First base play has been awful this year, and is most of the reason why our projected top 2 defense isn’t even close to that right now. Everyone they stick at first base has rarely bailed out the fielders, even from bounces that should be routine from a big league first baseman. I imagine belly will get a lot of time over there now if PCA continues to hit even decent. He’s played gold glove level defense over there in his career, so that should help quite a bit.

The pitcher is supposed to take charge and yell out "catcher" or "first base" to tell both players who should handle that ball and who should back off. (The pitcher can can also yell out the position number, which in this case would have meant 2 for catcher or 3 for first baseman.) Shota wasn't able to do that since he's just starting to learn English. Aside from that, you're overreacting to a play that turned out to have no effect on the score, as Shota wound up striking out Machado and Bogaerts to get out of the inning. If you have to call out a player today, look no further than PCA, whose failure to lay down a bunt and advance Amaya to second base in the 5th inning cost the Cubs a run on Nico Hoerner's single.
