  • If you like tuning low or simply prefer a deeper, more present fundamental tone from your toms, you should absolutely consider using thicker-than-standard reso heads. In this episode we’ll demonstrate why a 12mil reso can be more beneficial than a 10mil reso (the standard) due to simple physics.

    I appreciate this channel.
    I always listen while I am waking up and feel like I learn so much that I would have never asked.
    I am tired of drummers using fake drums and over processed sounds.
    You guys understand the daily drummer who just wants to have fun and sound good.
    Do an episode of stock head vs remo vs evans?

    That smile at 1:17 haha when you know that thuddy goodness of a thick reso head! Honestly, loved this video. They are great for metal, I’ve found with the reso slightly tighter than the batter in the midrange it’s real nice for the low tunings. I use an EC2 batter and G2 reso, ultimate thiccness. 😂

    I’ve been using G14’s as reso for years on my toms (RIP Evans G14’s) for all of the reasons you’ve articulated here. I got here by wondering what it would be like if the reso heads were the same thickness and similar mass as the batter, I tried it once and I’ve never went back.
    I like the added depth they give as well as not feeling the need to muffle with moongel or anything like that for general playing. I prefer wide open toms aesthetically. I typically play styles of music that warrant a sound like this (70’s funk, and more modern styles) which lends itself to a more controlled, thuddy, and deeper tone anyway.
    With the thicker resos, the high end frequencies that might be lost by doing this likely would’ve likely been taken out from EQ anyway to avoid bleed from the snare, if it wasn’t already by muffling to get the desired sound. In my experience I’ve also noticed less cross talk with a more clear separation between each of the drums and less sympathetic snare buzz being activated by the toms.
    Having said that, I’m also a generally a medium to hard hitter (coming from a marching background), but with the styles that I play; the sensitivity and lower end dynamic response loss I might experience I compensate with more velocity at lower dynamics to maintain clarity on the lower side.
    In addition, the shells that I use are on the thinner side of the spectrum,
    (Ludwig Classic Oak) 5 ply oak/maple shells which allows the shell to be activated more easily at lower dynamic levels; which would also be a factor to consider before doing this, as it relates to the sensitivity and dynamic response.
    Overall I’ve really loved this sound the past few years and I’m glad to see Sounds like a Drum giving it a shot and being able to articulate the experience extremely well. Thanks guys.

    I really appreciate the thoughtful content that you guys create. I’ve been experimenting with new head and tuning combos because of your videos and have found that coated G2’s on top and clear G2’s on the bottom did wonders for my old Pearl Export. Now, I’m off to experiment on my DW maple/mahogany. Cheers 👍

    I've been using 10 mil resonant heads for as long as I can remember. Usually Evans G1s, either clear or coated. I did try their Reso 7 one time (7 mil), but that was a bad choice for the low tunings I was going for. The idea of a clear G12 is intriguing and I'm glad you did a video on this concept. Thanks.

      Just switched my reso heads to EC2 Reso and Black Hydrolics for the batters. I have used that combo for 1 band practice session so far and I’m am very satisfied with what I’m hearing on playback as well as when we practicing. I have not had a chance to mic them up yet but that’s coming this weekend on a large outdoor stage.

    Massive thanks to you for your videos and work you put into them! They provoke thought and experimentation budget allowing. I had an older Yamaha kit that produced nice results using coated emperors for reso’s and black pinstripes for batters. When I purchased a new kit I switched to Evans and have tried two different combos both being very different in results. The clear G1 reso’s with coated G2 batters it nice but I need to use muffling which I’ve been trying avoid for my working / gig drumset. The send combo is a Black Hydrolic batter and EC2 Reso and I am very happy with his result so far. Im in a working band so I can test my results in various settings fortunately to see what really works for me. I believe I will switch out the G1 reso’s to a G12 in the future.

    Excellent video! I look forward to trying this out again properly. Years ago I remember putting thicker heads on as resos (I think they were even 2-ply remo pinstripes) as I was really looking for that deep low sound. They turned out a bit dead, but I was quite inexperienced (still inexperienced, just less so). I've been playing mostly jazz the last couple of years, so I have kept my heads rather thin and tight, but I miss these lows!

    Love the low phat sound. That's why I use Evans hydraulics for the batters but have never changed the resos. The kits only a year old and I've added a few toms to it. I think im going to try this.

