've been binge watching ASL season 7 to 14 in order and I absolutely love it.
For anyone wondering why bunkers don't hit the floating Barracks is simply because bunkers don't have holes on its top for the Marines to fire. Nice attention to detail that actually makes sense :^) Kidding aside, it probably has something to do with the coding like the value of the effective range of the bunker.
We all know Flash is the Goat. His unit micro is in a class of its own. But Royal showed me some things I've never seen from Flash. The early aggression and relentless pressure from every direction was beautiful to watch. He puts his opponent onto the back foot immediately, and never lets them regain their footing. After the early game, Royal was able to transition into a steady stream of low risk, high reward pinpoint attacks with a dropship or two, a vulture run-by, a couple tanks, etc. If Rush defends perfectly, it's not a big loss for Royal, but if Rush makes a mistake his position gets compromised, he loses an expansion, or he loses a bunch of SCVs. Rush spent the entire match putting out fires, and rarely had an opportunity to go on the offensive. Royal understands that it takes more APM, and units to put out a fire than it does to start one.
Hmm, just when you thought this game couldn’t get any better they go and do a cover on the music like that .. yeah this is the best game ever made. Keep it up guys
Genuinely curious, what do you like more about broodwar vs SC2? Is it mostly nostalgia and what you got used to or is it more than that and if so, what is it specifically? I'm thinking of getting more into broodwar but it feels so stiff and stubborn compared to SC2 so I would be interested in what makes it better to you.
@@bingobangini Well as a programmer and graphic designer, and musician, i would say the graphic style makes the game more distinguishable and in remastered it was kept. Also the sould design and overal equalisation and choice of sounds is much better in broodwar. e.g. : ratatata of the marine guns in sc2, the muffed siege tank shots also suck in sc2. Load up broodwar and compare the sounds : much more vibrant and appropriate. The sound design in sc2 feels too polished and thin. Also, in comparison, the 3d engine is not fit for an rts, everything is a bunch of somewhat antialiased polygons, instead of being properly rendered, although in fixed angle, sprites. So mostly the artistic direction of both sounds and graphics alongside the game mechanics. broodwar is somuch better than sc2, which sadly is not necessarily a 'cash grab' but let's just say it was not done by the same team, with the same attention to detail and love of the product. Much akin to the original starwars, versus the sequels/prequels. my 2 cents. edit typos

Both the legibiliy and the aesthetics of the sound and visual design are more distinctive but also more legible and clearly indicate what is happening in game from a player and spectator perspective. But more importantly, the game design is just so much better in terms of balancing racial uniqueness with balance. The dynamics and interplay between units, strategy, micro, macro is just so perfect. Compared to SC2 which is just incredibly volatile economically, has much less racial/unit discinction. I would add a few as well that most BW fans will bring up: maps have a bigger impact on the game since high ground means so much more, and giant swaths of the map (xel naga) don't give a huge advantage and prevent comeback opportunities. FInally, unit pathing and spacing which granted can be stiff and stubborn like you say, is a feature as much as a bug. It lends the game a more realistic feel and a more epic scale to not have perfectly dense deathballs. It is also a huge factor in balancing AOE from direct damage and allows for more variance and interest and 'OPness without being OP' of AOE units.

Watching this really makes me miss the starcraft 2 spectator client. Theres so many little things like production and worker count and stuff I wish I could see to understand exactly HOW Royal is winning these games. Instead we (and even tastosis) don't really have a clear picture on exactly what Royal's doing and why he's getting ahead and taking these games.
The winner really deserved it. Really outclassing it was crazy to see that in a mirror match. I'll be back here still hoping some season my favorites of each race can manage to win an ASL.
Quick question. At the beginning of matches. The crowd chants two separate slogans. First my a male then female. For an American it sounds like 2, 4 ,6, 8, who do we appreciate. Kinda of like a sports or cheering chant. What are they saying? Is it similar? Curious thx!
They are saying "1, 2, 3. (Player's name), fighting!" The shoutings have been a longtime tradition since early days of SC leagues. I remember hearing them as early as in 2000 if memories serve right

