Are you an alumni of the aluminum v aluminium argument? I am apathetic on that account, and are aloof. OK...that is enough of that...but it a-literal-ively felt good to type it. LOL
The establishment of the Vichy regime (officially the French State) and the death of the 3rd Republic (1870-1940) is a very complicated topic. Basically everybody wanted to be done with the latter because of how unstable it was, and the MPs trusted Pétain. Everybody knew he was right-wing, but they thought he was still a republican (small r). The idea was really that he’d assumed temporary extraordinary powers then hand them back. The vote was influenced by the circumstances, Laval (career politician with an oily reputation) making contradictory promises to every political group, and all MPs hearing what they wanted to hear in Pétain’s words. Unfortunately there’s a bad tendancy in France to hand power to a « providential man », often from the military, during crisis. It started with Napoleon, and De Gaulle was arguably part of the trend, though he didn’t create an authoritarian regime.
8:33 24 kilometers, pretty sure that's over the horizon. 10:30 Ever heard of the song 'The Room Where it Happens'. Its entirely unconnected to this situation but the sentiment is pretty much the same. A lot of compromises were made behind the scenes to make this law pass. 13:18 Whoever came up with the new French motto must be anti-B i t c h y France. Because that's a hilarious coincidence.