    Super useful as always! I intuited this back in middle school when I a reso on my school's 16" Swingstar floor tom got punctured during a move. We bought a new batter head, and moved the existing (Pinstripe) batter to the bottom. I was able to tune the drum super low without any flapping. Ever since, I've used thicker reso heads on my floor toms whenever I want to get that phat, Benny Greb kind of tone.

    • @chrislopez1391
      @chrislopez1391 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i totally agree with this. i use a clear pinstripe on bottom and coated pinstripe on top of my 16" floor tom and it's perfect for low tension tunings. can't get my other 16" tom to sounds like this with thinner heads.

    I have a particularly troublesome-to-tune Pearl ELX 14" x 12" suspended tom which i had nightmares trying to get to sing just right without an awful lot of overtones. I went through a lot of different resonant heads and finally i tried something a little different and used a 14" Evans EC2 Coated batter head as a resonant. This is one of the older models of EC2 drumhead where the perimeter had two metal strips rather than the new ink ones. Sounds so deep and powerful now, and has JUST the right amount of resonance.

    First of all, I love this channel. I learn so much. I love big fat low sounds in toms, but even more on snare drums these days. I’ve tried lots of thicker batter heads (diff models and brands/styles) and I see decent results. Muffling works decent as well, but sometimes I feel like I’d like more sustain on low fat snares. I noticed that some drum head companies offer a thicker snare side head. Would your concepts in this video apply if I tried a thicker snare side head? Thanks again!!

    I use coated G2s as batters and coated G14s as resos. I chose these, initially, because I wanted resonance but with a shorter note--because I play in a room with a low and angled ceiling, which creates some weirdness with sustain and echoe-y overtones (just because of the room). So I switched to those heads to see what would happen and found I had to tune them quite a bit lower. The floor toms sound great. My 12" tom sounds decent, and my 10" sounds a little dead. (I'll probably change the 10" to a coated G1 and the 12" to a coated G12 when I get around to it.) But that's all right. I can practice without hearing protection as long as I'm not really smacking them, which is what I was going for. Plus, I've found that I enjoy low tuning more than I thought I would. Great video!

    I previously tried Coated G12's as a reso head under Clear EC2 batters.

    Remember back in season 1 when I suggested using EC2's has batter and reso heads and you guys kind of gave it a funny look and thought is was not necessary.. I'm really glad you guys finally caught up. Took 4 seasons but you made it!! Welcome to the low end side of drumming tuning!
    By the way you guys should really try out of the box heads for reso's on the bass drum. For example I use a aquarian sk2 as batter but then I use a aquarian articulater for the reso, which is essentially a marching bass drum head, but the low end punch that combo creates is amazing. I know you guys are Evans guys so I don't know what Evans heads would be comparable to match that combo. But there's some food for thought for you guys

    Great vid! I switched out Ambassadors to Emperor years ago. Now they have color tone, which is an emperor as well. Work perfectly for what I need. Evans Hydraulic for batter heads. You would think the combo would sound muddy or boxy, but actually just cuts all the unwanted wonkiness you get w/ standard reso Ambassadors

    Reminds me of your demo using different batter head thicknesses (something I want to try). I wonder how mixing resos on a kit would sound. The guitar analogy makes sense. Unfortunately, it gets expensive to experiment.

    • @johncollins5552
      @johncollins5552 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Going by the guitar analogy you can see that you can stay with thin or single ply heads for a small Tom but go for heavier 2 Plies for floor tom etc. You don't have to change the whole kit.
      I have always failed to get a great floor tom sound without extra damping so I just use a batter head like a pinstripe or coated emperor but I love the coated CS on the snare and the small Tom.

    Thank you for your videos...I've learned a lot through the years from you guys. One thing that I would love to see you do in some of these is have direct A-B comparisons. For example if you were to play the same tom groove back to back with the thin resos and immediately show the same groove with the thicker ones without talking between. I think that would really help me to hear the differences immediately. Anyway, just a thought. Thanks, guys!

    I asked Curt Bisquera his head set up and he said he runs emperor stop and bottom. That was the first time I was introduced to the concept of anything other than an ambassador, or the like on the reso side and I thought, "well hell, if Kirkee B is using them it can't suck!"

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just keep in mind all of the other factors that make this viable: drum size, tuning range, how hard he's hitting, and the spaces he's playing in. We always need to be mindful of the other factors when it comes to the "if it's good enough for _________ then it's good enough for me," approach.