While those have been a really great finals, there is a bit of bitterness in how you guys run things. Anyone who watches a bit of broodwar videos has yt recommendations floating around on the right or on the main feed, and during this ASL i got spoiled twice on who got to play specific matches in ro8 and ro4 because Scan's live videos made their way there. I think a lot of fans would really prefer if you were to cast those games live, adding fluff like better editing and translations later for VOD. All that aside, great season and great casting, hope i will one day see an ASL match as live audience.
I would love it so much if AfreecaTV lets you guys stream cast in GSL. Most games dont really need to be in person maybe fly in a few times a year for the finals/semi-finals. The rest dont need to be in person casted tbh. This cast is evidence of that. The back and forth from these great friends is just unmatched.
I'm late watching this. The music at the beginning was awesome. The games are great. Rush is more traditional in his approach. It is as if he wants the game to go on later stages where we'll see cruisers. He also seems to be nervous despite previously getting in the finals two times. Rush also seems unable to play island map style, that is drop reliant. On the other hand, Royal is more out of the box, plays more mind games, and more aggressive. He also seems more prepared and relaxed. He also love adding wraith and dropships. I think these are the reasons he won. In all of Royal's wins, there were moments where Rush could have won. However, Rush seems to be waiting for a clear cut advantage before making a decisive move.
Thanks again Tastosis for keep bringing to western viewers the most competitive tournament of SC-R.. The opening show was awesome! I really enjoyed it! And as always Tastosis cast is the best thing in the world, couldn't live without they casting StarCraft Remastered or StarCraft II.. Besides all the good thing, I'm so disappointed and sad to see the Studio with that many empty seats! I mean, this is the most important match of the greatest SC Tournament.. Anyway, casters and production was top notch, the same top level that the fans deserve, as always! Thanks AfreecaTV for everything! Regarding old games still alive, Doom, though primarily through its thriving modding scene. Team Fortress 2 has been around for 15 years. Melee, as mentioned. League and Dota have been around for a while.
I have no clue if we were watching a different game than what Tastosis was watching for Game 4 but they were reading it the wrong the whole time. Royal was up a base the entire game except for like 30 seconds when he finally had to evacuate the 12oclock base. Rush had a good tank line for a little bit but he wasn't doing anything and Royal was active over the entire map stopping Rush's third and raising hell all over the map. How on Earth is Artosis surprised and shocked at what happened? I'm extremely confused.
1999, 2001 and 2000 (mod made in '99 but the retail version came out in '00) respectively. I would also add a 1v1 arena shooter like Quake 3 (funnily enough - also made in 1999) to the mix and you could have a legit worldwide sport circuit going on.. shame it's the MOBAs and franchise leagues that are dominating right now but oh well.. lowest common denominator is what makes the most $$$ I guess.
what a SICK SEASON! man these games were great. Anyone saying TvT is boring gotta get their mind right. Those were some great tactical plays! 3rd place match, now that was the only sleeper set of games ZvZ is the worse.

While those have been a really great finals, there is a bit of bitterness in how you guys run things. Anyone who watches a bit of broodwar videos has yt recommendations floating around on the right or on the main feed, and during this ASL i got spoiled twice on who got to play specific matches in ro8 and ro4 because Scan's live videos made their way there. I think a lot of fans would really prefer if you were to cast those games live, adding fluff like better editing and translations later for VOD. All that aside, great season and great casting, hope i will one day see an ASL match as live audience.

I would love it so much if AfreecaTV lets you guys stream cast in GSL. Most games dont really need to be in person maybe fly in a few times a year for the finals/semi-finals. The rest dont need to be in person casted tbh. This cast is evidence of that. The back and forth from these great friends is just unmatched.
I'm late watching this. The music at the beginning was awesome. The games are great. Rush is more traditional in his approach. It is as if he wants the game to go on later stages where we'll see cruisers. He also seems to be nervous despite previously getting in the finals two times. Rush also seems unable to play island map style, that is drop reliant. On the other hand, Royal is more out of the box, plays more mind games, and more aggressive. He also seems more prepared and relaxed. He also love adding wraith and dropships. I think these are the reasons he won. In all of Royal's wins, there were moments where Rush could have won. However, Rush seems to be waiting for a clear cut advantage before making a decisive move.

Thanks again Tastosis for keep bringing to western viewers the most competitive tournament of SC-R.. The opening show was awesome! I really enjoyed it! And as always Tastosis cast is the best thing in the world, couldn't live without they casting StarCraft Remastered or StarCraft II.. Besides all the good thing, I'm so disappointed and sad to see the Studio with that many empty seats! I mean, this is the most important match of the greatest SC Tournament.. Anyway, casters and production was top notch, the same top level that the fans deserve, as always! Thanks AfreecaTV for everything! And thanks Tastosis and crew for continuously bringing all ASL content to the English audience! I love you guys!

Regarding old games still alive, Doom, though primarily through its thriving modding scene. Team Fortress 2 has been around for 15 years. Melee, as mentioned. League and Dota have been around for a while.

I have no clue if we were watching a different game than what Tastosis was watching for Game 4 but they were reading it the wrong the whole time. Royal was up a base the entire game except for like 30 seconds when he finally had to evacuate the 12oclock base. Rush had a good tank line for a little bit but he wasn't doing anything and Royal was active over the entire map stopping Rush's third and raising hell all over the map. How on Earth is Artosis surprised and shocked at what happened? I'm extremely confused.

Neo Arkanoid has been my favorite match to watch. Makes builds less predictable and the games more interesting as an observer.

Brood War, Melee, and Counter-Strike, the holy trinity of competitive multiplayer games. All released in 1999ish. :)
1999, 2001 and 2000 (mod made in '99 but the retail version came out in '00) respectively. I would also add a 1v1 arena shooter like Quake 3 (funnily enough - also made in 1999) to the mix and you could have a legit worldwide sport circuit going on.. shame it's the MOBAs and franchise leagues that are dominating right now but oh well.. lowest common denominator is what makes the most $$$ I guess.

what a SICK SEASON! man these games were great. Anyone saying TvT is boring gotta get their mind right. Those were some great tactical plays! 3rd place match, now that was the only sleeper set of games ZvZ is the worse.
They need to play the terrain music. That is the best soundtrack for a game by FAR. Terran BGM is so damn good.
Mark my words, one day Barracks will also get ASL championship. Royal was not suprise for me this ASL i was so sure he could win.

Melee is bigger than sc bw. Both games are legendary and nothing will ever replace them.