    A lot of effort goes into shooting these would love to see the examples where we could quickly and easily a/b. Please work on your editorial for back to back examples - here you are talking about using alternative heads and then you play out on G1s. You also play them very differently or start on the ride which makes us switch context. It would be great to hear with the same groove cut together with clear labeling. Otherwise enjoy the videos very much, you guys really are one of the best resources on youtube!

    I've had the same reso's for "a while" now. Clear G1's on my 10" and 12", Evans Resonant on my 14" and 16". All are "hanging" tom's. I've tested different batter heads though. Clear G1's on the smaller and thicker pre-muffled heads on the bigger, but I can't remember the model. The idea was to get a greater spread tonally between the tom's, I usually tune them about a fourth apart.
    Right now my batters are coated, G1, G12, G12 and G14. It works :) but I'm gonna test the thicker reso next time, the hanging big ones ring forever sometimes.

    Compare this to your video on clear vs coated reso heads where as far as I remember you said there was not much difference. I wonder how much mass there is between clear and coated heads. When I want to go super low on my resos I just use a strip or two of duckt tape and put it on the center of the reso head. This gives enough mass to get way low without losing tone.

    This is a perfect example of the difference between resonance and sustain!! They both have nearly the same resonance but but G1's will ring longer since there is less mass to move.

    Great video. I have a Catalina Jazz that I like to tune low; the floor tom is around the same pitch as the kit in the video (C) and the rack is a 5th above at a G. UV1 batters with reso7s. When I had a bigger kit (14" and 16" toms) and tuned higher, I liked a tighter reso, but for these 12" and 14" toms I find both heads at the same pitch (E for the 12", A for the 14") makes it easier to get a consistently nice low tuning. However, I do find that when they get played hard and fast, the pitch can come up a fair bit, sometimes as high as a 3rd above the pitch I'd get if I just played the drum quietly. Definitely tempted to try some G14 resos to see if it mitigates this issue. Also wondering how the 18" kick would sound with a thicker reso now! That's also tuned real low, an octave below the floor tom, but in some rooms it needs some EQ to help with low end.

    Great video! I’m currently using an Aquarian Super 2 coated on my 12” rack reso, love it gets real low. I’d be curious to see what you guys think about the Super 2 heads, pretty much the same mass as the g12 but split into two plies 🤔 maybe a comparison vid haha

      They did a video awhile back with the Attack Thin Skin 2, which is 7+5 mil like the Super 2's. Granted, those were being used as batters, not resos, but I remember everyone liking them.

      Also, anecdotally, I tried using a Super 2 clesr as the reso on my 16" B/B floor tom a while ago, with Response 2 coated on top. I couldn't ever get it to sound right, always resonated weirdly. I switched to a Studio X clear for the bottom head (didn't even touch the batter) and that did wonders! It's my go-to floor tom reso head now.

    I want to try this on my 16" floor tom. I don't tune super low, more like low medium to medium. And I had to crank the reso much higher to stop the weird flappiness. I'm a pretty heavy hitter so still, there's some weirdness. And the sustain is almost too much sometimes. I've got it dialed in pretty good but still. You think the g12 will cut some sustain and give a better gut punch thud?

    • @johncollins5552
      @johncollins5552 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think with 16 floor tom you need more than the 6 tuning lugs per head many have. Sonor will have 8 or sometimes 10 making more even tuning and stopping flapiness.

    Thanks for another enthralling informative Video. I have PDP Concept Maple Kit with 8", 10" & 12 " Rack Toms ; 14" & 16" Floor Toms. I switched the Batter Heads to Evans G2s Coated (per the recommendation of the Drum Store), keeping the Stock Remo clear Reso Heads. I look to achieve a Dooo, Dooo sound from the Toms (formerly described by Jared on Drumeo). I am almost there, experimenting with Tuning Tweaks seen here. I never touched the Reso Heads, but after listening to this, I may try G12s on the Reso heads. FTR, I am only a Hobbyist Player, 70 YO, retired, and play for personal Pleasure. Perhaps you have a tip for me to better tune the 8" rack Tom? Very hard to find that "sweet" spot on that drum. I play to Rock Music, My Music.

      This drum sings and seems to resonate best at a 3rd octave E . I'm retired and have time to experiment.

    It was on this channel that I learned about using 2-ply resos with my 2-ply batters and I've (happily) incorporated that, mainly because of the "same surface tension" mantra we've all heard about when it comes to tuning toms... i.e., to achieve a pure tone, the TENSION should be the same on the tops and bottoms, and with mismatched thicknesses at the same pitch, you'll have different tensions-does that cause the decay on the G1's? Here, you're using G12 (coated) batters and testing the G12 resos, so I'm thinking you have the same thickness on top and bottom. Why then advise about adding tension to the G12 reso? If you tuned to the same pitch, you're likely at the same tension, right? In any case, listening to the outcome on this video once again provides an interesting alternative to those "tried and true" tuning options, and I appreciate that you folks take the time and have the passion to do it-I've learned a lot and saved tons of time and money and your videos are pro level - thanks!

    Question for everyone and anyone please. I have two birch floor toms, 16 and 18 inch, that tend to sound like timpani. They have coated ambassadors on both batter and reso side. Would trading these out for Emporers help give it more punch or even just Emporer on one side? Black dot? Other suggestions?

    • @inmemoryofin
      @inmemoryofin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Emperors will be a little more controlled but it sounds more like adjusting your tuning would get you there more directly. Coated Ambassadors can definitely deliver a fat punchy sound if you tune them to deliver that. I have Ambassador Vintage batters on my snare and toms (5x14 supraphonic snare with a birch Tama kit) with clear Ambassador reso's. No problem getting fat and punchy tones without muffling. 80% of the sound is in the tuning. For an example check out Rob Brown's videos on tuning.

    does anyone know if thinner batters, such as G1s, and Strata 1000s would work well with thicker resos? I might give it a try sometime, although I don't really want to spend money on a head or two I might not use. On one hand, I think maybe it could allow one to tune the reso much lower, and not get wobbly flappy sounds at low tunings, but on the other hand, maybe because of it having more mass than the batter, it might not activate, or might choke out the sound.

  • @gogogadgetspoon

    I've never changed the stock resos on my Export or Midtown kits 😅 So Remo ambassador presumably. The Export resos are fifteen years old, which is somewhat embarrassing. I love low tunings though so I think I'll change them all out for thicker heads now!

    I ended up putting 2-ply resos (Evans Genera) on my floor toms. I had the 1-ply Genera (I think it was the Glass?) on there and I just found that my 14" needed a little more "oomph." Sure enough that did the trick.

      Very nice! Just a heads up- the Genera Reso is a 1-ply 10mil head similar to the G1 but with different film being used. Did you mean the G2 as a reso? Sounds like you may have had the Genera Resos on there originally. What are you using for batter heads?

      @@SoundsLikeADrum Yeah, I had some of my details mixed up (I haven't sat down at my kit in a few months and it's been even longer since I looked at my resos). I had Generas on them and I still do on the rack toms, but the floors are G12. Batters I was using coated G2 but I've had mesh heads (and L80s) since my daughter was born for obvious practical reasons.

    I love Bill Bruford's snare sound on Yes - Roundabout, nice and deep. I just scored a 1968 Ludwig Supraphonic, same as his, mine is 6.5 deep. It came with usual thin reso head, which I lowered to finger tight - and wham - got that deep sound. What reso can you recommend for snare to go deeper?

      Much more open and resonant due to a singular piece of material. The G2 can sound great as a reso though, particularly when you've got another two-ply head on top.

    So at one point, you said you can use the same batter head. Generally, doesn't it work better for the reso to be no thicker than the batter? If you're used to 10 mil on both, and you go up to 12 on the reso, don't you also need to go up to 12 on the batter?

    • @SoundsLikeADrum

    uh. thicker heads are NOT lower in tone, they just have less overtones and are more muffled. Being more stiff, they actually do not tune as low as thinner heads. If you wonder if that is true, knock a thin and a thick piece of wood, e.g. on a cajon, and guess which sounds brighter, and which lower.
    So using thicker heads means getting a smaller tuning range - they start higher. Some of the observations seem to be assumptions, not really observations, because most drummers assume thicker heads to be lower. I have no idea why this is - sure it has less overtones, but so does a thin head with moon gel.
    Anyhow, this does not mean thicker heads do not sound great, they can be a good choice for your sound. Just pointing out that the concept of thick heads being lower in tune does not root in reality.

    • @adorodrums
      @adorodrums 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh when it comes to extra mass - and getting the pitch down - this works with dots. Those actually make the pitch lower.

    Enjoy the lessons and instructions from the audio only. The set has little personality outside of the Edison bulb and lamp. The similarity of color between the drums, light, cymbals, and acoustic treatments paired with a neutral pallet wardrobe does not match the intensity and passion heard in his voice. I am drawn in when I listen but not when I watch. Content is great.
